Happy to see a new player excited about the lore !
To clarify a bit, what you saw there happened 10000 years ago in the old Night Elf Empire when Azeroth was still one big continent. Azshara made a deal with the Dark Titan Sargeras to be his concubine and get power for herself and her servants in exchange of summoning Sargeras to Azeroth and dooming the world. Plan backfired when the Eternity Well used for the summoning was destroyed and caused the Great Sundering which broke the world in pieces and that's why the city was being sunk.
When she found herself under the seas, the one who offer her a new deal was N'zoth, an Old God (lovecraftian deities basically) who offered to prevent her death in exchange for her service. She negociated as you saw and N'zoth transformed her and her people into Nagas who could now live under water.
But Old Gods are incredibly clever and manipulative so she didn't really win the bargain, and in the end N'zoth got himself a slave who could call herself a queen and an army to boot.

N'Zoth needed her just as much as Azshara needed N'zoth so saying that he tricked her is just plain wrong. She bargained to buy herself more time, hence why she has been plotting against him since the beginning of the "partnership". He probably knew she would try to betray him at some point but that doesn't change the fact that their relationship was pretty symbiotic.

This cinematic showcases really well how the Old Gods work. N'Zoth clearly sees that Azshara has ego issues and uses her vanity against her by letting her call herself the queen, while the Old God is completely above this. He doesn't care if she thinks she won, in the end she will do what he wants, even though she doesn't want to admit it. It's like the quote from Game of Thrones: "If you have to tell people that you're the king, you're not really the king."

Actually, she only regretted it when she realized she wasn't going to be able to marry the Demon Titan Sargeras and be queen of the Universe. That was her plan. Only reason it wasn't completely idiotic is because she was powerful to the point where many of the demons feared her, even before her change.

@@henrywahl5633 Well Azshara was always obsessed with herself just as much as the night elf population was, even after how she betrayed her own race and the entire planet to Sargeras, I could at least respect that she would rather die than be queen and basically cucked an old god into saving her, but it was all to N'zoth's benefit. Ok a bit of story time:
Azshara was the queen of the Night Elves, over ten thousand years ago. She was one of the most power beings in the world of Azeroth. I mean, how wouldn't she? She drank from the Well of Eternity everyday: a well of inifinite magic power. But the constant use of that magic power, drew the attention of an entitity known as Sargeras, a titan bent on ending the life in all the universe, or turning everybody to join his legion.
Queen Azshara made a deal with Sargeras in exchange for even more power (she is adicted to power as you can see here... to her, power equals beauty), the deal? She would use the Well of Eternity itself to open a portal for Sargeras and his armies of demons. But something went wrong... due to the intervention of some heroes : Tyrande, Malfurion, Illidan (all of the night elves) and an orc known as Broxxigar. The Well of Eternity exploded, fracturing the world, and splitting the land mass into the continents we have now, and that's why that that city you see there, sank into the ocean (the city formerly know as Zin-Azshari (Glory of Azhsara)). That's the deal she meant when she said "this was not the deal".
N'zoth, an old god imprisioned way before these events happened, had been seeing all of this. He then offered Azshara power, and well... pretty much the ability to not die drown... In exchange, he needed Azshara to help him ennact his plan to release himself from his prission. So she turned her and her people into what we know now as "nagas"...
Naz'jatar is THAT city you see in the video, or what is left of it. You can see the very place where Azshara tried to stop the waters in there. In this xpac (BfA) is when Queen Azhara finaly puts in action her plans. SPOILER AHEAD - She planned to releaze N'zoth, but just to kill him at the very moment she releazed him. Tho this failed and N'zoth takes her to Nyalota. where WE finish him off.
On a side note: while the Nagas appear constantly ever since vanilla wow, Azshara herself has only appeard in game twice:
The 1st time, in a dungeon called Well of Eternity, where you travel to the past to the well to steal a magical device. She appears as a night elf, as the explosion of the well literaly happens after you leave the dungeon! She was also untouchable due to a magical barrier. In the dungeon they make it obvious she is way more powerful then you are at the moment and that nothing you do can even hurt her.
The 2nd time was as a magical proyection during the expansion "Legion" where she appears as a dark shadow, that looks like a Naga, but they don't show you her real form (that is only revealed in BFA) and when the character we are helping does not recognize her, she then transforms from that dark shadow to her Night Elf appearance. The spirit we are helping then attacks her, and even tho he is way more powerful then you are at the moment, he can't do nothing to her either.
Azshara is one of the very few ancient legends in the game that is still alive. Most of the original lore villains are already dead, or defeated, even Sargeras has been imprisioned...

That is Azshara from Nazjatar. she is probably one of the most interesting characters in wow lore. she was the queen of the Elves before the burning legion invaded, she made a deal to MARRY Sargaras, the leader of the legion, in return for access to Azeroth. Azshara _IS_ the most powerful Mage character from Azeroth atm... And she scaped from us claiming that: “The true throne of power beckons, and I intend to claim it.”
So ye, she is crazy evil and powerful.
But, what I found most interesting about that cinematic is that it solves one of the most curious whispers from the Puzzle Box of Yogg-Saron: "At the bottom of the ocean even light must die
    ,
The drowned god's heart is black ice."
Night Elves born with golden eyes are destined for greatness, and Azshara was called "the light of lights" by her people because of that.
Notice how her eyes turn off at 3:59

Shorter version: Queen of the Kaldorei during the War of the Ancients ten thousand years before Warcraft 1. Very vain and powerful. Made a deal with the Burning Legion and sold out her people to demons BASICALLY. Was remade along with her "Highborne" into the first naga. NOT a good guy originally, uncertain now.
    More detail:
    The Well of Eternity
After a massive artificial magical lake called the Well of Eternity was left on Azeroth by the Titans after their war with the Old Gods the creatures around it began to rapidly evolve. From that came the Zandalari and their lower castes evolved differently and broke off to form their own empires. One of those empires (Dark Trolls) settled on the borders of the well and evolved further into the Kaldorei (night elves). Unfortunately, over millennia the Well of Eternity drew the attention of Sargeras (Dark Titan, Lord of the Burning Legion) who could not physically traverse the universe to get to Azeroth and didn't exactly know where in the physical universe it was located anyway. The Well was used to create a portal powerful enough to first pull lower then higher ranking demons in from the Burning Legion in their first invasion of Azeroth.
    Azshara
She first ACTUALLY APPEARED in the book trilogy Warcraft: War of the Ancients: The Well of Eternity by Richard Knaak (The other two being The Demon Soul and The Sundering). She was first mentioned in WoW I believe. While the War of the Ancients and a lot of events tied to that were first mentioned in Warcraft 3 I don't recall if she was mentioned by name. She was very vain to the point that when her Highborne came into contact with Sargeras and the Legion she accepted an offer to cleanse the world of the "lesser" people and races including the lower caste of her own society and basically anything not Kaldorei. She also believed he would marry her and make her a god.
    The Sundering
Sargeras couldn't move through the first portal formed from the Well so more Highborne were made to channel the Well into a giant vortex that would allow his full Titan form to pass through with his true intent to destroy Azeroth. When Malfurion Stormrage and the Kaldorei resistance became aware of this Malfurion lead them to destroy the Well of Eternity. Unfortunately due to the extreme amount of spellwork and complex matrix of magics involved and how far the vortex had already formed as well as a few other circumstances they unknowingly caused the Well to implode upon itself splitting the continent of Kalimdor into the continents we have now. This event was known as the Great Sundering of Azeroth.
    Immortality and Imprisonment
Before the Sundering a former sorcerer of the Moon Guard turned demon hunter Illidan Stormrage (Malfurion's twin) drew 7 magical vials of water from the Well. Three were used to create a new, smaller, less powerful Well of Eternity in Hyjal. This and his joining the Legion with the intent to betray them (unknown to his jailers) saw the Kaldorei imprisoning him for ten thousand years within the Barrow Deeps or Barrow Dens. The Red Dragon Aspect and Queen of the Dragons Alexstrazsa planted a world tree in the Well to shield it from misuse, mask it and prevent it from gaining more power called Nordrassil and blessed it and the night elves with a stronger life force. The Green Dragon Aspect Ysera blessed it so that the night elf druids could use nature's power more easily and walk the Emerald Dream easier. Finally, the Bronze Dragon Aspect Nozdormu blessed the tree to link the night elves spirits to the eternal world making them immortal. Two of the vials were tracked down by players and looted from Kael'thas Sunstrider and Lady Vashj who were raid bosses in The Burning Crusade expansion in 2007/2008. The Bronze Dragonflight has them now. One is missing...Though it is speculated Illidan may have used it to create the Reliquary of Souls in The Black Temple back when he was a raid boss in 2.1 Burning Crusade.
    Consequences and the High Elves
So the Highborne were split into a few groups. Azshara and her Highborne are basically why arcane magic was banned in night elf society by Malfurion and Tyrande for ten thousand years. Most struggles and tragic events in Warcraft's history are the result of mortals playing with arcane or fel magic. So they exiled any Highborne found for their reckless abuse of the arcane who then sailed east to find whatever fate awaited them in the new oceans filling most of the world. They happened upon Tirisfal Glades in what would later become the Eastern Kingdoms mainly the area that would be the human Kingdom of Lordaeron much later. Their leader at this time Dath'Remar Sunstrider had stolen one of the vials from the Well of Eternity which he used at a ley line nexus (a certain spot where currents of magic flowing through a planet converge) to create the Sunwell. They renamed themselves to Quel'dorei or high elves and founded the city of Silvermoon and the Kingdom of Quel'thalas.
    Naga, Shendra'lar, and Nightborne
The Highborne closest and most loyal to Azshara and other Kaldorei who sank to the depths with her were transformed into the naga by N'zoth. Another group known as the Shen'dralar went into hiding in an area called Eldre'Thalas (Dire Maul) on the western remnant of the continent still called Kalimdor. Here they secretly battled leftover Legion forces that weren't pulled back into the Well of Eternity when it imploded (most Legion forces were). The last group was written in with the expansion Legion in 2016 and created their Nightwell on another ley line nexus in the remains of a Kaldorei city Suramar which is also where Tyrande Whisperwind is originally from. The Nightwell changed them further into the Shal'dorei or Nightborne.
    In Game
In 2010 the Cataclysm expansion introduced new race/class combinations and lore to support some of them. For night elf mages (which people who didn't know their story hated but was totally fine since they were the FIRST mortal arcane users on Azeroth) the Shen'dralar offered their aid to the night elves of Teldrassil and their Alliance and were welcomed back into night elf society to call Darnassus their home. BOOM we got mages that can Shadowmeld. OP if you like being a sneaky mage. :D Also she has only been a raid boss 10-30 player in Battle for Azeroth. Other versions of her used other models where she had brief cameos. One even used the model of a different naga boss who was once her handmaiden named Lady Vashj.
    Retcons!!!
Azshara was originally an irredeemable bitch but with Blizzard rewrites these days who knows. In the original telling of the Sundering from the War of the Ancients books she totally calls out for anything to please save her and begs Sargeras to help her as she sinks (he's gone at this point) and THEN the Old Gods answer, not one but all. The scene isn't as in depth though so that and the fact that most people haven't read the novels and don't pay attention to lore or are new is probably why they made this Warbringer for her which I do LOVE (those drums amirite?). Also pretty sure originally the Zandalari and other trolls evolved from the Dark Trolls and then one of those sub races evolved into night elves. Certain lore like this used to be kept purposely more muddy so there was more mystery of origins on some things but nowadays they like to shine a big blinding light into every mysterious dark corner of the lore. Some disagree with this as some chunks of more primordial cosmic lore and origins being more muddy let them keep spinning new things from the unknown so to speak. This is more of a write in than a retcon but when we last saw her she claims she planned on betraying N'zoth all along and gives us the dagger Xal'atath which he is vulnerable to. I think people just want to redeem her because "Yas queen!" which is fine I guess but I liked her being a genuinely despicable villain like Gul'dan. Far too many of the villains in Warcraft are "once noble, fallen to corruption" or get a slight redemption of some kind. I guess everyone has their motive though?
    Quirky Bits
I see a lot of reactors give the same take when they hear "tasted your essnce" I don't think he means what most people think he means. He's touched her mind. He can see through time and reality to some extent and read minds. In that sense he's tasted her ambitions and knows what kind of soul she is, useful. Also, they do this "Hah she got em'!" thing but if you know the Old Ones from H.P. Lovecraft's writings you know that everyone is technically eventually playing into their hands and since the Old Gods are inspired from that a bit, well I guess he got what he wanted out of her really. Some of this stuff you might not find out because most of the current raids are about to be obsolete but hey. You can always go back and solo them 10 levels higher with gear from the next expansion! (TRANSMOGGGG!)

She used the power of the well and declared it to the privilege of the Night Elf empire (Zin´Azshari = Heart of Azshara). Night Elfs didnt like each other (the poor and the rich thing just with power) but all loved Azshara. They used the well and over time it waves of power stardet to reach Sargeras (former Titan of the Pantheon now leader of the burning Legion) and he wanted to destroy Azeroth, becaus it was infected with old gods (minions of the Void Lords, beeings so powerfull nothing can kill them but they can destroy everything). But because Titans are beeings bigger than planets he couldnt get there fast so he gave a servant of Azshara (Xavius) a vision, he told her that they would get more power than they could ever imagine and all the lesser creatures would be wipet ou so the Night Elfs would be the only species. Azshara liked that thought and made the well into a portal to get the burning Legion and Sargeras to Azeroth. After the Demons (burning Legion) started to attack all living things (incloding lesser Night Elfs) a few of the Night Elf started a offens against the Legion and Azshara.
The following things would be far to complicated to explain because the War of the Ancients itself is three books long, but the Legion was pusht back and the whole continent was rippt apart (thats why the tsunami was there in the beginning).
Im sorry for my bad english but if you want to know the lore of WoW just watch some vidios from Nobbel87 he explains everything.

This exchange occurred well over 10000 years ago in the Warcraft mythos. Azshara (the elf here) is known best for three things: Being one of the most (if not the most) powerful mortal magi in history, being incredibly beautiful and being incredibly vainglorious.
Azshara was queen of the night elves back when their civilization was at their absolute peak and can be attributed with being the sole reason the Burning Legion ever set its eye on Azeroth and for shattering the once pangea-like continent of Kalimdor into the modern landmasses.

He wanted to enslave her and rebuild his empire. But she is not just any queen, she is the queen of Night Elves and she knows how to use her powers. So she struck a deal that, She will build an army with her people and conquer lands with him,but as a queen not as a slave. The old god agreed to the deal and since now her entire city is under water and now her people have to live underwater, he made them aquaticly capable to live underwater.

It´s really intresting that such a powerful name as Azshara is so well known really if u think about it. Azshara have always been a total mystery, we have some small bits here and there but apart from this cinematic there is very little confirmed lore about her, Her name have shown up in various places over the course of wow history but thats all there ever was, just a name. over the last 10,000 years there are very few feats to her and even if there are rumors they are just that wide speculative rumors, Yet still her name has survived over the course of history as among the most powerful mages on Azeroth.

Personally I love completly the Horde but there is stuff you only get one side of the picture if you dont play the other faction.
Especially now on BfA they tried to make more people to play alliance so they divided the info in three half one side of the info on the perspective of the alliance, other from the Horde Sylvanas Loyalist and other from the Horde Saurfang Supporters.

Azshara made a deal with Sargeras to cleanse the world of all the lesser races, but he tricked her to "open the door" to Azeroth for the Burning Legion. The legions arrival is the start of "the War of the Ancients" (big story). All this happened 10'000 years ago. The wave you see at the start of this one, is the effect of an event called "the Sundering" (end of War of Ancients). And the "dude" she making a deal with in this one, is N'zoth, one of the Old Gods.
And the "Mermaids" are The Naga, Azharas people. Nazjatar is the empire she creates after the deal with N'zoth.

Suramar must have been far enoght away from that point since it is still intact, having been protected by a powerful forcefield in the meantime for a few thousand years, and they made the nightwell as a replacement, which again drew the attention of the legion. Void is definitely my choice and this video is one of my top favorites by far. As it was the birth of the Naga. It is hard to know what's happening in this video without deep knowledge on the lore, most people probably don't know what it is about.
A bit of history on the world of Azeroth:
*-Ancient times:* the world was ruled by the Black Empire. 4 Old Gods ruled the world with their forces of the void. Old Gods are heavily inspired in Lovecraft mythos.
*-Not so ancient times:* Titans came from the space while ordering planets and removing void infestations from them. They arrived to Azeroth and removed the Old Gods from power, their forces were maimed and they imprisoned three of them (C'Thun, Yogg Saron, N'Zoth), and literally killed another one (Y'shaarj). That fish in the video is N'Zoth.
*-Ancient times but with sentient people already:* the Kaldorei empire of the Night Elves rose to power and controlled all of Azeroth. Using hidden power from the Well of Eternity, Azshara was raised as queen and the most powerful mage ever to inhabit the world. Due to their use of magic Azshara attracted the power of the demons and the world explode, sunking all the center under water (before Eastern Kingdoms and Kalimdor were the same continent). And what happens in the video happened, when the Kaldorei Empire capital, Zin Azshari, was sunking together with Azshara; N'Zoth offered her that deal and transformed all the Night Elves who sank into Naga and became bound to him.
By the way, the surviving Night Elves retired to Kalimdor and under the leadership of Tyrande and Malfurion abandoned and banned the use of arcane magic forever, since then they use the powers of nature and life. Tyrande that was already the High Priestess of Elune at those times (more than 1000 years ago, Night Elves were immortal), and was at odds with Azshara.

Is she evil? Yes. Unbelievably so. She was one of the most powerful mages in existence at a point where magic was at its peak. She let the demons into azeroth on the condition that the ruler of all the demons marry her (because he was the first thing that seemed to match her power). Then an underling betrayed her and the world blew up - she cut a deal with another unbelievably evil thing to save her empire.
It's still not certain if there's a mage more powerful than her. Plus as a social climber, she's planning on betraying the god who enslaved her people and installing herself as a new god.
She did seem to have a brief affair with illidan though, but it didn't last too long.
