That saxophone always catches first time listeners off guard lol
These guys deserve to be in the Rock in Roll hall of fame
I had to go and look, that tells me the HOF is a sham.
Amen.
What their NOT! That’s the Crime of the Century!
Long time ago
Agreed 💯!!
John Helliwell is a monster.
Supertramp could do NO wrong in the 70's. So many amazing songs.
This was my first song explained and translated into spanish in the eighties...
He’s trying to find himself after boarding school stripped him of his individuality. He no longer recognizes himself any more. “I know it sounds obsurd. Please tell me who I am”.
‘Take The Long Way Home’ … you’ll love it.
The whole Breakfast in America album is amazing! Goodbye Stranger is the next track on the album. Recommend!
Roger Hodgson is one of the coolest guys on earth; I met him years ago and let me tell you, this dude knows how to give hugs! Very, very friendly and nice.
Again, this is the music of my generation. I’d forgotten what a well written, arranged and executed piece this was? Thanks for the memories! ☮️💕
I love your guys’ energy. You’re going to change the world!
If ever an album demanded a full album listen... It's Crime of the Century by Supertramp. Not a bad moment from the second you press play
I second that!!
And after that breakfast in America🤘🏼
a "whole album" album, right? As is Breakfast in America to a lesser degree
I third that 🥰...OK I fifth that 🤬
@@eddhardy1054
1, 2, 3, 5!
That whole album is amazing! Not one weak song. *The cover is iconic.
Supertramp is Master Piece 😊 I do remember the first time I heard in the 70ths and I'm still love than 😊
the sax is so f ing killer... can't overstate it
So glad you guys are finally doing some Supertramp......Such a gifted, versatile, and under appreciated band IMO. You could literally pick 15-20 of their songs and they would leave you blown away. The harmonica in "Take The Long Way Home", is mesmerizing to me. Thanks so much guys, hope you enjoy this band and get to more of their great stuff in the coming months.
Curious that the boys never heard of them, I can understand the generational gap for lots of groups but these guys were the greatest band in the world for a few years. I know in my home town they (along with Charley Pride) held the local arena attendance record.
I could suggest 15- 20 songs by Hawkwind. They are having a long career.
They are bloody geniuses...
@@jonathanmol4489 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤔
@@sallybannister6224 79 to 87 ate my favorite times.
The stuff with Bob Calvert are great! Some of the stuff with Lemmy are pretty cool..
I haven't listened to anything after Electric Teepee.
Supertramp were definately huge! They were played on the radio for ages in a row. As a matter of fact, they still play them big time on the radio in Canada. They have so much to say in their songs.
Finally, my favourite band of all time. The Logical Song and Goodbye Stranger are the two most played songs from the album but there is not a bad song on the LP. You need to hit ANY song from their four consecutive classic albums between 1974-79: Crime of the Century (my favourite album by anyone ever), Crisis? What Crisis?, Even in the Quietest Moments and Breakfast In America (their most successful commercially). The next LP, Famous Last Words (1982) is also a great album. Please, please guys react to a lot more Supertramp. The ultimate anti-education system song by them is School, the lead tune from Crime of the Century. It has such a haunting harmonica intro. Supertamp uses a lot of saxophone, harmonica and even occasional clarinet but they are most known for the electric piano playing of lead singers/somgwriters Rick Davies and Roger Hodgson. Their overall musicianship is among the best of any group but their lyrics are often serious with great social commentary. Get on the 'Tramp train boys.
This album was extremely rare in that it was flawless. Set aside the time one day and listen to it straight through. Its more than worth it.
Good reaction.
Actually there are a fair few albums that are flawless (just off the top of my head I would go with: Disraeli Gears (by Cream), Cosmo's Factory (Creedence Clearwater Revival), Aqualung (Jethro Tull), L.A. Woman (The Doors), Led Zeppelin IV (??), Machine Head (Deep Purple), Demons & Wizards (Uriah Heep), Close to the Edge (Yes), Foxtrot (Genesis), For Girls Who Grow Plump in the Night (Caravan) & Secret Treaties (Blue Öyster Cult). What was class about Supertramp was that they pulled off the trick after releasing two albums that were average at best. The follow ups were anything but average however with Crime of the Century & Breakfast in America being flawless and Crisis? What Crisis? & Even in the Quietest Moments being damn close 🥰🥰🥰🥰
@@eddhardy1054 Yeah, ok. No doubt, you're always right and everybody else is wrong.
If not, what would be the point of life?
Enjoy!
@@shannonbennett987 I was merely pointing out that you were factually wrong...and I freely admit I had no idea you were so emotionally fragile that my last comment would destroy your sense of self-worth as it apparently has...and so I apologise and from now on I will only converse with people who are emotionally mature enough to cope with it. Once again my sincere apologies and Waes Hael! 😉😊🥰
@@eddhardy1054 Go away troll. I gave you the attention you so desperately needed, enjoy your safe space/crying room.
Wow John Helliwell was excellent on the Saxophone.
Next recommended Supertramp song:
“Bloody Well Right”
The piano solo intro is so sick that you’ll be replaying it in your heads the rest of the day.
I have been whistling to that sax for about 35 years and I'll probably whistle to it till the day I die
John Helliwell is such a boss on this track. The way he does that clap, looks around and across to Roger ‘Jesus’ Hodgson, effortlessly collects the sax and takes centerstage for the solo. 70’s swag! In addition to Supertramp being such a cool band name, they were just so full of talent with so many instruments here: the alto sax, Wurlitzer electronic piano, electric guitar, 12-string acoustic guitar, bass, Elka and Oberheim synthesisers, acoustic piano, Hammond organ, Hohner Clavinet with wah-wah, siren whistle, drums, castanets, timbales, cowbell, and woodblocks!
Wow! From all of those, I just know how to play the woodblocks!! :-)
You have impressive knowledge of the instruments it makes me wonder if you are in a band?Supertramp are terrific, and as you say talented.
More Supertramp. This whole album is gold.
"You hear the phone ringing?" Actually, that wasn't a phone. It was a Mattel Electronics Football game, which was a first generation handheld game that was very popular at the time. The tone that was in the song was the tone you get when you fail to get a first down on 4th down and have turned the ball over to the opponent.
That is the sound Mattel handheld football game. Played that many times in high school!
I had one of those, the sound is unmistakable.
I had that game too. Never knew it was in the song.
Had and still have the football game.
OMG _ ive heard this song hundreds of times and never put that together. I used to have that old football game. wow. Thanks for sharing that trivia.
The Logical Song is a movie for the mind if you close your eyes and listen to the journey each instrument takes you on.
Queen....Pink floyd....Led zep.....Supertramp...ELO....Beatles....RATM....SOAD....the Eels...Collective soul....Cypress hill Skull and Bones, the Bones disc is an absolute treasure
I've known Supertramp since they have came out. I've had their albums. This is the first vid I've seen of them. Thanks.
Take the long way home is a great hit!
When I was a kid, this was a huge hit here in the USA. And yes, very quotable.
You missed a chance to begin your comment with “when I was young…” :)
The youngs guys descovering the best music from the past. The best musics.
"Lady". "Gone Hollywood." "Goodbye, Stranger" "Take the Long Way Home." These guys have lots of great stuff.
Soundtrack of my teenage years. I was lucky...
The Crime of a Century. A must Surertramp album to react. Thank you for this beautiful once again reaction.
Supertramp. One of the best bands ever. What great concerts
Favorite Supertramp piece
I’ve got to be honest; I never gave this group a chance because of their name. It’s stupid. I’m glad I’ve finally started listening to them. They are so fantastic. So many good songs. This particular album is amazing from beginning to end.
Coincidentally, they have a song called “School” which was a popular FM song you can still hear on classic rock stations.
Yeah caught that too Mike! Lol
YES, Mike - this is my favorite by Supertramp! Hope they react to it :)
That song was played very little when album released. It built up a little steam with each passing year though.
School was the perfect song for audio store sound rooms. Just about everywhere you went that LP was in the premium listening room.
School was the first Supertramp song I ever listened to in 1975 and was hooked from there on. I also liked the Crisis What Crisis album which was overlooked by critics
This whole album was amazing. We Canadians know a good thing when we hear it..lol.
The "phone" sound was actually Coleco Football, a handheld game that was huge at the time.
@ 8:47 that digital versus and sound is actually from an NFL game boy style box of the day, the sound engineer was playing during the rehearsal and they added that because they loved the sound, this predates cell phones btw. These guys were masters of sounds.
So much Supertamp to hear and EVERY SONG on most of their albums are straight up FIRE! Pic any song off “BREAKFAST”, can’t go wrong!
This song, and the whole album, was huge in Canada. I was in grade 9 or 10 when it came out, and everybody was singing it. Never had a song moved me before
The Logical Song was a double single with "Goodbye Stranger" off of the same album. Both big hits. You guys will love Goodbye Stranger, it has IMO the greatest outro guitar solo in rock history.
Yeah that outro is great, and so is the one on Boston's "Hitch A Ride". Can't go wrong with either pick IMO.
Agreed its masterful
The lyrics are about childhood wonderment, innocence and imagination lost as you get older and need to be more logical, responsible etc.
A vegetable
This album cover is iconic & timeless. The song was a game-changer. Glad you listened to this masterpiece and liked it.
These guys can easily produce the sound effects for a movie with no problem. All I can say is... nostalgia, what a beautiful song!!
Goodbye Stranger is a masterpiece, what a band
The song's about Roger Hodgson going off to boarding school for ten years in his youth and being educated-- the converging of childhood innocence through the transition of becoming a responsible, "logical," yet cynical young adult.
Such a great and underrated band. Goodbye Stranger is my favorite, but you can’t go wrong with them.
It is a great song and that saxophone is just a banger!
I agree,horns are my fav.
The Breakfast in America tour in 1979 - one of the best concerts I ever went to.
Yes, I remember people singing this in middle school.
Yes when I was in high school i kept hearing this song not knowing who? But i liked it, it came on in the background at the school store where i was hangin, asked who is this, and 3 hot girls there immediately said the "Logical Song" and thats how I discovered the band..
Burned into my brain...
when played the way i like it , the sax always chokes me up especially heaaring this song again
This song was huge! I was 2 years into junior college living with roommates/workmates. Very thought provoking song at the time!
Every song is a masterpiece ❤️
Love your reaction!!
The meaning of the song isn’t really just digging at the school system - it’s about our social system.
You grow up and everything is innocent then they throw you into school you must comply. Then you get out of school and you must watch what you say or they will throw you in jail or a psych ward and medicate you hence the vetchtable lyric !! It’s amazing analogy
I was sent away as a child. This song makes me cry 😢❤
That wasn't a phone, that was the first handheld video game, it made that sound when the quarterback squiggle throws an incompleted pass, or got tackled.
This is my favorite album of all time. Every song is perfect. Not a single bad one. And the album cover is my favorite too, don’t you dare say it’s “dated.” It’s creative and artistic. 😭🤣
Supertramp equals creative genius.
Growing up in the 70s, those timeless memorable songs never leave you👍🏴
Omg… my favorite song of all time! It takes me back to my childhood every time I hear it! You guys are going to love it!
More More the album of supertramp
I LOVE SUPER TRAMP HELL YES IM NEW HERE I LOVE THEM THANK YOU
Supertramp was, indeed, very big in Canada
I have been fortunate enough to have seen Supertramp “The Tramp” Live 4 times. Their live shows are a spectacle and brilliant. Each member is a musical genius. Rick Davies is my favorite keyboards player and John Helliwell is favorite Sax player. He is a blast to watch live. The bass and drummer are awesome and Roger’s guitars are superb. The only live show I put above Supertramp is Pink Floyd, who I have seen 4 times.
Super sound Super group supertramp.
All I can say is....Brilliant...Fantastic..!!!
Empathy is not illogical, but rather, illogical is the man completely removed from empathy.
The radio stations played this all the time and I loved it so much!!! Still do. 🤘❤️
I have never seen Ryan smile so much during a song as this one. I forgot what a great song it is. Thanks for reviewing!
Good job guys. Supertramp is an all-time favorite. Especially early Supertramp. Too many great songs to list but a few are Crime of the Century, School, Fools Overture. Peace.
You guys are fantastic & loved when you said & I quote “HE LOOKS LIKE JESUS” end quote! Lol loved it & definitely love this song,I’ve always loved Supertramp from way back, was my favorite band back in the day ❤️
An excellent synopsis of the songs meaning! Wondered how many listeners have understood this. Th tune is brilliant.
Here’s one song by Supertramp I’ve been requesting over and over and have never heard anyone react to this song. It’s got some kick ass saxophone work in it. The name of the song is “my kind of lady“
More Supertramp please.
I remember this song being number 1 here in Canada when it was released!
One of the best concerts that I ever saw was Supertramp…the Crisis What Crisis tour in 1976 which was an album often overlooked but as excellent as Crime of the Century and Breakfast in America. Amazing album cover which is very appropriate for today’s times.
I watched a video on YT where Roger Hodgson explains the meaning behind this song. In a nutshell, the boarding schools in England at the time were popping out individuals who went in as hopeful, sensitive and imaginitive children and because of the treatment and indoctrination they received there, they came out as cynical, angry and unemotional people. The song was a protest against that educational system. Rick Davies disagreed with Hodgson and wrote a song addressing Hodgson's outspokenness called Bloody Well Right.
Live, they felt like those heady bands made up a music school mates. Very brainy compositions, that require serious skill to play. And the solos were always just enough of what they needed to be to be the famous song, and yet they'd change enough to be truly impressive. They were big hit-wise, but they deserved more credit for being a prog rock band.
Follow up with Goodbye Stranger.
The keyboard in that gives you chills down the spine and goosebumps all over.
They had a run of 4 albums that are untouchable.
You KNOW what they are.
They were called the UK’s answer to Steely Dan,I cannot disagree.
"Sends Shivers through my Veins"😉
I saw these guys in concert and they played every song just like the albums!! I love that cuz I can sing along!
Just watching him cheese when the saxophone comes out. Killer
You Guys must react to these other's super songs from them : "Take the long way home", "Goodbye Stranger", "It's Raining Again", "Breakfast in America", "Dreamer", "Blowing that Right", "Give a Little Bit", "Don't leave me now", "School" & "Crime of the Century"
Bloody Well Right, not Blowing that Right. It was their first American hit.
Don’t forget “From Now On.” It’s a shame it’s only a B-side.
Excellent song! Take The Long Way Home, etc..... I love the saxophone in this song, it makes the song! I also love the clacking sounds not sure of what type of instrument.
Hit after hit after hit. If ST had been American, they would be in TMHOF. One of the top 20 or 30 bands (with A++ for songwriting) in history.
True purpose in life ..who knows. Make somebody smile today? 👌🏼 Kickass reaction guys! Who knew, even pop can be progressive at times.
Loved Supertramp 😍
I am only going to say this one time folks. "War" by Edwin Starr was the best anti-war song of all time in the 70's. You will never be the same once you hear it.
LoL You guys makes me feel old, until I realize these songs are 40+ years old. 😩😩 : three claps :
This was on the radio all the time back then. Supertramp was quite popular. Loved your reactions!!
Definetly one of most seriously underrated bands. One of my favourite bands of all time.
Back in the day...it was all about the radio. You KNEW it was a Supertramp song the second it came on. Then...you ran to Sam Goody's or Tower records to buy what you just heard. Every one of my friends had the album 'Breakfast in America'. Thanks for the reaction!
Deeper dive to get the treasure: Child of Vision. On the album it's superb... live it's transcendental
......💅🏻💅🏻💅🏻....Crime of the Century album.....😍
Nice so talented, supertramp is awesome!!
This is a great version of a studio song “performed” by the band. It looks real, but the band is “singing” a mastered studio version. 😁❤️
Music on official clips is not live? Wow such a discovery
Don't know what effect they had on school kids since I was out and, in the military, when this came out, but it made me want to learn to play the sax. Always loved all of their stuff. My favorite from them is "Take the long way home".
I've always thought this song spoke to "expectations or labels " of who you need/ are to be, such as dependable, responsible, logical....This could be with yourself or others. In the song, he sings " please tell me who I am." True purpose can come from many influences and some never find it. Have always loved this song. Great reaction guys ❤️
