British singer and songwriter Craig David has spoken out about what it felt like "being bullied and ridiculed" by comedian Keith Lemon. During an appearance on BBC Breakfast this morning (Oct 4), the musician - who hails from Hampshire - talked about his new book 'What's Your Vibe' in which he opens up about the challenges he's faced over the years.
Speaking to hosts Sally Nugent and Jon Kay, Craig went into depth about the book and how people can expect it to include what life's been like for him in the spotlight. He said: "It was all about early days behind the scenes of some of those songs and how I may have been feeling behind the scenes, that there is human being and then there was the portraying' the life is great as a musician' and I felt that I really needed to unravel that."
He went on to share the past struggles his book touches upon, from 'being bullied in school and suffering from depression', to being 'bullied and ridiculed on national TV'.
His mel b impression was far more "brutal" and shes good friends with him and been on his shows countless times...

As important as mental health is and it's great that he's championing it, he's so wrong on Bo' Selecta. He was never bullied by Leigh Francis, he just made completely OTT caricatures of famous people that didn't resemble them at all. Obviously he didn't like it and that's his issue, but throwing the word 'bullying' around like it's nothing doesn't help anything.

Bo Selecta was hilarious.
I think people especially Craig just completely missed the point of Bo Selecta. The characters are all ironic, they are not literal representations of the people they are supposed to be, that was the whole point. As many others have said on here, the show was not about race, colour or creed, it was a comedy show, no more no less. The irony was that Craig was a cool garage/RnB artist from Southampton and the Bo character was a northerner with a pet kestrel, see the irony?! I think Craig is being a way bit over the top when he did actually appear in an episode as Craig Davis!!
In the end Leigh Francis didn't think on reflection that it was ironic. He realised that his comedy sketch was offensive. I suppose you're demonstrating a lack of understanding and the mental trauma it may have caused Craig David.

I was at a taping of 'Walk the Line', a UK singing competition in 2021 and Craig was one of the guest judges. He literally did not listen to any of the contestants when they were talking about their family or background.
One of the contestants sadly had lost her dad and had dedicated her performance to him. Craig went on to mistakingly ask questions about her losing her 'brother', which became very awkward and the producers kept having to reset his takes. Meanwhile the contestants brother was very much alive and actually sat in the audience watching.

I don't think the jokes were ever about race, although the content hasn't aged well. I do think Craig David became an unusual target though. Was it because he took himself too seriously? Or was it just a joke that went too far? As a celebrity, you're used to being told that you're the best or that your music is inspiring, but you're not used to people making fun of you. It's interesting that some people embrace it and some people take it really seriously.

'Bullying' is a rather strong term to use for a man in a rubber mask simply having a laugh, and at the same time, making others laugh. It's not bullying, it's a bit of simple fun. If Craig deems that as bullying, he needs to have a word with himself.
I think you'll find most "bullies" consider it to just be having a bit of fun. While this is more a general point on bullying rather than specifically a comment about Craig David's experiences, but joke tend to be less funny if you are repeatedly and consistently the punchline.

I know what it's like to be the focus of weak minded people who's only achievement in life is that they can 'batter' a smaller weaker person than them. I don't think for one minute I was bullied for fun, rather that the person/s doing the bullying were so miserable at how their own life was at that moment in time, or that they were failing academically, they bullied those who were simply better than them. It was also convenient that they were bigger physically. As a 45 year old, I now feel nothing but pity for those 2 people who briefly tried to make my life & others a misery. Do I think they enjoyed it or found it a bit of harmless fun? Absolutely not! They didn't get any fun out of making another look & feel worthless. They did it so they could at least feel like they were good at something in life, even if it was punching a weaker persons lights out. Craig David is a grown man who took another grown mans harmless joke far far too seriously. He wasn't bullied in the slightest. In fact, Francis's joke helped increase David's popularity.

I don’t think it was so much Leigh making fun of him that was the problem…it was more of the fans making fun of him in public which was the icing on the cake.
