    Hi everybody ! First of all a huge thank you to my now already 2000 subscribers ! I can't believe how fast this channel is growing. All I wanted to do was share a nice view from the flight deck, and from all the positive comments I can read, that only motivates me to make more and better footage each time. I still have some clips laying around, and I'm working on new views for future videos, stay tuned ! But first of all, enjoy this early morning departure from Nador ;)

    I have a few questions:
    1) Why was your FD off during climb? I mean there were no cross cues.
    2) why did you accelerte to 280ktn after passing FL100? Why didnt you set the climb speed that was calculated by FMC?
    3) what was the cost index? Did you have the same cost index when you came to GMMW?
    4) Is this a standard procedure to climb to FL 060 and then turn to ESAMI in Nador?
    Or just a regulation by ATC?
    5) how often do you have to switch between NG and Max Generation?
    Does it happen that you have to fly for example:
    Day1=NG Day2=Max Day3=NG ?
    5) can you please make longer vids?
    Thanks for answering

    • @pilotmax
      @pilotmax  Před 5 lety

      Hi.
      1) It was off because the captain wanted to fly manually.
      2) The FMC calculated speed was close to 280kts, and we had some turbulence expected during the climb, as you can see later in the video. 280kts is the best turbulence penetration speed, so we used 280kts for climb.
      3) That is company information and I will not publish this here ;)
      4) That was the clearance we got from ATC that day. I don't know if that's always the procedure but for us it was.
      5) We switch constantly from NG to MAX, it is completely mixed on our planning. It does also happen that a flight is changed last minute from NG to MAX or inversely.

  • @kola3758
    @kola3758 Před 5 lety

    Great video, subscribed.
    I have two questions:
    1) If you taxi on one engine, theoretically you would need to apply more thrust to that engine, as opposed to taxiing on very little thrust with both engines. How much of a saving is it to do a SETO? Also, can you feel a left yaw when taxiing?
    2) Why was the FO's Flight Director off? Is it a normal procedure?

    • @SB-kg2ik
      @SB-kg2ik Před 5 lety

      I saw the captain using the auto-throttle throughout, so any FD setting on Maxime's side must be fully coordinated or turned off, or the captain would have unexpected autothrottle system responses I suppose, Maxime ? (notice the PNF is very busy at this stage) It's similar in airbus aircraft, autotrust does not require anything else, basically you are flying the boeing equivalent of control wheel steering.

    beautiful video. two questions about single engine taxi;
    1. is there a time where you must turn on the other engine just to get it "warmed up"
    2. wouldn't you want to "test" the other engine that has been off and idled before taking off instead of going from off then 0 to take off thrust so quickly.

    • @pilotmax
      @pilotmax  Před 5 lety +1

      Thank you. Yes we need to warm up the engine before taking off. That is from 2 to 5 minutes depending if the engine is already hot or not (from a previous flight) or if we're flying the NG or MAX. We plan our SETO so that we will have enough warm up time before reaching the runway ready for departure. We do not "test" our engines, if they're both stable and warmed up, the take off spool up is the "test". We will immediately see if there's a problem or not.

    Bonjour Maxime, yet another great video! Question, at what altitude did you turn the A/P on? Seems to me that the captain was flying manually the entire length of the video with no flight directors. How can you fly so precisely for such a long time without deviating too significantly from the required course? When you crossed 6000ft and initiated a left turn direct to the waypoint, was the captain primarily looking at the Navigation Display to assess whether he was on the correct track? Thanks a lot!

    • @pilotmax
      @pilotmax  Před 5 lety

      Hello ! Thank you ;) The altitude depends on the situation, it's everyday different. Sometimes the weather is really bad of there is too much traffic and it's best to use the autopilot. But most of the time it's OK and we enjoy flying manually, some more than others. It depends on your colleague as well, both need to feel comfortable with the other flying manually. On average personally I engage the autopilot at around 15.000/20.000ft, after the acceleration is done and basically there is nothing else to do than fly in a straight line. That can be with or without flight directions. Same story for the approach ;)

    • @pilotmax
      @pilotmax  Před 5 lety

      Also yes he follows what's on the ND, or initially the runway heading, you can fly as precise by hand as the autopilot can ;)

    Interessante video!
    Ik vroeg me af waarom de isolation valve dicht moest blijven voordat de tweede engine was gestart?
    Edit: Ik zie overigens ook geen lnav of vnav staan in de PFD, en zie dat de de vlucht erg lang word handbestuurt. Mogen jullie zelf bepalen of jullie handvliegen of met de autopiloot vliegen?

    • @pilotmax
      @pilotmax  Před 5 lety

      De isolation was moet dicht staan zodat de bleed van de rechter engine niet terug naar de APU kan in het linker systeem. We zitten met een dual bleed configuration en dus moet de thrust in principe idle blijven. Maar met de isolation valve closed is de rechter motor geisoleerd van de APU en linker engine en kunnen we er dus mee taxiën.
      We mogen zelf bepalen of we manueel vliegen of met automatische piloot, behalve op RVSM levels (>FL290) waar AP mandatory is. Piloten vliegen heel graag manueel bij ons, we vliegen enorm veel visual approaches op onze bestemmingen, en we zijn daar ook enorm goed op getraind.

    • @leo9272
      @leo9272 Před 5 lety

      Bedankt voor je antwoord. Je antwoord heeft me heel erg aan het denken gezet. Na een halfuur denken heb ik nog een aantal follow up vragen.
      1. Is de engine bleed van 1 engine open gelaten omdat alleen APU bleed air niet genoeg zou zijn om alle systemen naar behoren te laten werken?
      2. Waarom is er APU bleed nodig? Waarom kan je in dit geval geen crossbleed start uitvoeren?

  • @fsfan73

    • @pilotmax
      @pilotmax  Před 5 lety

      Hi! The force varies according to various conditions, mostly speed of the aircraft. At low speeds it's light, but it gets really strong as you fly fast (I'd say 20-30kg force for full deflection).

  • @feizalderadjat
    @feizalderadjat Před 5 lety

    Helo, in the video you said a lot of fuel will be saved. But in my opinion there is a higher thrust in the other engine that needs higher fuel flow, is that correct?

    • @pilotmax
      @pilotmax  Před 5 lety

      You need a little bit more thrust on the live engine to start the taxi, but most of the taxi is done with the engine at idle, only giving a little bit of thrust when you want to accelerate. In average you will save fuel :)

      Yes you have full control of the airplane. If you push on the yoke to fly to the ground... you fly to the ground. It's exactly the same as if you would steer you car out of the road, there's no protection for that.

  • @rigor.m9422
    @rigor.m9422 Před 5 lety +5

    So, before takeoff, engine 2 would have been running for 7 min (or however long the taxi is) and engine 1 would be pretty much doing a cold start. Wouldn't that increase the probability of thrust instability on spool up because of the temp difference in the engines?

    • @SAB445
      @SAB445 Před 5 lety +2

      was thinking the same thing, full thrust from a cold engine..can't be that good for the engine i think

    • @pilotmax

      We need 5 minutes warm up time on both engines before we can go. That's the difficulty of the SETO, estimate when to start your engine so as to have these 5 minutes. If you look closely the video here was cut twice at 7:30 and 8:05. We had our 5 minutes before departure ;)

    Waarom hebben jullie voor een SETO gekozen boven een crossbleed start als je bij de SETO ook de kerozine gebruikende APU moet gebruiken en bij een crossbleed start dat niet hoeft?
    Kortom, waarom een SETO en geen crossbleed?

    • @SB-kg2ik
      @SB-kg2ik Před 5 lety

      My 2 cents: als het company policy is, en je moet de thrust rechts continu aanpassen, of toch in sommige plaatsen, hou de APU voor AIRCO en ELEC, in ieder geval is het aantal minuten APU ipv ENG 1 goedkoper in fuel. Anders is het niet meer standardiseerbaar volgens mij, maar kan me vergissen.

    • @leo9272
      @leo9272 Před 5 lety

      @@SB-kg2ik Bedankt voor je reactie. Nog wel een vraagje: Is engine bleed van 1 motor zonder de bleed van de APU te weinig voor een goed werkende airco of hydraulics? Ik zie eigenlijk geen andere reden om de APU aan te laten voor de start van ENG 1 dan zijn bleed.

    • @pilotmax
      @pilotmax  Před 5 lety +1

      Hallo. Een motor in idle verbruikt ongeveer 300kg/uur, de APU minder dan 100. Een crossbleed start is een veel moeilijkere procedure, je moet hiervoor stilstaan, met 2 werken, en approval krijgen van de ATC. Bij de SETO wordt de werkende engine gebruikt voor de airco en electriciteit, de APU wordt enkel gebruikt voor de bleed voor de 2de start.

    • @SB-kg2ik
      @SB-kg2ik Před 5 lety

      Because you are using Autothrottle, so it will interfere in the vertical modes if FD or AP is on. WX avoidance, superhigh FL clearance, why use FD ? The PFD is full of the necessary information in my humble opinion.

    when do you use this technique?
    Only on taxi out?

    • @piotrkuler2474
      @piotrkuler2474 Před 5 lety

      Fluppi long taxi, prefereblly no many turns, downhill, 5 mins of warm up. I think it has to be carefully planned.

    • @pilotmax
      @pilotmax  Před 5 lety +1

      We try to use this procedure on each flight, except when, as Piotr said, there are significant uphills, tight turns, there is not enough time for the second engine to warm up (5min) or the airport is complicated, or bad weather and we need to be both concentrated on the outside. We also do SETI (single engine taxi in) after landing where we shut down an engine as we are still taxiing to the gate.

  • @mehdi516
    @mehdi516 Před 5 lety

    Hi Maxime. Yours videos are just awesome. But I have a question: if you're taxiing just with the engine 2, the plane is going to go (normally) on the left and not straight. So, how do you correct that ?
    Thank you

    • @pilotmax
      @pilotmax  Před 5 lety +2

      Thank you. The plane will indeed tend to turn slightly to the left during taxi (depending on thrust of the engine 2), you correct that by keeping a slight pressure on the steering wheel to the right during the taxi.

      @pilotmax  Před 5 lety +2

      Not a dumb question. It does affect a little bit. Depending on the thrust on the right engine, the airplane tends to steer to the left more or less. You just have to compensate on the steering.

    Boeing recommends 2 minute engine warm up before take-off, you shouldn't have used single engine taxi out in a such a small airport with a short taxi.

    • @pilotmax
      @pilotmax  Před 3 lety +1

      We always comply with the 2 minutes engine warm up ;) (or 5 minutes if cold engine) even on this airport. We had the whole backtrack to do, so there was plenty of time ;)

  • @ChrisComley
    @ChrisComley Před 5 lety

    IF you do this a lot, do you sometimes use the other engine to try and keep the total hours approximately the same? If not, doesn't that cause maintenance issues when #2 runs up lots more hours than #1?

    • @pilotmax
      @pilotmax  Před 5 lety

      Starting number 2 first is mandatory for SETO, because of the bleed configuration. The difference in time is not an issue. I once flew with an "old" engine on the right and a brand new engine on the left, there are some differences in fuel flow and temperature, but the thrust is symmetrical. The maintenance is done separately on each engine.

      @@pilotmax And for SETI, can you use one or the other independently or is it still Eng #2 ? Is this still true on a 737 Max ? On A320, the procedure is to always keep Eng 1 for hydraulic system (normal brakes + steering wheels) and not use its PTU. I want to know if there is such a thing like that on B737. Someone told me that you choose the engine regarding the taxiways configuration on each airports... is that true ? Thanks.

    • @pilotmax
      @pilotmax  Před 5 lety +1

      No the procedure only allows to start engine number 2 first. That's because of the design of the bleed system. When engine 2 runs, it can provide air to its onside pack, the APU is supplying bleed on the left side of the system for engine 1 start.
