  • The Canon EOS R is an incredible camera for recording video, so I wanted to share the settings I use for my videos. This isn’t a definitive “best settings ever” guide, it’s just an overview of what works for me.

  • @ItsBourbonNight
    @ItsBourbonNight Před 4 lety +2

    Question for ya, are you sure about the 1/100th shutter speed when you shoot at 60fps? I would think it would be 1/120th because it's double your 60fps. Just like when we shoot 1/50th on a DSLR for 24fps because DSRLs don't have a 1/48th setting (48 being double 24) so the 1/50th setting is the closest we have to 1/48th. Thanks, great video!

Shot video with it for the first time today in London and boy... Those codecs are beefy and beautiful out of camera! I have a friend that bought a new camera to video his daughters wedding. He took it out of the box 20 minutes before the wedding.
    You probably figured out he had nothing except a few pics he took with his phone.
    He’s a slow learner, he put it back in the box and waited until his sons graduation to take it out again. This time he gave himself 40 minutes to try and figure out the settings.
    It might have worked if the battery didn’t die. 😂😂

    • @tombuck

      Hey Patrick!! I would definitely recommend the R. Canon is announcing the R5 and R6 next month, and while both of them will be more expensive than the R, there's always the chance their release could lower the R's price (although that's pure speculation, and I don't know if it's worth actually waiting for).

    • @tombuck
      @tombuck  Před 3 lety +1

      I can definitely help. Recording at 60fps won't automatically playback in slomo. You'll need to use your editing software to slow the footage down somewhere between 50-60%. If you're using Final Cut, just click on the clip in the timeline, press shift+n, then you'll see a green bar on top of the clip that you can drag to adjust the timing to be exactly what you want.

    Hi Tom and thank you for this great video. There is one problem I´m having and that is that when I use the Manual video Mode and I press the Q button on the screen in Video mode the picture style can't be seen as an option. The strange thing is that it seems not to work in Manual mode but it does in others such as Program AE, Shutter priority and so on. Do you have any Idee why the Picture style is not available/visible in the M Mode? It´s also not visible when I go into the MENU.

    11:49 I believe that is where you can actually Format the Card. Doing so will erase everything on the card. In the past you would buy a SD card and to use it in your camera you would have to format the card to your camera's file format. It is still the easiest way to erase a SD card. (SD cards are often FAT32).

    • @tombuck
      @tombuck  Před rokem +1

      Unfortunately the 30 minute limit is baked in to the camera. The only real way around it is to use an external recorder of some kind. The Atomos Ninja is a super popular choice, but also very expensive. Another option is to use something like the Elgato CamLink to run the camera into your computer and then you can use an app like Ecamm or OBS to record. Just keep the camera powered on in standby mode and the only limit will be how much hard drive space you have. 👍

    • @tombuck
      @tombuck  Před 2 lety +1

      Hey Bruno! Do you have IS turned on with your lens? If not, are you shooting in 4K? The R can be susceptible to some pretty intense rolling shutter in 4K and that might be what you're seeing.

      They both seem like outstanding cameras. I’m very interested in the R5, but nervous about the price. I don’t think it’s in my budget, but if it were, I’d love to have an R5 and my R as a power duo. I used to not care about 4K very much, but now that it’s 2020, having full frame 4K sounds terrific. The only downside is that the new memory cards for the R5 are really expensive.

      My shutter stays at either 1/50 (24fps) or 1/60 (30fps) during streams, and I do like to keep my aperture wide open, but that's 100% just a personal style preference.

    • @MikeMena
      @MikeMena Před 4 lety +1

      @@tombuck I WAS SHOCKED. I suppose it makes sense if you are really good at lighting and have less colorful gradient backgrounds. To be clear Jesse Driftwood only uses IPB during talking segments and walk around vlogs because he says "no one can tell the difference." And then he laughed LOL. But, yea, in last Potato jet episode where he is talking about his new studio he just mentions it in passing that he uses IPB... When you think about it, before his eos r he was just using the 80D for studio and m50 for vlog. So the IPB of eosr is still an upgrade. I still record in ALL-I and CLOG for my studio, BUT I wonder if this is purely insecurity?? Like, I'm so worried that I don't understand lighting enough to trust myself? I'm gonna try IPB someday, but, I do worry about upscaling it. But, Potato and Jesse know what they are doing... so maybe they are right??

    • @tombuck
      @tombuck  Před 4 lety

      Those guys definitely know what they’re doing, but I really like ALL-I. I use IPB on my 6D since that’s all it has, and while the footage does look good, it doesn’t have the same clarity as the R. There are a lot of different things that could cause that, but I feel like using the best option available is a smart thing to do. 👍

      An Instagram Reel is 1080X1920, so you can create a project with that size in any editing software and if you record with the camera vertically, the footage should fit fine after you rotate it. Beyond that, these same settings should work great 👍
