"Weird Al" Yankovic - I Lost on Jeopardy (2022 version) - excerpt

- I re-recorded a bunch of my old songs for use in the Roku Channel biopic (WEIRD: The Al Yankovic Story), and this is the one that got left on the cutting room floor. I didn't record the whole song, just one chorus - the reason being that we only needed a couple seconds of it for the movie. It was originally going to be used in the drunk driving scene, where Weird Al (Daniel Radcliffe) is repeatedly changing the channels on his car radio (and all the songs are Weird Al songs). Eric Appel (the director) and I ultimately decided that we didn't need to include this song, because we hadn't introduced it previously in the movie, and also because it would have cost us several thousand dollars extra in licensing fees. But since my band and I went through all the trouble of recording this 22-second masterpiece, we figured SOMEBODY should hear it!
Oh, and BTW, if you want to hear all the stuff that actually DID make the movie, check out the soundtrack album: tinyurl.com/5errr2dr
UPDATE/CLARIFICATION: For the people confused about the “licensing fees” part - I don’t own the publishing on my parody songs, the songwriters of the originals do. And basically, they can charge whatever they want to charge when the song is used in TV shows and movies. Nirvana’s publisher quoted a 6-figure price for us to use “Smells Like Nirvana” in the movie - which is why it is not in the movie. Greg Kihn’s quote was actually quite reasonable - but we were a relatively low-budget production, and every penny counted! One of the reasons why we re-recorded my old tracks was so that I could own the master recordings (y'know, like Taylor!) So I saved some money by not having to pay my old record label for master usage, but I still have to pay the publishing fees for the actual songs, which are sometimes prohibitive. Make sense? - Komedie
for years and years of my life i was under the assumption that both the parody and real song of this had the same lyrics which was a really fun means of existing
Same, it was weird to find out they were actually different...
Of what is I lost on Jeopardy a parody of?
@@VSDeluxe Greg Kihn Band - Jeopardy (The chorus goes "Our love's in Jeopardy") czcams.com/video/43_GqFW7iYc/video.html
@@needscheeseis curious because the chorus of the original sounds like Evil ways by Santana
this isnt a parody
After all these years this is the closest we’ve seen Weird Al re-record I Lost on Jeopardy. I’m surprised he never updated the lyrics to include Alex Trebek when that became the more popular version.
Weird Al did actually appear on Jeopardy!. Art Fleming was the host at the time.
@@clintonwilcox4690 He was never on the Art Fleming Jeopardy!, however he was on Rock and Roll Jeopardy, which aired from 1998 to 2001.
@@clintonwilcox4690 think you replied to the wrong comment.
I actually kinda like that it's an older host. It somehow makes it feel more timeless to me that it's never been the host I "knew"
Love the memories of my grandpa and I listening to Weird AL. Thank you for everything
Thanks a great big pantload for that. I didn't think i was _that_ fucking old.
@@Drchainsaw77 Yep hard to believe we are.👍

I was *not* expecting a 2022 remaster of this classic!! Super excited to hear the full thing!
EDIT: The description was blank when I initially commented this.
I hate to burst your bubble, but you should probably read the caption...
Unfortunately, the description says he never re-recorded the whole thing, just this small clip, but decided it shouldn't get unheard because it was cut from the movie
He should do a full album of more remasters
You won't!
First of all, it's a new recording, not a remaster. Secondly, you're not gonna hear the full song.
The new recordings of some of the older songs were easily the absolute best part of the movie in my opinion. Keep up the great work, Al! 😁
I disagree whole heartedly. The originals are far superior. These just don't have the same heart as his original versions and sound way too processed.
@@englishatheart And I respect your opinion on them. I do like the originals as well.
I wish more artists would re-record their old songs more often. It can be especially cool to hear an artist who has improved their talents over the years (and improvements in recording technology). We effectively get to hear new versions of old songs in concert, so why not on recording? Thank you Al for these new versions!
I agree, I love hearing these songs redone in studio quality
Except ace of base. Linn Berggren kinda lost her singing voice from doing lots of vocal lessons
Original sounds better
@@jasontheredfox Like NSP's album Level Up
@@justsayin._. Smartest name ever
I was sad the biopic had no 100% original Weird Al compositions played in it - except Eat It, which of course was entirely his song.
"Now You Know" isn't a parody, is it?
Actually! Eat it is a parody of Michael Jackson's song, Beat It.
@@imded_Roblox common misconception; Eat It actually came first, and Beat It is the parody.
@@beesokay Beat It came out in 1982 while Eat It came out in 1984.
@@imded_RobloxI think you’re getting the dates mixed up.

I cried when I watched Maddona’s Drug Cartel kill him on live tv back in 85’ 😭
I heard this rough demo he was working on in 1984 called White & Nerdy. Like Eat it, it was another original..it had so much potential being one of the biggest hits he could’ve ever had. Way ahead of his time.
He isnt died. Movie was just a joke

I must admit I was kinda hoping for a full re-recording with updated lyrics in tribute to the Alex Trebek era (RIP)!
The category is "Things that we'd love to have but probably won't happen, but we got a Weird Al biopic, so there's a chance".
What is "an updated 'I Lost On Jeopardy' video with Will Ferrell as Alex Trebek"?
How many of Weird Al’s songs are remembered better than the original songs they were parodying? This is definitely one of them.
what was teh original im too lasy to googl
@@parsnipguy2986 Jeopardy was the song name.
Sometime it goes far, I saw "fat" before "bad" and the harm was done, even if the stereo play "bad" my brain hear "fat" 😁
How is this 23 second clip and the description for it making me laugh my butt off? Why is this man such a dang genius
Because he's WEIRD AL YANKOVIC! THAT'S WHY!
There were no jokes in the video, but you have well-founded confidence that there's going to be good new jokes not in the original.
@@ConspiracyNuts Read the description. As I said the clip coupled with the description is what made me laugh.
Happy 64th birthday, sir. Thank you for all the smiles you've put on millions of faces all over the world.
I've been your fan since 2005, thanks for making my life so happy here in Brazil.
come to brazil
Believe it or not, but this is my favorite Weird Al song. I would absolutely love to hear the whole thing updated for the modern era as a tribute to Alex Trebek and the new popularity the show has achieved over the years.
I'm just here for Weird Al trying to explain the intricacies of intellectual property law by citing Taylor Swift, knowing that's how most of the public now understands the concept of a master recording.
you don't have to get permission to write a parody of a song.
@@danieladams4001 Read the description on the video. It's not about permission to record a parody. It's about permission to use the master recording of a parody. Weird Al, like Taylor Swift, does not own the master recordings of many of his songs. But if he re-records them, then he owns the new masters. LegalEagle does a nice job of explaining the legal part of this conundrum. czcams.com/video/M-A_RrOeoWw/video.html
@@danieladams4001 No you don't...IF you don't intend on making money from it
However, Al makes sure he has permission (and a royalties contract) before he releases a song for purchase (Coolio being the one exception, but in that case he was told Coolio gave the go-ahead)
I would LOVE a full version of this
I know I'm not the only one when I say that I would love for there to be a full remake of I Lost on Jeopardy. I know it might not happen, but I am at least glad these 22 seconds of it exist.

So awesome to get new stuff from this artist even after his tragic death, if you haven't seen his biopic please do so, beautiful story
It's amazing all the original recordings he made that were released after his death (and all the rat bastards like Nirvana and Chamillionaire making parodies of his work!)
You're a winner in my eyes

Nice, I bought many of your older albums for Christmas this year. Nothing like Yankovic bringing in some holiday cheer and merriment.
I remember reading somewhere (or maybe hearing about it on the Inside Jeopardy! podcast or something) that a snippet of the song was supposed to be in the film and was perplexed by its absence. Thanks for clearing that up, Al.

I believe we all would lose on jeopardy, they ask questions that would involve actually learning something at school, and reading actual books instead of wikipedia, nowadays you just pay and get your title, and a frack-ton of debt.
still love your music... have a lot of that on my phone and people cannot seem to notice the difference with the songs they are based on.
Legends say that when Weird Al posts on CZcams, one can hear the great choir from above.
I wish Al hosted Jeopardy instead of Mayim Bialik
What do you have against Mayim?
That's not a fair comparisson. Every show would be 10x better if Al was the host.
I would watch every night.
