      Mate,I have operated these trucks for 20 years and trust me they are the most uncomfortable things to drive,they have no real suspension (they do but it's for holding such weight and not comfort) the seat is the only suspension you get. If you drive into a hole that's a foot deep you will get thrown around the cabin even hit your head on the roof,that's if you don't have your seat belt on,and there are times you just jump in and go forgetting the belt.

    I’ve worked for a Cat dealer since 1994. I spent many hours fixing and actually did quite a few rebuilds of these good old girls. Thanks for the memories this brings. Tranny oil is definitely not good. Too much water can ruin the clutch discs.

    • @Kinghauler2012
      @Kinghauler2012 Před 2 lety +31

      @@amunderdog hard to say. Could be moisture build up from years of sitting, maybe fill cap left open for a few months, top cover gasket gone and winter snow melts in spring gets into case. Ive seen plenty of dozer winches full of milky oil and not due to sinking in water but just top cover gaskets are shot and water migrates in. It doesn’t take a lot of water to cloud oil, the problem is, lots of water will effect any clutch packs that have friction discs made from cellulose based material vs rubber. Water causes them to swell so when you think the clutch pack is not engaged it’s actually still rubbing and contacting. Typically first gear is a rubber based disc and other are more water sensitive.

Here in Aus we would run a CEM engine flush to clear the buildup around the rings, a very good chance that would fix the blowby. In other words, you didn't pull that engine and fix everything on that haul truck. You did what was smart and correct investment to get the work you need done! Most people either drive it until it drops without enough maintenance or they rebuild everything - Money and time is wasted in both cases!

    After looking below at just a glance and seen a short comment by a english teacher, I feel I met my match in witticism an cut to the chase. I am guessing that even though most of these large machines get put to bed wet.... I have to think with that many hours some haven't been as hard as say those gold miners on the Yukon where soft wire is the best they have for cotter pins. If its a liquid then close enough for who we work for. I have worked up there when the famous Tony Beets was a pup or guess what mom, there is a foccell in our yard and it moves. I have only memories of things we did an sometimes they are worse than the trip uncle sam gave me in the late sixties. I mainly spent most of my time in the southeast alaska islands and when something large came... it died there. All those islands where there was mining or logging mostly has the carcuses of dead equipment laying in pits and we called them bone yards as it was where we got our "new to use" part just repurposed for it. Out at Thorne Bay where government subsidized roads to open for public eventually, was muskeg that just didn't have a bottom and we hauled rock into those spots. A dozer gets stuck and started down, they gave a half hearted attempt to get it out and then if not our, let the muskeg have it and build road over it. One crazy spot was known to have got three D8s and something else in it too deep before moving forwards with the road. I think it will last a while this machine that you got as a whole looks fair to me. What would I know though and only thousands of miles away on a computer.... at least it is not a grandmothers basement/LOL

    Hello, don't know how you feel about free advice but to get the big windfall moving I would have done two things different. First of all I would have filled the truck with dirt or gravel or something to increase your traction friction ratio. The big difference would be to put your choker or chain on and back up so you can rotate the cable around the base several times (4-5 times) and cause the tree and stump to roll once the cable gets tight. Loggers do this all the time to roll a tree away from the stump. I might not have explained this strategy clearly but I tried. Cheers from Canada.

      @nikola6413 Před 2 lety +3

      I have this dilemma that's unclear to me and I want to ask since you sir seem like the correct person to ask. It's just very confusing to search for it online.
      Do hydraulic cylinder speeds vary, can you make them go faster or slower with a faster flow oil pump? Can the hoses actually limit the flow and the speed of the cylinder and the pump? Theoretically, if you use wider diameter hoses would you be able to achieve more speed? I'm just very curious what's the limiting factor. Do you lose power if you make a cylinder go faster, if that's possible ofcourse.
      Thank you for your time, I'm only 23 and I'm learning, these things are very interesting to me along with everything related to mechanics.

    • @jeroen1914
      @jeroen1914 Před 2 lety +7

      @@nikola6413,
      Yes yes and no haha, more oil flow will result in faster movement of the cylinder and also more speed/rpm if you would connect a hydraulic motor.
      Hoses can be the limiting factor for sure but the size of each hose and connection is always over engineered or rated well over the flow that is needed in that application.
      Too much restriction in hoses/couplers will turn into heat and create pressure differences which in simple terms just means you will lose pressure from the beginning {the pump} to the (machine/cylinder/whatever)
      All these things are losses which cost money as you do have to put the power in to the pump but you are not getting all the power out of it.
      Regulating the oil flow with the pump itself is very common, im not going into all the details but many pumps have a variable flow capabilty which can be controlled in many ways to speed things up or to keep temperatures under control ot even keep the input power (the Amps or KW's contant).
      So yes, you can make things go faster by flowing more oil out of the pump itself and hoses are very rarely a limiting factor.
      No, higher speeds dont necessarily mean you lose power because the power you are referring to is probably the way you would describe how strong a cylinder is and thats not exactly how it works.
      The amount of force a cylinder can put out is a result of the pressure and offcourse the dimensions of the cylinder but that is not relevant in this example.
      Lets say a cylinder is mounted so it can lift things and lets say it can lift 10 tons at 250 bar pressure
      This 250 bar is max pressure which get set by a pressure relief valve somewhere in the system.
      Flowing more oil has nothing to do with pressure, (well it has but thats way to much info haha). it would simply mean it would also move faster as well but still being set at 250 bar it would still lift 10 tons.
      BUT, there is a catch offcourse, Flowing MORE oil at the same pressures Costs more energie to be put in to the machine so again, more Amps and KW's for the E-motor that drives the pump.
      Thats why some systems/pumps have variable flow so it can speed things up when there isnt much load on the system and when the load increases the flow gets less and less and the pressure builds up so you can have the best of both worlds.

    I've only ever cut down two trees totally by myself. From felling, to limbing, to logging (bucking?) and hauling it all off. But I had to move the trunks off my friend's lawn without murdering his grass & beautiful landscaping etc. So dragging them like you did was out of the question, plus my li'l old 38hp 2wd tractor hasn't got the cojones for it. So, Necessity, southern ingenuity & innovation kicked in, (even though I'm yokel from N.E. England) I made a few wraps around the trunk with a long chain hooked to my tractor. That thing rolled right out of there and didn't leave a mark. Now I have some beautiful White Oak for my woodworking projects, and a happy customer.
