    I used to hate Leno, as I get older (I'm 26 now) I have grown to love him, his demeanor and enthusiasm, and his corny jokes. Really, he is everything you could want from someone with his age and experience, and very few car reviewers seem as genuine as him. His experiences are HIS experiences, and anecdotal as they are, they are exactly what the industry needs. keep it up Jay!

    When Jay did his goodbye on "The Tonight Show" he impressed me the most when his reference to his legacy. He showed all the people who were part of the show and their families, especially the children and he also said, " I am leaving the dance with the same girl I came with" or something to that effect. It could be that he pays attention to little details, like " if your going to have a pantie in the trunk of the GT make sure it is your wife's or you will loose half the car", :) . But comedy aside, he is a thoughtful, down to earth, man who has a brilliant clarity of thought and love's America and is proud of what America has done and what she is capable of. I see him finding joy where you can get it, like the smile you see on his face when he is driving his Miata or his Ford GT, "That won Le Mans" shows me happiness comes from with in.

      There's a guy somewhere around Maryland that has an 05 Ford GT with 4(FOUR!) miles on the odometer and it honestly makes me kind of sad. I mean it's their money and they can do what they want, but that's a machine that was built for a purpose that it has yet to be able to do. The only miles on the thing are from rolling it on and off the trailer.

  • @supra1jzed
    @supra1jzed Před rokem +7

    The aero engineering behind that car will probably be my favorite until the day I die. Also it's "story". Ford did this out of left field for the 50th anniversary of winning LeMans "just to show them we still can". This car not only cuts through the air unbelievably good (notice it's main body is shaped no different than land speed record cars), it's design allows the car to gain exceptional speed in a draft. After it makes it's pass, it doesn't return the tow to the car now behind. This car functions more like trying to draft 3 motorcycles. It dumps a LOAD of the air it goes through directly behind it into the face of the car behind. It's truly brilliant. Another neat fact about it, it's foot print is as large as it gets because it was too slippery. They still needed to achieve some downforce so they made the surface area of the car bigger to allow the rake of the car to still have enough there to give it downforce. Race cars generate downforce two ways (from GT cars to prototypes). First are aero packages. Splitters, dive planes, gurneys, wings, etc. The next way is the rake of the car (nose height in relation to tail height).
    Edit just to add a little more: While they could have kept the smaller footprint and increased the rake even more, that's dangerous. Rake doesn't just affect downforce. It primarily affects weight balance on each axle. If you rake the hell out of a car, it will be exceptionally "twitchy". Too much weight forward will make for a very unstable car, especially under braking at turn in. It's all about balance.

The irony is they appear identical to knobs in my 1976 240 D. Jay could have obtained them from an import salvage yard much cheaper I'm sure but having bought a high end printer why not use it to create a solution? Say what you want about Jay as a Talk Show Host, but he is definitely a cool guy and is surprisingly easy to talk to. Used to see him around Burbank all the time when he was doing the Tonight Show. Always driving something different, of course... I once saw him pull out of NBC in a Corvette, and decided to rag on him at the stoplight about the Vette not being exotic enough. I was in an SUV, and most celebrities would just look the other way and then scoot when the light turned green. Not Jay. He leans over and rolls down the window and had me repeat my taunt.
    When I told him I didn't think a Corvette was up to his standards, he launched into an excited little description about the car and its "carbon fiber front-end" and etc., etc.
    Then, he asks me if I would like a pizza. He was taking a couple of them home from work and handed me one out the window: "It's good pizza", he says! Then he gets his left turn arrow and off he goes, up Buena Vista, toward his garage at Burbank Airport. I immediately went down the street to the stables where I kept my horse and tried to see if anyone could guess where I got the pizza I was sharing with them!

      Here''s another for you - I am one of the only people that has seen Jay ride a horse! He was doing 'promo spots' for his new 10 o'clock show and went around our neighborhood (it was a setup, of course) knocking on doors to ask what he could do to help people get ready to watch his new show. My neighbor had him clean out her horse's stall and then let Jay ride the horse down the street on camera. It was done at 10 p.m., and Jay had a small crew of camera/sound/Producer, the horse owner, and two of us neighbors there to witness it.

    You obviously are a great driver, but an even better salesman. We can trust you...and you tell a wonderful story! It is a great car and looks like it, and maybe the best of its kind, which is saying a lot. I ask, why did 1,500 people who bothered to invest 37 minutes in watching it, give it a thumbs down? What is not to like? These folks must've woke up in a poopy mood. What did they think that this was going to be like? This car literally honks! Owning this car is one of the perks of being wealthy. I liked it, Jay.

      kraenk12 - That "old Aston" has a factory backed race team this season for the first time years. Calling it an "old Aston" is completely neglecting the substantial amount of financial backing this team had & the substantial developmental resources that it had received that it didn't previously. If you understand how 'Balance of Performance' is applied, you'll understand how this came to be an unforeseen advantage in the performance balance of each car(suffice to say, they take into account the model's previous historical race performance).
      Also, just like the Corvette(which has no problem maintaining pace, despite its relative age), the Vantage GTE went through significant upgrades & improvements as a result of the major regulation changes that occurred at the end of the 2015 season/the following off-season. And, given that cars are balanced to each other by the sanctioning body, age doesn't make a whole hell of a lot of difference if the base was good to begin with.

      The Mclaren F1 wasn't an LMP car either, and it won outright. Also, I would hope to god that you win Le Mans with all the financial backing of one of the largest Automakers in the world. It's why Audi/ Porsche have dominated for the past 2 decades. My cynical side tells me that Ford only wanted to win Le Mans for the publicity and marketing of the GT.

    Wonderful episode, Jay! Interesting thing about engines- the thing does not to be 'exotic' to have won an incredibly tough race. That the engine may have (probably loosely) been based on a truck engine and got parts out of the 'Ford parts bin' is a total stick in the eye of the Paganis, the Ferraris, the McLarens. Very American. Freakin' amazing. Love it.

Forget the cars, take away the money, all that. I relaxed watching this. A huge thing. Like guys relax talking to their friends about cars or bikes or boats or carpentry. The conversation was familiar, a conversation I've had with friends on many topics. Even though I wasn't doing any of the talking, I didn't need to, I got everything Jay said. I got it.
