      My speech therapist recommended using the hands to pull the tongue since I have difficulty sticking it to left and right. It works for me and my swallowing has improved.

    • @SpeechSecrets
      @SpeechSecrets  Před 7 měsíci

      What a great recommendation! Yes, using the hand to help the body relearn movements it may not be strong enough to do independently is a great tool.

      This is a technique I often use with labial retraction to help the affected side retract for a smile.

    Hi. My voice is breathy and low. I've been to different ENTs, but no one really knows what's going on. Tests I've had come back normal. My volume is low.Any advice?

    • @SpeechSecrets
      @SpeechSecrets  Před 6 měsíci

      I can’t give person specific advice, unfortunately. People can learn how to use their voice differently to change the tone or quality with therapy. I would be curious if something caused this change. Would try to find a speech therapist that specializes in voice for this. Your ENT may be able to recommend one.

    When a person whose mouth is twisted more to the left or right side of the face due to a stroke , should that person concentrate on exercising more on the affected side than the other side ?

    • @SpeechSecrets
      @SpeechSecrets  Před 7 měsíci

      Sorry for the late response! In general, I have people do these exercises in front of a mirror to make sure they achieve symmetry on both sides. The affected side might fatigue quicker and recruit other muscles to do the same movement so it is helpful to look at a mirror to get that visual feedback. I generally have people even with unilateral weakness do these exercises bilaterally for the range of motion, but agree at times the affected side needs more focused depending on the exercise.

      Use your hands to pull the tongue to the left and right. That’s what my speech therapist advised me to do. It has helped improve my swallowing.

    • @SpeechSecrets

      That is a great idea to assist with the movement! Your hand or a tongue depressor could be used while trying to move it in that direction.

      Hi Ruth, thanks for sharing your experience. Unfortunately, I cannot legally make any person specific recommendations. But I would definitely talk to your physician about treatment options for sialorrhea. Hoping you find what works for you and I’ll put some thought into a video on treatment options for this in the future 🙌

      Depends on what you are hoping to address.... the repetitions will also address coordination and range of motion.
