One of the greatest athletes in American sports history. Don’t let his 24 years of playing fool you that he lost roughly 2 seasons because he was drafted to fight in the Korean War. He truly was an American hero. Rest in peace Willie. ❤
He played 22 years, but made 24 All-Star teams because they played multiple games a couple of times.
He might be the all time home run leader if he didn’t lose those two seasons
Well said
The greatest player in baseball history. Just imagine in a smaller park & no service
Windy candle stick! Means that when you're talented you can play in any park !
Now Ms Payson can have Willie for ever in her team
Rest in peace Willie. Your love for the game, your incredible talent, and your passion for life will be greatly missed.
His lasting impact is one cannot say “ Willie Mays” without smiling! Name another historical character that you can say without smiling?”
Rest in peace to the best player in the MLB history he will be missed dearly and deepest condolences to his family and friends.
Albert Pujols is the best player in the MLB History
Him and Bonds the reason I’m a Giants Fan rest easy Goat
1954 the greatest catch ever. 1961 he hits 4 homers in one game. Jon Miller (the Mark Twain of baseball) has the best memorial
Rest in power Willie. Thank you for your contribution to the game. Nobody will ever do as much for it as you did.
24 All-Star appearances is incredible.
I’ll always have an affinity for the old NY Giants cap. NY gave me my Giants and Willie Mays. For that, I’m forever grateful.
My hero, the reason why I am a Giants fan for life. Thanks for showing a kid from the bay how ball is meant to be played.
One of if not the best MLB players of all time. Fly high and never forget him. Love for Mr. Willie ⬇️
Statistically Willie Mays is the best, as stated. It's why MLB named the MVP award for him.
Willie Mays one of the greatest ball player there was I grew up watching him play He was great very sad day today
Thank You MLB for the best tribute by far to our greatest baseball player Willie Mays.
He was great on the field and off, inspiring millions around the world. He was humble about it, saying he was doing the best he could same as everyone else. They all make baseball great.
Say Hey!
The last living legend
Truly a legend.
If Mays hadn’t lost two years in the service he very well could’ve topped Ruth’s record.
OR. had he started out in MLB and not the negro league he could have passed Ruth's record.
😢 fly high Willy mazs 🪽🪽🪽🕊️🕊️🕊️🕊️🕊️🕊️🕊️🦢
What more could he have accomplished if he did not have to serve his country for 2 years. Thanks for the memories sir. 🥰
Willie was definitely a bright ball player, thank you sir.
Great player and person..
We have lost one of the true greats of the game. Willie was the last of the great guard of Mickey, Hank, Clemente, Jackie and so many more. Rest in peace Mr. Mays, hope you are enjoying yourself playing ball up there. Thoughts and prayers for his family and friends. He truly touched our hearts and there will never be another like him. For the younger generation, I encourage you to research this legend.
He actually perfected the basket catch in the army
May Willie Mays rest in peace, and may all of his family, friends, and fans be healed and comforted.
Rest easy Mr Mays!!!
❤❤AMEN❤❤
Descansa en Paz Willie Mays
Uno de los mejores de todo los tiempos
Mays was a preview of the baseball stars, which would follow over the decades.
🙌 De las últimas leyendas del béisbol.
メジャーリーグに詳しくない私でも、彼の偉大さを存じています。走攻守の全てが超一流の伝説的選手でしたね。
my very first baseball game at the 'stick in the 60s had Mays, McCovey, Marichal and Bonds in the lineup that day. fast forward to the 90s when i take my gf to a game. after the game we are standing next to Willie's statue in front of the ball park when i see Willie standing inside a door inside the stadium. i grab my gf and turn her around to look. she starts screaming and crying. i'm sure it made Willie's night. 😢 R.I.P. Willie
Willie Mays played in Puerto Rico when that winter league was king in the 1950s. Many great major leaguers played in San Juan, Santurce, Caguas, or Ponce and Mayaguez- the great cities Puerto Rico.
2 prime years he could have easily had 740+
Rest in peace living legend 🙏
😢 miss you kid
Was a living legend- he got to see his giants team turn into the Rockies
An amazing man
Ode to Sir Willie Mays spelling out his name:
"Willie Mays, SIR to all of us.
I, like many looked up to you with pride.
Love you immensely for the road you paved for us of a brown hue.
Lasting memories are going to be our tapestry of you.
"I so admire Sir Mays" are utterances in many a head now and beyond.
Excellence in being is what you are with a resounding AMEN.
May your family turn to god for inner strength.
Anything is possible as God has shown you.
Your breath of sustainable achievements will be forever lasting.
So Sir, I write this to bid you farewell to enjoy eternal rest."
My prayers are with his family
His catch at the 7:45 mark is incredible.
Yo, MLB, why so many errors in the transcription for the subtitles? Spend a few minutes cleaning that up before you post it. Everything else about your production is stellar - don't let a buggy AI bring you down.
So sad 😞
Had Willie not been drafted into the army for 2 years when his career was really taking off, he would have broken Babe Ruth's home run record before Hank Aaron did. He would have.
Audio clip @ 1:07 is Mets Lindsey Nelson during Willie's first game in NY 5/72.
Goofy Gi-ants fans couldn't touch what Willie and the team had in aNY.
Does anybody have more footage from his night at Shea in '73?
Minneapolis Millers. Along with Ted Williams.
Did Willie wear a helmet? Did Willie Mays wear elbow pads? Did he wear ankle pads? Did he take a day off in the day because he played a night game the day before?
Who could leave him off their HoF ballot? Absurd.
:(
EPD
Ok Willie Mays based off the photos does kinda look like EDP although not too similar but probably one of those things were 2 people who are known pretty well look alike
first and this is sad 😔
Tell me about it.
Nothing special everybody sooner or later go the same way
If Willie hadn't lost two seasons to military service and having to hit in Candlestick park he might have challenged the Babes HR record. Would his popularity have spared him the harassment that Henry had to endure .
