    Hey @NetworkChuck I been watching your subnetting videos, now I finally know what the subnet mask is for! ... now this may be an idea for a follow up video, but how do you physically implement this? can it be done with a home router? I mainly want to fix my network, isolate iot, but also be able to see it from the main network and I have a few spare routers. I also seen your videos explaining vlans, but unfortunatly my router does not support it and since I live in Argentina, routers that do support it are to expensive for a home network. (Btw I tried using the guest network but the problem is, if that for some devices they need to see each other, otherwise the latency is noticable if they do so over the internet, and if I allow intranet access this means security is gone).
    Thanks!

    • @JJFlores197
      @JJFlores197 Před 11 měsíci +1

      The problem is that it varies greatly depending on the router you have. Typical home routers are somewhat limited when it comes to advanced networking features. They may have some of the features, but their implementation may be limited or not very good. See if you can install a 3rd party firmware like DD-WRT or Tomato or similar. That will let you have much more functionality compared to the stock firmware. These projects have many different brands and models they support, so chances are somewhat decent that your router will work. However, doing this does come with an inherent risk of damaging the router if the flashing goes wrong.
      Its impossible to give an exact guide that works for every single router in the world, because as I said, different manufacturers do things differently. Some routers may not support most of these features.

  • @OhhCrapGuy

    You can shortcut this a bit if you're if octet notation by subtracting the first non-255 octet from 256 to get the network size.
    256-240=16
    So the subnets are 16.256 in size, ranging from 0.0-15.255, 16.0-31.255, etc.

    subnetting, building small networks from a big address range (i.e. /8 or /16 networks)

    I have a question, lets say our network is 10.0.0.1. And I go through the steps of subnetting and what if had to make more networks but the final number went beyond 255, would we just change it to 10.0.1.1 and continue the same pattern of increasing?

    @NetworkChuck Hi, I installed the Virtual Box and Kali Linux witch the 64 Bit Version. How can delete everything so that my ram is fully used by windows and my Cpus and everything else?

      That makes no sense dude. If your virtual machine is powered off, it isn't using any resources other than storage. Its just like a real computer. If the computer is off, it isn't using CPU or RAM.
