      Goldberg was Mr. 1998. That year belonged to him. Nobody escaped getting speared and jackhammered, not even Hogan who had a completely clean loss to him for the world title. For someone who was known to sabotage others rather than hand the belt over clean, it has to be said that Hogan did the right thing by putting Bill over that night in Atlanta. It was Goldberg's time and everyone knew it, even Hulk. So glad he didn't ruin that moment.

      True, but who doesn't love the Golden Girls? When I was a kid, I remember watching WWF Wrestling Challenge followed by numerous sitcoms including Golden Girls every Sunday on my local Fox affiliate.

    • @duffman18
      @duffman18 Pƙed 2 lety +10

      The golden girls was great. It was one of the first shows, if not _𝘛𝘏𝘌_ first show, to have an episode about gay people and actually treat it seriously, and not as a punchline, and showed how gay people are just normal people who want the same things in life everyone does. They're not sex crazed perverts like they'd been portrayed as on TV and cinema up until that point. No, they're just normal people who want to get married to the person they love and who loves them back. Golden Girls made a big statement by telling people all of this stuff over the course of the episode. It was controversial at the time, because of course it was, this was Reagan's America at the time, and Reagan was particularly anti-gay people (like when the AIDS crisis happened, he deliberately hired incompetent people to run the CDC, and told them these exact words: "Look pretty, and do as little as possible". Reagan deliberately blocked any scientific study into medication that could treat the illness, anything like that. He murdered all those gay men, by deliberately doing nothing
      The guy he got to run the department that dealt with AIDS, was an army general, who had no medical training, not even a biology degree let alone a doctorate in medicine or in epidemiology or anything that would have been relevant to running that department. Reagan wanted them to fail, wanted them to do as little as possible, because he and every conservative back then thought that AIDS was a divine punishment from God because of gay people's supposed "perversion" and "sin".
      Go look up Lyndsay Ellis's video about the musical RENT. Cos she explains all this stuff Reagan did
      So in the midst of all that, golden girls went and made a huge statement by portraying gay people as normal people (like they are in real life), and saying they're not perverted, and so on.
      So yeah, anyone who's a decent human being should love the golden girls.

    DDP winning the US title here definitely feels like an award for his work the night before, or at least an apology of sorts to him that he wasn't booked to beat Goldberg. It was a great match, and DDP got the absolute best out of Goldberg. DDP totally deserved to go over for the job he did that night and nobody would've argued if they had pulled the trigger. But putting the U.S. belt on him was basically Bischoff saying, "We're gonna keep pushing you and keep you in the title picture."

    Just happen to be watching this after listening to Bruce Pritchard talk utter bs about DDP's WWE run on an episode of Something to Wrestle With. Incredible that WWE get away with Pritchard's narrative that DDP didnt get over in WWE because the fans didnt buy it - no acknowledgment of the fact that they made one of WCW's main stars a heel and buried him from the moment he arrived. Its mental how WWE's mismanagement of DDP goes unchallenged these days, history rewritten by the victors... superb arc lads, had me in stitches throughout!!

      Pritchard can say what he likes, but anyone on the outside can see where they went wrong with DDP. Booking him as a creepy stalker obsessed with Taker's wife as his introduction to the company was such garbage. It came out of absolutely nowhere and was a massive departure from how he was presented in WCW. And why the hell would he stalk Taker's wife? We know who DDP is married to. It just seemed too much of a stretch for him to be stalking another woman when he has a wife like Kimberly. It was kayfabe clashing against reality far too much.

      Billy wasn’t small in wwe. He’s always been extremely tall and very well built compared to his peers. Not to say that you’re wrong, aews roster is generally very small, but bill was always a big dude even back in the attitude era. The only reason he didn’t get a ME push was because he was injury prone and pidgin holed into the tag team division early on in his career. I don’t even think the infamous rock promo really derailed his singles career as much as people like to think. He just had bad luck in that every time dx or the new age outlaws “broke up” he got hurt and missed months at a time.
