Corrections: Vic is still in appeals in court as the case is still ongoing. With some conflicting/confusing info, I messed that up slightly. My bad. The Kaguya-sama edit was by Aniplex, not Funimation I failed to mention that Vic is confirmed to have had a promiscuous quality even when engaged, so there's plenty of criticism to levy at him for that reason. Part of the Interspecies Reviewer section was misinformed as apparently the anime added more risque scenes than the manga, though I still feel their continued grip on the license and so on is bad, there was a slightly more adequate reason for them dropping it One of the sources I used for researching the Vic situation also apparently has been known for excluding information, so I apologize if that seemed especially one-sided. Thanks for continued feedback!
You also forgot about the VA for Buu having what I can only assume to either be a mental breakdown or being as childish as his character when (during the vic situation) he diverted all criticism of his and Rager's actions by tweeting pics and gifs along with some phrases about apples in response to these people on twitter
@@sonic23233 Funnily enough, Sean Schemmel did just that at one point. He actually told Vic that he hated him...... because of how open he is about his religion. (I believe it had something to do with Sean and his father when he was a kid. Like his father was really strict about their religion.. or something. Honestly, I can't recall the specifics... I may be wrong about that last detail, so don't quote me on that.) But regardless, it's still pretty absurd to not like someone for a reason like that. Vic did nothing to him. I'd say that _does_ make Sean better than those other shitheads though... even if only _slightly._ Since at least he was up-front about not liking him, rather than being friendly toward him for over a decade before hurling all kinds of bullshit at him online.

What happened with Vic pissed me off but what drove me to cancel my subscription was how the voice actors like Monica and Jamie acted on twitter, not to mention the others. Instead of staying quiet and letting the courts handle things they turned it into a spectacle and helped further fuel the whole kickvic vs istandwithvic situation. Was just so unprofessional.

Another reason why Funimation is hated is because of Scott Freeman, who famously played Issei Hyoudou in High School DxD and England in Hetalia, and who was arrested back in 2014 for possession of CP. Funimation didn’t cut ties with him until AFTER he was convicted, meaning they kept working with him even AFTER he was arrested for being an evil sex monster!
The worst things 4Kids ever did were being painfully amateur and painfully cringe, but here’s the thing: unlike Funimation, 4Kids’ word had lasting positive effects on some of the source studios, YuGiOh and Ultimate Muscle (Kinnikuman Nisei) getting entire seasons funded off them alone. Funimation meanwhile have become one step away from con artist.

That’s the whole point of independent contractor VAs like Monica and the rest of the Fuckimation crew have: freedom. Dare I say, too much freedom. You see, VAs can’t be held responsible for their actions on social media and irl. That’s because they don’t have obligations/ ties to said company. In Japan, as an individual, your work ethics are taken seriously in the VA industry. You are signed to a talent voice agency contract which means they can fire you at any given moment if anything bad were to happen. Anything you do in the industry as well as outside that is seen as controversial or problematic are seen as a violation of said contract. Which means you can be held responsible for the actions you reap.
Colleen O’Shaughnessy should have voiced Bulma instead. She is one of the most loving and most talented VAs ever. You may recognize her as Tails from the Sonic franchise.

The story: Sony Pictures Television bought a 95% stake in Funimation for 143 million USD. This was then approved in August 22nd 2017. On August 7th 2018, AT&T fully acquired Otter Media (Crunchyroll owner) this would then end Funimation and Crunchyroll’s partnership being announced on October 18th 2018; then on November 9th 2018 the contents with the merge were removed; thus creating a new let’s say… dubbing vs subbing war. About 2 and a half years pass by, 2021 comes around and on the 9th August 2021, Sony Pictures Entertainment completed the acquisition of Crunchyroll from AT&T for 1.175 billion USD through the Funimation Global Group, LLC. AT&T (who owned Crunchyroll from August 7th 2018 - August 9th 2021) so 3 years later when Sony took over, they now owned both Funimation and Crunchyroll, Sony then layed off basically all the EX Crunchyroll employees, workers and then took Funimation’s studio (their own) to start working on Crunchyroll instead. They then merged content from Funimation to Crunchyroll which started from March 1st 2022. Crunchyroll then transitioned with Funimation into Crunchyroll LLC. (Previously Funimation Company) Digital Copy’s didn’t however transfer… now let’s say literally now nearly 2 years later. It’s not Crunchyroll that shutdown Funimation, Funimation Merged into Crunchyroll to shut down Funimation’s app and website. Crunchyroll is Funimation’s staff, dubbing team etc just under a mask from when Sony decided to move everything more than likely due to Crunchyroll’s better reputation. Funimation wasn’t as liked so it seemed profitable, Crunchyroll’s site also seems better ran and is far more available in other countries and more people use it. This making Crunchyroll the decision and to just get Funimation’s stuff to Crunchyroll as it was easier.
Yeah, I agree. Which is why I usually stick to the voice actors from California than the ones in Texas. I think they're just better, especially as people.

What I find infuriating about the Vic scandal is that funi is willing to throw him under the bus with just allegations and yet there are people like Daman Mills and Scott Freeman, with the former getting away with m**esting a boy under legal age, and spewing out racial slurs on FACEBOOK and with the latter being only booted due to acting late (better late than never, I guess) in his heinous activity, which is CP possession.
Nevermind, it seems Daman himself confirmed he got with that guy. The lie is that he molested him. Apparently it was a consensual relationship, and the guy only made up the molestation claim because he felt "abandoned". On one hand, Daman isn't a molester. But on the other, he still slept with a teenager in his 20's, so nobody here's innocent.

If Vic truly was a monster & didn't care that he was upsetting people, he wouldn't have apologized. He did apologize & I respect him for that. No one is 100% perfect, so we shouldn't expect him to be. He isn't homophobic for not wanting to see Anime characters that he has voiced be in Yaoi situations either. He sees it as disrespectful & disturbing. People that call Vic homophobic are just pissed off that he won't play their perverted games with him. He also is not a bible thumper because he made CDs of The Gospel of John. Vic created those as a way to give back to the fans, in an act of kindness, because he is a man of god. I'm atheist, but I took the CDs during a 2009 convention because they are a gift. He made them out of the goodness of his own heart & gave them away 100% free at his signing tables because he wants to spread the love of his religion. I shouldn't even have to explain this. It's reasonable thinking.
I'm not a homophobe, but it really bugs me when I see people being like "[character] is a GAY ICON" when the character is 100% straight and in-universe is uncomfortable with any same sex romantic interactions, so I can only imagine how much worse that would skeeve me if I was the creator of those characters or even if I was the voice actor. Like it's one thing when the character has no ostensible sexuality at all, but when the character is obviously straight, getting angry at people for saying "hey don't do yaoi of that character" is stupid. Especially when the character's a minor~

By supporting anyone who brings allegations with little to no proof and immediately firing them. Then Funimation is by effect, supporting the people who truly hate women. @@guacamollie2460 How the hell you get that conclusion? That's nothing at all what I said or what the topic was about. There is also a difference from comforting someone and needing to see proof. Nice try gaslighting.
The part about Vic was really bothersome. When you look at everything in context and get rid of the false "evidence" he seems like an extremely nice person. They need to start charging people criminally for making false allegations. It's sickening that people can try (often succeeding) to destroy someone's life but still get away scott free even if PROVED to be downright lying.

I find it ironic that Japanese children are exposed to so much more violence in their youth, but Japan has much lower rates of gun violence than here in the U.S.
I also wanna add Brittany Lauda, a Funimation VA who said people who make fandubs are not allowed to get professional work.... Yet she herself started off as a fandubber. She doesn't specify what kind of fandubber she's referring to, make it seem like she's condemning all kinds of fandubs instead of the bad ones that are obviously looking for profits.
This! I’m an online VA myself and a lot of Funi’s current pool did start out as fandubbers (I believe Justin Briner and Kira Buckland are two more examples? Don’t quote me on that). JS might not have known about it, but then again, VA business is hella tricky to research on.
Whether Vic is guilty or not is something I can't control. The fact that Funimation dropped him just on allegations while defending Chris and Sean for doing the same exact things they accused Vic of, and then take the word of a man who literally abused three of his now ex-wives...
They stood by Scott Freeman, a VA who has charged with CP. They stood by him until the very end. Yet against Vic, the minute a slight whiff of an issue, they drop him like a rock.
@@elliottgaal9774 Well, a lot of the people in positions of power at Funimation personally hated him anyways for one reason or another. Most common theory is that they hated him for being an outspoken Christian or because he didn't toe the political line. Which wouldn't be surprising if you asked me, but I can only think what I think, I cannnot know what I don't know. Either way, it's obvious that they were just looking for an excuse to give Vic the axe at this point, even if that excuse was made up from whole cloth. The false allegations against him were the most convenient excuse at their disposal, especially in the wake of the whole MeToo movement, which had already devolved into a modern-day equivalent of the Salem Witch Trials by that point. Thus, the moment the allegations arose, the people at Funimation jumped on the opportunity like hyenas on a carcass, claimed to investigate on the matter to give off a façade of integrity, made a very botched and biased investigation (if they investigated at all), and promptly gave Vic the axe a week later, with the public being none the wiser. It would've been the perfect crime, were it not for the substantial amount of evidence of corruption and other dishonest behavior (such as forging evidence) that was gathered in the following months as well as many of the people disavowing the so-called "evidence" provided by KickVic. At the end of the day, I think it's safe to say that the whole Vic fiasco essentially signed Funimation's death warrant, with their quasi-monopoly on the anime licensing industry and Dragon Ball sales barely keeping them alive. It's only a matter of time before their company goes out of business, as more and more people are becoming aware of their corruption and fleeing for greener pastures.
Sometimes Funimation got away with changing the script in Hetalia, but only when the add ins weren't handfisted and the VAs seemed to be having fun. Although, i often prefer the original for its canon and Japanese humor, while other times the English version adds jokes with a more American perspective. Hit and miss, but an east and west perspective together, if well executed, can really work. CAN work.
It's funny because Chris Sabat is very much a moderate-liberal, he's not a social justice warrior by any means. I never pegged him as the kind of guy that would destroy someones life just because of an allegation, so clearly he has a lot personal bias against Vic. And emphasis on the "clearly", because we know from testimony that Vic would be the subject of a lot of jealousy.
Literally all of her responses sound like somebody who doesn’t want to get paid, because a lot of the money earned is through Murch and physical copy purchasing. For most shows that don't go on for several seasons (or shows that aren't expected to anyways) the license for it is paid in a flat sum, not as a royalty. This means that all proceeds you pay goes only to them, not further supporting the author in any way. I met him back in Summer 2018, autograph and all, he’s a good man with a good heart. This was a couple of weeks after DBS Broly was fully revealed at SDCC
I met the guy in January of 2018 like a week before Broly was to be released. I was crazy excited because I loved Broly as a character and Vic was probably one of the nicest celebrities I've ever met. I'd been hoping for years that they'd bring Broly back and he'd get to voice him again, so when it happened I was so excited....Then all this shit happened and needless to say I was beyond pissed off.
God I fucking hate what happened to Vic. Man voiced my childhood more then Sean did, and to think that everyone he worked with and cared for stabbed him in the back makes me hate Funimation. Honestly, I'd rather take a censored 4kids dub of Demon Slayer then a Funimation one
I understand your hatred. I as well as many others like me decided to switch to subs for the disappointing moments. Although I watched both the dub and sub of Dbz, I dedicated myself to watching sub full time.
I hear you. Vic always seemed like such a cool dude, he never came off as being a creep or anything. But of course jealousy is powerful and some VAs apparently didn’t love that Vic was an outspoken Christian so they happily threw him to the wolves when they got their chance. It’s disgusting really. I personally think people at Funimation had a bone to pick with him for personal reasons and they came up with a story that they could garner support for (because in today’s world of MeToo, you can’t ever question a woman).

What I can say is that Funimation is clearly in the wrong for firing someone based on accusations when they have been working with abusers for literal DECADES and have done nothing. If what everyone says is true, I will gladly distance myself from your work and just continue to support other dubbing companies and manga publishers and pray that Funimation doesnt get their grubby little fingers on them. I met Vic at a signing at Sakura-con years ago. The dude was super chill, especially with the girls ahead of me who were practically begging him for a hug which he obliged in spite of the protests of the con security. He also didn't bat an eye when I asked him for a second autograph for my friend who was in the Karaoke competition at the time and was heartbroken to have missed him, especially when she'd hand made a puppet of one of his characters she hoped he'd sign(Some yellow cat thing? I don't recall exactly, I'm not familiar with whatever show it was) and not only did he give me the second signature on the puppet he had the most sincere "aww" look of flattery on his face as he did. He even chatted with me about getting into voice acting until I got shooed off for holding up the line. Stand up guy, IMO.
Was it Sakura-con 2017 by any chance? Because it was that convention that I first met Vic too and I agree, he was super friendly and everyone wanted to see him. Hard to believe this was just 4 years ago when everything was just fine...... I miss the good old days. I miss going to conventions too. Period.
I think the cat puppet may have been Beelzenef which was a cat puppet of Nekozawa a character from Ouran High School Host Club where Vic voiced Tamaki the leader of the host club.
Actually it's Funimation as a whole, they wanted to get rid of Vic cuz they found out his pay are a talented VA and it was the time they had to start selling there company to Sony. Someone leaked his pay to the company and everyone (chris, Sean, Monica and Jamie) tried to cut him off since the Broly movie release.
If they ever cons again. I think at a Monica Rial panel, I would ask her questions like "why does the funimation streaming layout suck so much?" Nothing directly to her, but just general gripes towards Funimation. And then explain at the end, I only watch anime in Japanese and ask her "who are you?"
Corrections: Vic is still in appeals in court as the case is still ongoing. With some conflicting/confusing info, I messed that up slightly. My bad.
The Kaguya-sama edit was by Aniplex, not Funimation
I failed to mention that Vic is confirmed to have had a promiscuous quality even when engaged, so there's plenty of criticism to levy at him for that reason.
Part of the Interspecies Reviewer section was misinformed as apparently the anime added more risque scenes than the manga, though I still feel their continued grip on the license and so on is bad, there was a slightly more adequate reason for them dropping it
One of the sources I used for researching the Vic situation also apparently has been known for excluding information, so I apologize if that seemed especially one-sided. Thanks for continued feedback!
If they didn't like Vic they could've just said it to him
You also forgot about the VA for Buu having what I can only assume to either be a mental breakdown or being as childish as his character when (during the vic situation) he diverted all criticism of his and Rager's actions by tweeting pics and gifs along with some phrases about apples in response to these people on twitter

Coming back here after they announced Funimation is shutting down for good
The story: Sony Pictures Television bought a 95% stake in Funimation for 143 million USD.
Lol

By supporting anyone who brings allegations with little to no proof and immediately firing them. Then Funimation is by effect, supporting the people who truly hate women.

I like how the guy that voices Mt. Satan ACTS like Mr. Satan in real life. True commitment to the role😌
Nah man, Mr. Satan is still likable, especially after the development he endured in the Buu Saga. His voice actor on the other hand is like if Cell Saga Mr. Satan never got any of that development and actually got worse with his arrogance and attitude.
@@keybladeoverlord He acts like Blackbeard
Nah, Mr Satan is likeable and appreciates his fans. The VA is not at all likeable or even that well known since I doubt most people even know his name. Myself included
Mr. Satan was one "Hell" of a name.
@@cerebralmalsey I read your name as "Abominable" Treason first. I hope your abdomen is ok.
28:50 wait. His name is SCOTT FREEMAN? And he got off ... scott free until 2015? oh my

Hispanic american: they just ruined the spanish dub from my favorite animes.
US people: get in the line...
Wait even the Spanish dub industry has their problems? Like what are the problems with the Spanish dubbing industry?
@@kittykittybangbang9367 asking a country with zero dub experience, or with just few good voice actors, to dub anime.... When everybody here knows the only country that has More quality and experience in dubbing Is México.
You'd be suprised how much latin American culture and morals conflicts with things shown in anime. I'm pretty sure the majority of anime that get spanish dubs get hit with crazy censorship. Same with Indonesia. If anything this comment is backwards.
@@motor4X4kombat Also not to mention the "rivalry" between Latin American dubs and Mainland Spanish dubs. Take the dubs vs subs arguments, pass them through an Xbox lobby toxicity pool and add 200+ years of cultural tensions and slurs and there you go. Both parties are so defensive of their dubs that it borders on fanaticism and it's honestly pretty pathetic because they always use the same arguments in an eternal hate cycle.
@@Empty_Carbon The hell have you been watching? the only changes they make is name changes in some anime and occasionally extra dialogue about religion.
EX: Super Campeones (Captain Tsubasa)
Tsubasa is referred to as Oliver and his parents mention La Virgen De Guadalupe.
The only anime that got hit was Pokemon, but that's because they were using 4Kids' script and footage rather than the original.
I study translation and number one rule each of my professors preach is "Your job is to translate what the original creator aspires to say in your language, not what you THINK they want to say or what YOU WANT it to sound like."
If I make a doodle in tribute to Vic, I'll preface it by saying this: "I've never met this person in my entire life, as I have only gone to a convention once and just basically watched his work on DVD and on TV. I cannot say that his apology is sincere, but I also cannot say that he was talking out of his ass. What I can say is that Funimation is clearly in the wrong for firing someone based on accusations when they have been working with abusers for literal DECADES and have done nothing. Vic, I am sorry this happened to you. If what everyone says is true, I will gladly distance myself from your work and just continue to support other dubbing companies and manga publishers and pray that Funimation doesnt get their grubby little fingers on them. If they're disproved in any way, shape or form, I will still watch it with a bit of self-awareness as to what had happened. Fare thee well, wherever you may go."
Imagine wanting to watch Subbed Anime as an escape from Dubbed Anime, because the Dub includes current events you want to escape from...
Current events propaganda has always been a feature in US productions.
Code Geass knocks on your door.
Pirated anime sites are the greatest thing to happen to anime
Duh, no kidding.
Ahoy~
-Houshou Marine
They're better, give us episodes in time and are even nicer then official websites like Netflix and crunchy roll. Netflix is somewhat nice but fucking whatever roll that I use now is absolute trash like my WiFi is shit one thing, the server I use doesn't show anime so I have to use VPN and more so I myself can't pay for crunchy roll so a online friend of mine decided to give me so we could catch up on AOT....... Like I wanna pay for Netflix and other sites too but I can't and Netflix for one person to pay is too expensive and I don't even have a job like?? Lmao really. It is a blessing to say the least.
i would go as far enough as to say that anime would not be a thing outside of japan at all today if not for the pirate sites.
as a frequent kissanime user, I completely agree
God bless 2019: the year Funimation and Rooster teeth studios had their dirty little secrets revealed...
What happened to Rooster Teeth?
@@skullsfire1155 it turned out, that the Accusations that got Vic fired alot of the staff (like the V.P) at Rooster teeth had actually done them... *There's a year's worth of content on Rooster teeth being completely hypocritical, see for yourself.*
@@skullsfire1155 to explain it a little better. RoosterTeeth, aka RT, quickly fired him and made a giant and pretty damning statement which basically implied he was 100% guilty of sexual assault and other stuff. A lot of their workers and voice actors like Shannon McCormick, voice of Ozpin and Washington, took to Twitter and were and still are very toxic about it.
But throughout 2019 & 2020 it was shown RT was a horrible company
1.) Their Vice President of Marketing beating his wife and going to jail, and they took a while to fire him with no official statement
2.) raising prices to a large degree and ignoring grandfathered prices
3.) They tried to act as if they were supporting BLM...and immediately were called out by a former black worker for being a toxic company that allowed racism
4.) They didn’t pay their animators overtime and essentially got volumes of RWBY made for free
5.) Ryan Haywood was caught having many sexual relations with fans, things they accused Vic of doing, and they made a vague statement and barely commented on it with mainly repeating “We’re sorry we didn’t know” all while they remove past vids with him in it, and many many heads of the company leave
Overall a very shady and shitty company that went from being respectable for being a small group of friends to a money hungry shell of its former self. Many people suspect that there is so many dark secrets hidden in roosterteeth that we have yet to find and that was the reason why they so harshly persecuted Vic, in order to draw attention away from themselves
The best year is gone and it sadly turned to the worst yeqr
Says a lot about our society.
I still stand by Yu Yu hakusho being the best English dub that has come out of Funimation.
*yes*
Thank you for making this video. I repeatedly keep watching this and it would be interesting for you to make a part 2 and discuss more about Funimation.
Period.
I met him and he was such an asshole. And it wasn't the one day, my friends met him on different days and they too said he was a jerk.
@SNEEDman [Formerly Chuck’s] dont respond to him hes a troll
@@RuthlessTides How was he a jerk, exactly? Do tell.
I think the cat puppet may have been Beelzenef which was a cat puppet of Nekozawa a character from Ouran High School Host Club where Vic voiced Tamaki the leader of the host club.
One reason: Monica Rial. She was the one behind what happened to Vic
And many others, too.
If they ever cons again. I think at a Monica Rial panel, I would ask her questions like "why does the funimation streaming layout suck so much?" Nothing directly to her, but just general gripes towards Funimation. And then explain at the end, I only watch anime in Japanese and ask her "who are you?"
MarzGurl was the mastermind behind the hashtag KickVic.
She was but it was HanLeia who confused Vic with Monica’s ex pedo boyfriend
