Wow. I saw this band back in in 1978 in a shitty little club in Norwich (now a branch of MacDonalds). Had the single but haven't listened to it for 40 years or so. Blew me away! This so good. That's what 77 was all about!
Fantastic song which brings back many memories. I went to see them at a small venue when this song first came out. My mate and I were try to learn to play guitar so just before they started playing this song we asked the guitarist what chords he was playing . He told us and then whilst playing the song, he called out the chords to us so we could see exactly what he was doing. I was about 14 at the time and it made a huge impression on me. Great song, great band.
I am 14 years old and one of the founding members is one of my mothers close friends. hes known me since my birth and i just found out he was a musician!
You had yellow hair, did you see me? I loved this song, this punk track way back in the day....& many more of vintage punk ilk at the time. Just now in 2023, listening to this....in my early 60's - I only now realise how much I UNDER rated it as a song, way back then! Fecking Brilliant!
When I was about 14/15 we played this in my living room with our band while my parents were away (about 1978/9) we lived on a council estate and had complaints from about 1/4 a mile down the road because of the noise. Happy days :-)
Heard this for the first time yesterday watching Adam Curtis' Can't Get You Out Of My Head. As a long time admirer of most things punk and post-punk I can't believe I've let this gem pass me by until now!
Beth Crossley ......I'm 62 and still love this track. "Fast Product - The First Year Plan is imho the greatest compilation album ever. Still proud to have my original copy.
@@davidharrison9324howsabout this... I played this in my first band, Matra Fact. I live in Canberra, Australia. We heard it on a Rough Trade compilation, Wanna Buy A Bridge (?) A few years later, 2 members of my best band, Black Dogs (who played an even better version of this song), & I played Armalite Rifle as part of a play, American Days. The British TV version of the play starred Toyah Wicox. The woman who played Toyah's part in Canberra, 1989ish, is the woman I always thought of when I sang The Mekons' line: "You had yellow hair- did you see me?" Anyhoo, how fucking good were Gang Of Four? I still listen to them. Leeds, eh? Who knew?
John Peel played this a lot in the late 70's. The drums building to a crescendo at the start just builds the excitement. Big John Langford was the powerful drummer. Heady days. There are quite a few gems like this in the punk era. Great guitar riff.
A superb band that I wouldn't have been aware of if it wasn't for John Peel. I was born in 1980 and my parents loved there Punk Rock bands so it rubbed off on me from an early age.
Bailed up Phil Jupitus years ago at a Gang of Four gig when he had a show on 6 music and said to him play this tomorrow morning. Fair play to him, he did!
I have seen the Mekons at least 30 x live and they NEVER dissapoint! Brilliant music as always and f****** hilarious people too! Sympathy for the Mekons!
Still one of the greatest singles ever released!! Sad that this version was never put out in the states......I remember paying import prices for this back in '79......
This takes me back! I heard it while watching Adam Curtis' excellent docu-series, "Can't get you out of my head" and I knew the tune instantly but it was such a while back I couldn't recall the name but was determined not to look it up and then once the programme finished it came to me, as did the single which was a treasured part of my collection. Great, great record and firm supporters of RaR (Rock against Racism) of which I was an active member. The Mekons had to brave one of the ugliest and most violent branches of the NF(National Front) the then erstwhile, infamous neo-fascist shitheads of the day who tried to attack and wreak their gigs but they held firm. They did us proud and my generation owes a lot to these pioneers and others (Gang of Four, The Raincoats, The Slits, The Pop Group to name a few) of real muzak instead of the mainstream pap that we were subjected to by Tony Blackburn, Noel Edmonds et al.
Not looking things up is the best way to keep that can of soup in your head fresh. That is what I do anyway. Are you here to take me home? I am home? Are you my son? :)
haha, yes dude! that video used to get me and my friends pumped up before a skate sesh! SO many good songs. Chris cole was S.O.Y back then for the tre flip at the end of the video. Good shit
i've been spending all day searching for one song after another and seeing all the other adam curtis fans have done the same thing. and I'm only on episode 2 at the minute!
When I was waiting in the bar, where were you? When I was buying you a drink, where were you? When I was crying home in bed, where were you? When I watched you from a distance, did you see me? You were standing in a queue, did you see me? You had yellow hair, did you see me? I want to talk to you all night, do you like me? I want to find out about your life, do you like me? Could you ever be my wife, do you like me? When I was waiting in the bar, where were you? When I was buying you a drink, where were you? When I was crying home in bed, where were you? When I watched you from a distance, did you see me? When I was standing the queue, did you see me? You had yellow hair, did you see me? I want to talk to you all night, do you like me? I ended up meeting Jon Langford a couple of times over a school trip to the Country Music Hall of Fame recently. He has some cool art, and is hella funny to listen to.
Ace tune. Whenever I hear the start of this and that great build-up - it reminds me of charlatans and sproston green , especially when they do it live. Great post & thanks.
adam curtis brought me here, god bless
franchise tag on me bron bron
Ha! Me too.
Same. Love it. I instantly paused the doc and googled the lyrics. Might have to watch "A Band Called Death" tomorrow. Cheers yall
Me too in a way, but I did a search history on here and realized I thumbs upped this in 2019. But I know it played somewhere more recently.
Check out boredoms super roots 7 that took big inspiration from this as well

Wow, what a story! A great guy and a great musician!
that is awesome
This is one of the best comments on CZcams, if not the whole internet. Obscure, uplifting, nostalgic and very personal but completely relatable.
I am 14 years old and one of the founding members is one of my mothers close friends. hes known me since my birth and i just found out he was a musician!
Beautiful memory
Really the classic British sound of the early punk scene. I love the angst.
Absolute punk rock perfection. It simply doesn't get any better than this.
You had yellow hair, did you see me?

What is the remainder of that verse?

Everyone who lives near me loves this song. Well, I hope they do.
Heard this for the first time yesterday watching Adam Curtis' Can't Get You Out Of My Head. As a long time admirer of most things punk and post-punk I can't believe I've let this gem pass me by until now!
Me too! I shazam'd it and ran to the computer to listen to it :D How did I miss this??!?
Greatest track of all time. Means so much to me. I'm 53 now. Where's it all gone. Music is timeless.
Beth Crossley ......I'm 62 and still love this track. "Fast Product - The First Year Plan is imho the greatest compilation album ever. Still proud to have my original copy.

You're 60 now dude!
Two minutes and forty eight seconds of pure post-punk perfection.

British "punk" scene never ceases to amaze me.

What a rotter...
Unpretentious, classic, brilliant and timeless...
I was just recently exposed to The Mekons. Outstanding band. I can’t stop listening.
A superb band that I wouldn't have been aware of if it wasn't for John Peel. I was born in 1980 and my parents loved there Punk Rock bands so it rubbed off on me from an early age.
I listened this song cause i've been watched one day 😢
Bailed up Phil Jupitus years ago at a Gang of Four gig when he had a show on 6 music and said to him play this tomorrow morning. Fair play to him, he did!
This should be compulsory listening for every teenager who says they want to be in a band.
And every teenager who doesn't !
This comment is more profound than most people will ever imagine.
true punk freshness was THIS.
The most energetic and powerful introduction of all time
That would actually be the guitar intro to 'Alternative Ulster' by SLF..!! 😬
Any Adam Curtis fans here?
hell yes!
I remember this with such fondness. Life was so good then.
reminds me of an x girl friend
Yeah no internet, no streaming or downloading, no youtube and if you lived in UK only 4 channels of shite TV to choose from

Baricevic Russell ....hey mate! You are correct of course!
Any fans of this song should look up Super Roots 7 by Boredoms, it's a 20 minute re imagining of this song that's absolutely awesome.

Boredoms!!! Super Are You is one of my favorite songs of all time. Unfortunately I missed the show in New Haven back in 2000.

Adam Curtis brought me here too. God bless him twice!
Once upon a time, Jonboy Langford and Miss Sally Timms went to The America and reinvented Country Music for their huddled masses. . .

Rock in Mekons...

A truly fantastic song, thanks for this
The first minute of this song sounds like the start of a revolution
As intense now as it was when I first heard it all those years ago.
The soundtrack to a revolution.
