  • Stopped by my neighbor Jason to remove the Gas tank and carb from this 2002 Honda Shadow Sabre VT1100 so that both the tank and carb could be serviced.
Honda is not my forte, but Ive worked on a few so I should be ok. Naturally we drain the tank, and its easy to tell that there is gas rot in the system. With that completed, two bolts removed and the tank comes right up, removing one small line in the back, after planning for a good place to put it.
Took a brake for a moment to take a look at the condition of the petcock, and it was horrid. This meant a new one since it was leaking and the tank was filled with varnish, so we will revisit with kerosene later.
Looking at the connector pod everything seems ok and will be addressed later.
The disassembly begins to remove the carb and everything has to be done in the right order as there is little room to work. Starting with the over flow tank, and then the intake manifold. Disconnecting non essentials like spark plug wires also helps.
The enrichener connections were a disappointment, in my opinion could have been designed better. Yamaha wins on that one for sure. Noticing a small air filter that has disintegrated id removed from the top of the carb was a tell-tale sign of problems to come.
The removal of the rubber hoses were done with care as they were not easy to remove, a purging process will have to be done for the fuel system once the carb is removed to get all of the garbage out of the lines.
The throttle cables showed that the chrome caps for the heads required removal in order to gain access. Not a big deal but worth mentioning. Furthermore the bracket that holds all of the cables onto the carb was also helpful.
Finally, the carbs are unscrewed from the lower manifold so that it can be torsioned out of the rubber tubes. More chrome would need to be removed to rotate and pull the carbs clean out from the right side of the frame.
Immediately, The lower manifolds will be cleaned and oiled and packed with paper towel so that nothing gets into the engine. The carbs will now be rebuild and the tank will be serviced.

Thanks alot for posting these videos, my girlfriends 2000 Honda Shadow Aero C3 had sat for 6 months when we bought it. 34,000 miles on it. Paid $2000. Anyway, was running at half power, one fouled plug. I knew it needed a carburetor rebuild. I replaced the fuel pump and fuel filter while I was at it. I couldn’t have rebuilt the carburetors without your videos! Thanks a bunch!

JR... An excellent video of the Premier Division. 5 star work and your attention to detail is truly professional. I have a 98 Aero and swapped out VT 1100s. You made it easy for me and this was my first MC job! Thank you.

Just followed your excellent videos, carb rebuild and replaced with larger 6Sigma jets for Vance and Hines Longshot exhaust. Sub air filter totally disintegrated like you showed. Starts and runs better than ever.

Some of the removal steps are reminiscent of "I Know an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly". Thanks for these videos, I am sure I could get through this but it sure helps to have the benefit of your experience, almost like I have done one before.

Several questions I have, Ive watched the 4 videos, and awesome job you did!
Although you skipped one part, when you remove the Choke needles, the lever has to be all the way up? or all the way down? (choke lever on the left side of the handeblar)
Also what website did you get the Gasket sets and would it be better to buy it from OEM ?
What Carburator cleaner you used? and
Can I use compressed air cleaner like the ones for the computers to clean inside the small holes? [in a can] (office max probably brand lol)
Did you clean the middle black hose?, the one thats inbetween the carburators??
On the last video I think you needed to dial the carbs correctly (number of turns) to prevent backfires (imo only... maybe also it was the exhaust not being on the bike itself)
Sorryy for making too much questions but I am starting mine today! im excited!
What happened was that I noticed my left air intake manifold not all the way in and my carbs maybe got dirty cause of that and my bike doesnt want to turn on, so i have to work on it!

Hey, great video, its so important that people know how meticulius one should be when cleaning a carb, really great video, I just picked up an 03 sabre, awsome bike,,,,when using the REM oil on the diaphram slides, should they be cleaned dry or can oil remain on them, do find good advantages when using this product? Also, when you were cleaning the jets they were varnished a bit, what were you cleaning them with that made them shine like that? TY again

Ill be working on an older vt1100 and was wondering; is there a carb rebuilt kit or is everything supposed to be ordered as needed?

Was wondering if anyone could offer some advice? I've got a 99 shadow spirit 1100. Ran fine pulled the carbs to clean reinstalled but now I have no neutral indicator light up, though I know it's in neutral. Also it will not start in neutral unless clutch is pulled in, kick stand up and it won't idle in neutral but dies the min I let clutch out. I know it a half click up and bike doesn't jump forward like it would if in gear and clutch let out? I've Googled and CZcamsd but can't find anyone with an idea. If anyone has some ideas please give me a shout. I'm desperate to get riding again

Honda calls that unmentionable part at the top of the fuel line a "fuel valve," just for future reference.
