does anyone else remember the build function on roblox? it was the button next to edit on the developer page, you would use stamper build tools and just build whatever on a baseplate or terrain based area, i have quite a few games that were made only with this function, i think it'd be interesting to cover on a youtube video.
I wish things like this could come back, but Roblox wants users to use Studio, and FE exists, so have to work with events
The original building tools, the pointer, to move. The magnifying glass thing, to copy a brick, and the hammer, to delete a brick.
i did, as a kid i always used that to make some very bad and dumb games, i actually thought that was the only way to make a game and was surprised to see games of other people and wondered how they did that

hey, amazing video as always, really enjoyed hearing about the obbies in 2006-2008 especially :)
just a few things I want to say:
- it would've been cool to see tiered obbies get a mention, they're basically obbies that have their own dedicated game and are made as a challenge for obbyists. Stairway to Heaven (mentioned in the vid) is a good example of this, being a tier 19 at hardcore mode. There's a whole community dedicated to beating obbies like these, and the hardest obbies beaten so far are in tiers 16 and 17 :)
- towers are not colour-coded to difficulty, the floor colours are purely for design purposes (except tower of difficulty chart, which like its name suggests, is a tower that increases in difficulty throughout)
- it would have been nice to see fe2/fe2mt get talked about too, its maps were incredibly popular with many youtubers playing them in 2017-18
- super checkpoint was also somewhat popular, but it may or may not be mention-worthy
- this is probably not mention worthy at all, but adopt me has its own mini collection of obbies too, all of which are admittedly easy lol
edits:
- the first difficulty chart obby was also the impossible obby by welololol as far as i know (thanks Sombez for reminding me), but the game is being remade from the original obby so that may be a reason why it isn't in this video/it wasn't found

@@sombez yup I think so too. but i don't think the original version of the obby is up anymore as it's being remade so i think that's why it may have been difficult to research
For the jtoh part, the colors might be the color of the portal. (For example, ToA has a green portal, and it’s easy difficulty)

A few corrections: JToH towers don’t usually get harder as you get further. And they also aren’t color coded on each floor to their difficulty. Each tower has a set difficulty that stays the same difficulty, well, unless it has crazy difficulty spikes like Tower of Frightening Nightmares which is very easy until floor 8 - 10.
Ring 1s towers usually have difficulty progression but other than that you're right

Despite 15 years of evolution, not much has changed since the overuse of “jump over a thing” and “jump over a hole” obstacles.

They do have a set difficulty, but the color of the floor doesn't determine the difficulty of that floor. I just wanted to point that out, and other than that, great video! Also thanks for including JToH :)
Yeah, that's right. Other than ToDC and every other DC tower. They are just difficulty chart obbies without checkpoints and in a tower.

I am honestly surprised you didn't mention the "FAT PAPS era". Those obbies were so iconic due to the giant watermark that was on top of your screen.

Very informative video! I actually do remember playing WaffleBoy's Obstacle Course game back in 2007 (I don't think I really ever got too far into it, but then again, MrDoomBringer, miked, and even one of the best Brickbattlers at the time, Koopa didn't make it very far either). I also remember playing some old 2007 obstacle courses by Sora867. Yeah, I played ROBLOX back in 2007, so I think I can share some more information with you about ROBLOX in that year (and also some info about ROBLOX in other years) if you want!
Sidenote: Waffleboy's Destiny Squares was originally called Extreme Four Corners, and "the Chosen one" in the game was originally called "the godly one", until it was changed for religious reasons.
As someone who had quite literally sold my soul just to beat Stairway To Heaven in just under a day *yes it went on for that long*, I am glad to see that it was finally recognized, you're the first person I know of to recognize it as an obby, and at that, the most difficult and painfully long one in ROBLOX History, but that's just in my opinion.

jtoh towers are infact are just colored by the tower creator, the only tower that has the colors according to their floor difficulties is tower of difficulty chart - ring 2's soul crushing tower
I really liked the video. Talking about Roblox obbies is one of those subjects I like to see people on CZcams talk about. I joined Roblox in 2017 and the very first game I played was Hide & Seek Extreme. I loved it so much! Then I started playing Meepcity, Jailbreak, Adopt and Raise a Baby...and then Roblox obbies! It's one of my fav memories I've made throughout all these years of gaming on Roblox, and that's why I favourited most of the old Roblox games that I used to play back then.

The first difficulty chart is by it_nice/join mod in that used to be jtoh, ToDCC, Tower of Difficulty Chart: Classic, it is called this because it got revamped into Tower of Difficulty Chart, and ToDCC got removed by it_nice's request, also when this was added JToH was known as KToH.

Kinda sad you never mentioned Escape McDonald's Obby. I'm pretty sure it was the first "escape" obby on the platform, and somehow managed to be at the top of the front page in 2016 until Jailbreak was released. The creator, StealthPwn has unfortunately left Roblox, and hasn't been active for 10 years. The game still works even with Roblox updates breaking older games.
Just recently found this channel, joined Roblox in June 2009. Man, your videos bring me a nostalgia, one that feels very good around these christmas times. Where do you find the old screenshots of the website and the game? I have a couple of youtube channels where I uploaded Roblox videos in 2010 and 2011.

I have played JToH for the past 3 years now, and I was watching this video to pass the time when playing JToH, and it warms my heart that you actually mentioned it. It's so underrated and I really think you should give it a try
Don’t forget about orb obbies. These satirical obbies have no checkpoints, and plot is usually the villain(s) capturing the creator of the obby. They are first created by Tinfoilbot. He made the Dark Orb series, the first series of orb obbies. The titular antagonist of the series is The Apprentice, a pig mutate who captures Tinfoilbot. When Tinfoilbot quit on 2018, orb games were stopped being created and the orb community was dying afterwards.

Tinfoilbot is an alternate account of JustPlas according to a forum poster who figured it out on 2011 (when Tinfoilbot was new), and a video uploaded on 2021. He claims to be the most famous user of the site, the son of Roblox CEO David “builderman” Baszucki, and young. The account quit on 2014, but returned on 2016. The account later quit again on 2018, he claimed he was “grounded”. However, he updated his games in 2020. His main account was believed to be Merely. Merely was featured in Tinfoilbot’s CZcams videos. However, this is most likely false. Merely claimed that his main account is mechawaffle. Tinfoilbot denied his account being an alternate account, and claims that it is his main one.
i thought about this while making the video - i used to be a part of the orbing community from around 2014-16(?) when i was younger. i didn't think they were important enough esp. cuz tinfoilbot's videos were more popular than his games from what i remember. i'm definitely making a video about tinfoilbot & the orbing community sometime in the future though. how weird the orb community was, the whole tinfoilbotTruth thing, & everything else

All though I don’t play Roblox anymore and despise it’s current state I watch these type of videos for the memories of when it was good for everyone
I feel like a good idea for obbies is making full Mario-like adventures. Maybe adding enemies and different mechanics, longer (about 3-5 minute) stages with maybe 1 or 2 checkpoints in the stage, and a gradually rising difficulty curve (maybe ending at Hard or Difficult on the JToH chart) so that most people don't just blow through it, but noobs can easily get into it. Escape obbies put more effort into aesthetics, but the level design is mind-numbingly boring. Meanwhile, towers put more effort into the level design, but often don't put much effort into the aesthetics and may just end up being too hard for most people. I love JToH, but introducing people to it who aren't already into hard platformers is just not happening.
Adventure Forward, Adventure Forward 2 and Super Paper Roblox probably fit this description, unfortunately the creator Explode1 was caught in some controversy which got him suspended.

Packstabber was such a hack, I worked on every Shovelware obby and when we were rolling out a lot of obbies he started copying our stuff to the T down to even just, stealing our assets sometimes. It was really strange

It’s absolutely criminal to make a condensed chronology of ROBLOX obbies throughout history and leave out games like Adventure Forward: Star Savior, a spiritual successor to Polyhex’s ROBLOX Adventure series that heavily popularized the concept of combining the base obby formula with a concise story. The game still retains a passionate fandom LOOONG after the cancellation of Explode1 for being a groomer, just showing how influential the game was to a lot of peoples’ lives. ROBLOX even included it as part of the secret achievement gift for 2014’s Giftsplosion, and had both the original game and the sequel receive the spotlight by ROBLOX themselves in the blog. It’s an unjustly underrated game series that not a lot of people like to reflect on despite the large footprint it left on future games to come, and makes for a really good video topic.

Dude MonkryMonkry’s obby was literally my go to place whenever I came back from school and hoping straight into my dying laptop. I just want to shed a tear knowing that I will never experience this feeling again, life was much more simpler back then as a kid.
