If you want to find those killer tones then follow this simple method and eventually you will find your own unique sound.
You to can find the guitar amp settings for the tone or tones you want.
It takes time and a little bit of hunting around at first but once you see how to do it.
You can make a note of the settings you like for the future.
This is a very important step so make sure you write it down somewhere.
Time spent learning how to do this now will save you many hours later.
We start by finding the clean tone so you know your base line and what the guitar sounds like with no distortion or reverb and then we go on to find the tones that you want for the songs that you want to play and eventually your own sound.
The HB-20R has a spring reverb which gives an incredible amount of options when playing. You can make it sound like you are in a huge hall or a church. It's a very impressive feature of this amp.
In this video we look for the progressive rock tone and sound of David Gilmour's iconic 4 note guitar phrase on the track Shine on you crazy diamonds.
It takes some time to find those tones so you have to give yourself enough time to find the tones you need to play a particular tune.
Using the added functionality of the tone controls on your guitar will greatly increase your options.

Overdrive on
Gain set to 2
Master volume set to 5
Treble set to 7
Middle 5
Bass set to 2
Reverb set to 6
Set the guitar tone control switch to the treble position and turn up both volume controls to 10 with a slight touch of tone on the neck pickup if you are playing a twin humbucker guitar.
This is the way we dial into the electric guitar tones that you want from the amplifier.
Whether you want to play Metal, Rock, Blues or Jazz you can start from the clean tone amp settings and adjust to what you need.
Have fun and keep practicing.

This the best video for setting up a practice amp I've seen on CZcams. Spot on. I wish my guitar Teachers taught me all this when I was a teenager 30 years ago😆 I had to figure it out for myself. But that's half the fun. I'm looking at buying one of these second hand. This video helped me make up my mind. With a bit of knob twiddlling I can know I can get a good sound out of it. Cheers.
@@NoelWesley Hi Noel and thank you for your warm comments. The hb20 r is a great amp combo for not a lot of money.
It’s great fun finding your own tone and it’s the best way to learn how to use any amp.
As you know the speaker is the biggest factor in creating tone’s and this amp does a great job.
Second hand speakers are just as good as new ones. Some people like the sound of a speaker once it’s been used for a while too. Worn in so to speak.
I’m not sure if it’s a thing or not but some people seem to prefer the worn in sound?
What are your thoughts on this?
The connection options on the combo are unique for the price range. The control options are also very varied and the sound is great. The design is very classy. I think this combo is really great. Many of my guitar students bought it on my recommendation and think it's great and are 100% satisfied with the combo.
Hi Floyd thank you for dropping in. The HB-20R amp is a remarkable piece of kit. Hard to beat on price.
Great options for a range of tones.
Your students have everything they need with this amp. 🎶🎸👌👍
Interesting, useful and clear…now to learn them…thanks Michael…and good to learn about not pressing too hard and why and more about frets…all a new language
@@cassandragaisford2777 It's a steep slope at first glance but you will find that the more you play the easier it gets...until you reach the plateau lol.
Don't worry about the plateau it's just letting you know that you are in fact improving fast. 🎶🎸👍🏼
@@molometer thank you…little by little
Thank you very much! Always tried to figure out my amp on my own and never really succeeded! Your video helped me greatly! :)
Hi Liv, my pleasure. It's good to hear that the video helped you get a handle on setting up your amp. I hope you find the tones you seek. Thank you for leaving your warm comment. It is much appreciated.
Some great tips. Everybody always thinks they need specific gear to get the tone that they want...I've always been one to think that the best gear is your EARS. You can tweak EQ, etc with what you have. I have tube amps, Helix, and more; but if I wanted to, I could get whatever I want from my early 90's Peavey Bandit (solid state, $150). BTW, if you come across a 90's Bandit (especially the "red stripe" ones) buy it!
Thanks for dropping in and I totally agree. All we need are our ears and a bit of patience and you can find the tone you want.
Tube amps are brilliant and I've used a few.
I'll keep an ear out for a red stripe amp. Thanks for the heads up. 👍🎸😋
The physics of sound is an interesting topic, quite eye-opening. I urge all to read up on it.
Yes indeed Gary, sound is a fascinating topic well worth investigating thoroughly. A key skill to develop is listening to the world around us. It can be a constant source of inspiration. 🎶🎸👍🏼
Thanks for the tips! You were the first one to tell me my amplifier shouldn't be on the ground!
Hi Jakke and thanks for leaving your comments.
It's very gratifying to hear that it helped you.
I'm actually setting up the hb-20r amp right now to record. How cool is that? 🎸😋👍
@@molometer You rock man! Hope to be as good as you one day... I just started learning Parklife from Blur.
@@jakkedesmet4408 Brilliant it's a great song. Are you going to upload it? 🎸😋👍
@@molometer Nahhh I'm not that good yet..
Thank you for the video! I just got this amp and have been playing around with the sound settings a bit but this helped me find the sound I wanted :)
Hi Riku, glad you found it helpful 👍🏼 it's a great amp. Enjoy 👍🏼🎶🎸
great video, I'm getting that amp and you played exactly the type of music I'm gonna play on it. thank you :)
My pleasure Ergo, it's a great little amp with a wide range of options.
I hope you have as much fun with it as I do.
I've had a few amps over the years and this one is built really well with that 8 inch speaker it pumps out plenty of volume. 🎼🎸👍
@@molometer That's good to know!
Thank you. This is an amazing wealth of knowledge.
Thanks glad you found it helpful 👍🎶🎸
Great tips! Thanks! Also must cut through the mix when playing with a band. Mids are very important to get a fat clear tone, a lot of ppl cut the mids and put too much gain which lends to a tonal fizziness.. might sound good at home practice but in a band set will sound really bad..
Hi Ricardo and thank you for your comments.
You are absolutely right about the mids. Without them we may get lost in the mix especially in a band setup.
Many people think that they just have to crank up the volume to be heard but as we know it's the tonal quality that separates the various instruments.
Glad you found this helpful. 🎼🎶🎸👍
This is turning out to be an interesting day. 👆😀
You're quite ambitious if you want to get close to Shine On tone with that gear! Very well done! 👍
Thank you jj, it really needs a delay pedal in the chain but you can get close to Gilmour's tone with perseverance and a bit of time. 🎶🎸👨💻👍🏼
Thank you for the help. Could you sometime help me with getting the bohemian rhapsody first solo tone? I cant reqlly get the correct note..
@@pachigaming825 thanks for the great question unfortunately I am on holiday in France/Italy for the next 8 weeks and haven't brought any gear with me. I'm hoping to check out some European guitar shops.
As far as the right tone for bohemian rhapsody goes there are some points that you should consider.
What effects are used by Brian May second and probably more importantly. What speakers was he using?
The speaker is the most important element in the signal chain.
What are you using at the moment?
If you are using a DAW it should be quite easy to dial in the right tones.
Let me know how you get on.
Brian in the early days made his own guitar and amp so maybe think about it that way. Use what you have.
You may discover a new interesting tonality all of your own.
I realize this was 4 years ago but it is one of the most bizarre guitar amp lessons on the tube. Why do you dislike treble?
Bizarrely the amp is still working perfectly 4 years laterl.
Treble has it's place but heavy gain is often used by some guitarists to hide their bad guitar playing or technique.
Gain to the edge of breakup is okay but beyond that it's just noise.
Your are playing a part of the song..shine on u crazy diamond..david...oh how many times i listened to this..when i was young...thank u for learning the tips..👌👍🙏❤
It's one of my favorite tracks off of a great album and it's a great piece to learn to play on the guitar.
Glad you enjoyed it. 😂😂🎸👍
great video!
Thanks Renato, glad you enjoyed it 🎶🎸💯👍🏼
Thank you the best
Thanks 👍🏼
what a great video, left a like for you
Thanks, glad you enjoyed watching the video. 👍
Thank you!!! Lots of necessary info, I bought a Les Paul guitar four months ago and I have played it connected to my computer speakers... Not good. Time to buy an amp, I guess. Stay safe and happy. Warm greetings from Greece.
Hello Joanna good to hear you are having fun with the guitar.
Yes the computer speakers are not the greatest in the world for playing through.
You will really notice the difference when you use an amp. Good luck and let me know how it goes. 👏🎼🎶🎸👍
Nice and usefull Video, thank you :)
Glad it was helpful!
Just got mine yesterday and it sadly wont go live from standby when striking a note, have to have the guitar conected and then turn it off and on to get it live, and even after that it goes to standby at random by itself mid playing, sadly i read somewhere online a dude had the same problem and he fixed it by taking it to a repair guy and getting some wires soldered
If it's new it's still under warranty. I'd send it back rather than mess around with it.
does anyone know how to use it as a speaker? I connected the jack to all 3 theoutputs and its still not working...
What are you trying to plug into it?
Great video! I‘m using the HB 20 R amp, do you know which settings I have to use to get an AC/DC Back in black sound?
No idea. Try the method in the video. It will help 👍
@@molometer I have a few settings that get pretty near to the original sound now, thank you for your answer :)
Well done Buster, the more you play around with the settings the more you will get to the sound that you want. Good to hear you are getting there already 👍🎸
Can it use pedals?
@@DiavoloDoppio27 Yeah you can. Just plug the output from the pedal into the amp.👍
@@molometer thanks man, also why do you dislike treble?
@@DiavoloDoppio27 personal choice you know it’s a thing 😂😂👍
so useful tips , here is new friend
Thank you Nika, glad you liked it.
Отец, ты лучший, твой обзор реально очень хороший и подробный.
Is this Finnish? Google translate can't read it?
@@molometer It's in fact Russian instead! My source being that I'm Finnish and we don't use cyrillic letters.
O I see. Thanks for the information 👍🏼
i am looking for a metal tone/sound. would you recommend this amp for this?
This amp has an overdrive channel which will give you a metal tone/sound.
Crank up the bass and treble for some extra distortion. 🎼🎶🎸👍
Can you also plug a bass in this amp? Im thinking about buying a bass and i already have this amp
Hi Lieve, you can use it with any instrument, bass, keyboard, microphones etc
Go for it. 🎶🎸😋👍
@@molometer Thanks!!
The light on my amp doesn't turn red while my guitar is plugged in and I can't here my guitar. Can someone help me?
Hi Briek, have you tried another guitar or microphone in the amp?
@@molometer No, i got this amp and guitar only one day because i'm a beginner.
@@briekleupe6225 It may be the guitar lead? It's difficult to know without seeing it.
Are you hearing anything without the guitar plugged in when you turn it on with the volume turned up to full?
@@molometer I solved the problem by jiggling a bit with the lead so it worked again. Thanks for answering!!
Hello i have the same problem could you explain to me how you solved it that would be great
Is this Amp solid state or modelling?
Hi Scarrus, it's a solid state amp with an old school metal spring reverb. Very effective. 🎼🎶🎸👍
@@molometer Spring Reverb is nice! I'm thinking about buying this as a second amp for my apartment and use it with some pedals for Metal.
Thanks for the reply!
Sounds like a good idea it's cheap as chips and built solid.
This is a pretty loud amp with 20 watts of power.
I use a mooer ge100 with mine and it works a treat. 🎼🎶🎸👍
I want to play Scorpions wind of change ,can someone tell me the sertings on this amp?
You can try these settings with Gain at 4 and reverb at 5. Listening to Wind of change. It sounds to me like they are using a flanger and delay pedal. You could get that sound by using the Cakewalk DAW. 😉
My light is always red?
At least you know it's on! 😂👍
Hello! For me the light stays red and I can't hear anything... it's my first amp and guitar, if someone could help...
Hi J, sorry to hear you are having difficulties. I assume you have the volume and eq's (bass middle and treble) all turned up?
Is the guitar lead cable wiring OK?
@@molometer they are turned up to 12 o'clock, and the wire seems okay to me, it's also brand new. I tried another cable but the problem was the same.
@@marie-lk8tg Seems like you may have a defective amp there.
The only other thing I can suggest is to return it?
It's tricky trying to figure out the problem without seeing it in person and I wouldn't recommend trying to fix it yourself. Let me know how you get on. 👍
@@molometer Sure thing, thank you so so much for your help! Have a good evening :)
@@molometer Hello again! Just letting you know that a friend of mine helped me solve the problem, it's now all working. Again, thank you for your help !😀
I just got this one and it keeps making a buzzy/fuzzy sound and when I plug/unplug the cable it makes a loud pop sound:( anyone know why that is?
That's just amps in general. Most buzz a little. The pop is also normal. Try turning the volume down to zero. 🎶🎸👍
@@molometer okay thankyou!!
Hi Yezda, Sorry I meant to say. Turn the amp volume down when plugging the guitar in. That will eliminate the pops and crackles.
What pickups are in your guitar?
Single coils for example have a 60mhz humm.
Humbuckers are quieter.
Have fun. 🎶🎸👍
@@molometer It has three ST-style single coil pickups!
Hello again Yezda, single coils have that distinctive Strat 60Mhz cycle hum or buzz as you describe. It's just how they sound.
There are almost 'silent' single coils but they cost more. Most people don't bother to change to them.
Once you are playing no one hears the buzz 🎶🎸👍

Thanks very interesting. 👍🏼

It's for beginners obviously as mentioned in the video.
No offense taken but 'your tone' needs some work. 😂
Is there anything you can’t do? 😂
I don't know. I haven't tried everything...yet! 😂😂👍🎸
