Woodturning - The Untold Story of Cedar
Vložit
- čas přidán 7. 09. 2024
- For this week’s project I recently picked up this large piece of cedar. There were some bark inclusions in the log which forced me to cut this little section out. I’ll turn a couple of smaller bowls from it.
Harry apparently had a traumatic event in his past involving cedar wood. Tune in to hear his story.
I’ll be giving one of these pieces to the gentlemen who I got the wood from. It’s finished with Mahoney’s Walnut Oil.
Thank you all for watching! I’ve got some other exiting news which I’ve yet to announce in a video but I’ve created a website. Please go and check it out if you’re interested in purchasing any turnings which I’ve created!

hello friends greetings healthy and successful always. thank you for sharing knowledge and always faithfully watching your latest things @
Great piece, Robert! I love the grain of cedar and it finishes so beautifully.
Thanks Billy! Now I just have to figure out what to do with the other 3/4 of the log I started with!
Very good Robert Enjoyed the video and the story 😂😂
turned out beautiful
Hello Glenn, how are you doing today, hope you’re fine and safe from the Virus??
Very beautiful piece I might just try a piece ✌️💪💪
Great piece as always Robert. Love the shape and brilliantly turned.👍👍
Thank you so much 😀
Nice piece Hodge! nothing like a story along with the turning!
Beautiful bowl Robert, pity we can't get Cedar here though. Keep safe
Great project, Hodge. Cedar sure smells good, and turns easily! Love the live edge!
Thanks DD! Luckily Harry has gotten over his fear of the smell now!
Great work Hodge. The wood makes for a beautiful bowl.
Very good looking cedar bowl. You did a great job with it. Thanks for sharing it.
well done mate
Very nice I love turning cedar it's one of my favorites and you sir did an excellent job 👏
The distinct sap wood is a great highlight of the bowl. Well crafted.
I'm with Blair I love cedar the look and smell and you can turn the most beautiful pieces out of it stay safe👍👍👍👍
A friend gave me some cedar about six years ago. I turned the last of it this winter. Nice wood to work with and the shop smelled great!
Harry! Look out!
Great piece Robert. Love your stuff!
Such a harrowing tale. Poor Harry. Beavers should be admired and venerated, not shut away where nobody can see them. If I were into social media, I'd probably add something like #FreeTheBeaver (nice bowl, Robert)
Nice work Robert...WATCH YOUR BACK HARRY!!!
It’s a beautiful vade
Really like the shape of this bowl and the live edge. Had to back up to see that mutt.
Great project! I always love hearing the adventures of your beaver!
I love turning cedarwood
Very beautiful and a great job turning it!!
Enjoyed your video and I gave it a Thumbs Up as a support
I'm with Harry, had one explode on me last week. When Harry called you an A-Hole, I cracked up. Well done fella's!
Beautiful Piece, thanks for sharing. I have some cedar logs waiting on me to do some work on them. Full View and Like 👍
I like cedar, good smell,😀😀😀
Yes definitely made my shop smell nice for a few days!
Beautiful cedar bowl Robert.
Great looking piece Robert 👍
Awesome bowl Hodge!
Robert, very nice bowl mate well done
Alan
Awesome as usual!!
Nice bowl . I always have to wear power respirator for turning cedar , wear gloves when applying finishes , and lay a wooden tray or sheet of newspaper on bed when applying finishes . Have you ever used a wedge and sledge to split out turning blanks ?
Very nice 👍. Cedar is one of my favorite woods to turn. Great job. Do you do decal stickers swop. Love to add yours to my board.
Thanks Robert! It sure makes your shop smell good! I do sticker swaps. If you want to exchange addresses, you can message me on Instagram or Facebook.

Been a long time since I’ve had a nice bit of cedar with no cracks or rot/bug holes. These two little bowls are lovely. Makes me want to go cut down my neighbors’ tree.
Nice bowl, Robert. It's strange how the grain makes the bowl look oblong. We always knew Harry needed counselling, now we know one of the reasons. But only one. Take care.
Bill
Harry should be wearing a mask! Cedar isn't good for the lungs!
Beautiful bowl Robert!
Glad Harry was able to face his cedar fears, after such a traumatic experience!
Like the live edge. When you first chucked up the block is that risky❓should you always wear a mask when turning cedar❓
Thanks Jim, I usually start most of my turnings between centers and have never had one come off. This cedar was pretty wet so there wasn't much dust. Some people may have allergies to cedar so a mask could be a good idea.
I am soooo worried about Harry's fears...
I love the smell and the look of cedar. However, some of the pieces I have worked with have a tendency to blow up.
With cedar being so soft I could see that being a common occurrence if you get a catch!
I would like to touch this bowl, and study it well! I tend to have a bit of trouble hollowing deeper bowls. What tool did you use?
For the most part I used a 5/8in bowl gouge and when I got to the bottom I used a 3/4in bottom bowl gouge. Once you get the hang of the bottom bowl gouge it works great!
Did you turn this wet or dry? If wet, did you have issues with cracking?
Red cedar turns easily, leaves a remarkable finish and is beautiful. But, in my limited experience, it fades to brown. Have you found a way to keep the color from fading?
What finish did you use
I used Mahoneys Walnut oil

So Harry has flashbacks like a Nam veteren?
First time viewer and it threw me off as to why you flip the bowl around so many times. Seems you're adding a bunch of steps and creating two tenons when really you only need one. When I make a bowl I only flip it twice and done. I mount it either between centers, worm screw or faceplate, make the tenon or mortise and carve the outside. Flip it and mount in chuck and carve out the inside then flip and get rid of tenon. All sanding and finish is done before flipping.
Welcome and thanks for watching! I only started doing this two tenon/mortise technique a few months ago after taking a class with Stuart Batty. The reason for doing the first tenon or mortise on what will be the top of the bowl is that it will then allow you full access to the bottom to do a pushcut from the bottom all the way to the rim. The tailstock would typically be in the way if you were between centers. You could use a faceplate but I feel that takes longer than just making a 2nd chucking point.
Thought Harry was going soft therefor a while 🥴
I like ceader bowels.
