I'm actually impressed by this episode because I get to see a female version of Captain Planet named Planetina and the only superhero adventure Rick hasn't ruined yet.
I was expecting a funny twist, not a serious episode focusing of their relationships. But it was a really cool change of pace!

I know Morty isn't really an innocent bird, but some say Morty is being a hypocrite in this one. I think he has encountered really sick and violent people that led him to act like Rick to survive + that time he got drunk with power because of that time-crystal thing. Deep inside he wants a peaceful life and maybe some fantasy along the way, that's always been his deal, remember the morty-adventures? helping a village in need, joining the Vindicators to fight evil, getting his own dragon. He probably wanted his relationship with Planetina to be just like that, peaceful with heart-warming adventures but realized she was just like Rick describes the world to him.

Imagine if she got with Mr. Nimbus, and they'd take down the whole family together.
I think as people grow more powerful so does the evil in their hearts. Planetina always had the idea of destroying mankind, it's not until Morty killed her controllers that she was free enough to actually do it.
She the only hero in this show as far as I'm concerned because she's the only one who has any actually justifiable motivations for their actions. She's got better ground to stand on than morty in episode 1 of this season and id argue she was even more justified than morty was killing her controllers.

I was thinking Rick was gonna have to take her down at the end of the episode after going supervillain. SuperNova is still out there as well from the Vindicators, maybe we get a battle between them. Idk if they ever plan to use Abradolf Lincler again. I hope to see him come back someday.

I loved the change of pace with this episode, Morty's plotline was so serious and it was an amazing curveball for the story and its my favorite episode of the season yet and probs in my top 10 for the entire show. I loved it.
And with Alison Brie as Planetina we are now only 4 cast members away from getting the entire main cast of Community as guest stars on Rick and Morty!!!
Also this might’ve been the most heartfelt episode of the entire show. But at the same time with Morty and Summer’s stories the ending moral is love isn’t real, we all die alone, and nothing matters at all.

This episode was painful because every time I see Morty happy I know something is going to come along to ruin it
Bro same, right as they started dating I knew something bad was going to happen. But damn just because it was expected doesn't make it less painful!
As Mortys drift away from their Ricks they because progressively more badass. We've already seen this taken to it's worst extreme in Evil Morty. As they say, Mortys are meant to be sidekicks. Without a side to kick, they just start kicking.
Morty: Feels devastated that his girlfriend is killing dozens of people.
Also Morty: Literally killed the people holding her hostage & an entire family 2 episodes ago just to get some wine.
Also Morty: A kid who wants someone that is remotely sane in order to live peacefully.
Honestly, He can't catch a break.
It's just that he'd hoped she was more pure than himself. It's all he wanted from her. And she was broken down by being set free from human restraints in a cruel, human battered world. He can handle that just fine, but her...It was too much for him to watch.
To be fair the people holding her hostage were, well, holding her hostage.
Tbose two things are not moral equivalents. Morty's life was being theeatened, and theg were going to sell her into slavery if he did nothing about it. Meanwhile, Planetina just straight up commits premeditated murder. Sure, he's killed people, but not just random innocent people. The only guy he's ever actually killed as a crime of passion was that cat person in the lighthouse in the purge episode. At most, he's guilty of manslaughter. Every other being he has ever killed have been trying to murder him. Self defense akd killing people in an act of murder like Planetina did are totally different things. Morty isn't innocent-minded, but she very clearly crossed a line Morty actually has a conscience about not crossing.
In both of those situations morty's life was threatened. Not the same thing.
This is probably one of my favorites episodes by FAR

Shes the best character this show has ever had, she has to comeback, shes the perfect window for the main protagonists to look at their own actions. Rick and Morty have killed even more people than her for worse reasons, like Rick potion number 9, so with Morty so appalled by her, it could make for a great opportunity for him to reflect over his own actions

@@Optimus-ti8er It's not the sad ending for me, it's everything before it. Firstly, it just wasn't funny for me. I know that's subjective, but I honestly found this one of the least funny episodes they've done, and since this is primarily a comedy show, that's a big letdown. The B story was one of the least interesting/funny stories they've done and felt like it went nowhere. Plus it tonally did not match the A story at all, so I felt there was a real disconnect there.
As for the romance plotline, it felt suuuuuuuuper rushed and half baked to me. Her turn to the dark side happened in a 30 sec montage with no build up. Plus the whole "Captain Planet hates humans" joke has been done many many times. Robot Chicken has done it twice, the channel "Funny or Die" did it with Don Cheadle, etc. So that twist was obvious a mile away and did not have any impact. Plus I don't buy Morty's character in this episode at all and felt like they were backpedalling earlier plotlines. For instance, he breaks up with her for killing innocent people. Okay, that feels like something season 1 Morty would do, but by season five we've seen Morty mass murder soooo many people that its kind've unbelievable that he's literally crying over some randos. Hell, in this very season, he committed genocide over some wine. During the purge episode in season two and the face-hugger episode in season 4, he actively displayed enjoyment at killing people. Plus he hangs around with the biggest mass murderer of the universe, Rick. Honestly, the sad ending didn't feel earned.
Finally (sorry for ranting here) I have this ongoing frustration at the writers of this show as they can't seem to decide whether we the audience should care about these characters or not. There are episodes like the Train episode that make fun of the fans' obsession with the lore and caring about the character's arcs, and then there are episodes like this where I'm supposed to suddenly give a shit if Morty is heartbroken. They can't seem to make up their minds if this is just an episodic comedy show, like Family Guy or South Park, where the stakes rarely matter and its all for laughs, or whether they want people to be invested in what actually happens to these characters in the long term.
At the end of episode two, Rick said "and we even ran into space Beth" which would require that they had separated for some time after their first encounter.
Also one decoy said the decoys go on terrestrial adventures, and the episode one Rick and Morty were in some space portal at the start.
So definitely not straight from season finale to episode twos end.

Also. Progressively, even though Morty doesn’t get a happy ending. He’s excelling while Rick is lowering. There might be a sign of an Evil Morty type episode this season maybe more background. Idk. This episode, Morty didn’t use Rick’s help or technology at all. Just himself and the enemies’ rings.

If you notice on the decoy episode, the first family started with the idea of killing God. And then the last decoys refer to themselves as smartest man in the universe, then the last one is the one that refers to himself as a God. Being the last one, most likely the ones made by the original as Rick thinks of himself as a God but also above them

Not trying to ruin the fun here but how old is Planetina supposed to be? It was made clear many times that Morty is 14...
Depends how much time she spends manifested. Presumably not more than 50% of the time otherwise I don't think we'd ever see her get manifested she would just always be around but we see the "kids" summon her out of their ring at the show.. So she's at least 13, not likely she's in her 20's.

What I like about this episode is how Morty genuinely love Planetina and how Planetina also genuinely love Morty back.
Just like with the Glasses Girl in Season 4 Episode 8, but only this time nobody messed up and ruined their relationship except for their difference in how they view lives.
Morty, even though we already know that he have already killed a lot of lives, is still against to killing innocent peoples. While on the other hand, Planetina can only see those people as the cause of pollution, which is at odds with her purpose of saving the environment.

Remember the episode with the wine and there was a quote from that animal guy from the portal who morty asked to help carry the whine back to morty world. He's said something like "you'll find someone whos right for you and loves you for you" well Planetinas that someone.

This shows the differece of how Rick and Morty handles their situation in face of breaking up.
When Morty love someone, the girl loves him back. Making it really difficult for Morty when they split up or leaves him behind.
But when Rick love someone, he already knows that the girl might not love him back. That's why he's already accustomed to the situation when he's being left behind. He then just moves on like nothing happened even if it really hurts him inside.

I used to love watching Captain Planet as a kid, so definitely loved this episode! I can't remember all the names and actors from the original series but do remember LeVar Burton (Geordi LaForge from Star Trek The Next Generation) was the voice of Kwame, the black character. He also narrated the intro. Obviously, he wasn't in this though.
In the last episode one of the decoy Rick's said that the decoys purpose was to go on self contained terrestrial adventures. So I think the family at the end is definitely our smith family, (or smith family prime, if you will) based in the fact that they were having an extra-terrestrial adventure
