    I have a question: i have one 3yo chinchilla male and i want to get him a friend. The thing is, he is missing fingers on his left paw and im afraid the other chinchilla will kill him because of it. We just bought two gerbiles this week and one of them had an eye infection and next thing i know the healthy one had eaten half of its friends head, brain and eyeball included. I really dont want my chinchilla to meet the same fate so is it safe to get him a friend or should i keep him alone?

      Zoo keeper here! I take care of 3 chinchillas; they tend to use the bathroom a lot so it's recommended to keep their cage as a clean as possible since moisture from their poop and urine can cause mats in their fur if they come in contact with it for a prolonged period of time. That being said, you can get away with cleaning their tray/bedding every few days to a week. I'd recommend a deep clean at least once a week, but you can spot clean and sweep up any fecal you see as needed depending on the type of cage you're using. :) Hope that helps a little, I'd consider finding a chinchilla care website or forum to ask around if you have more questions.

      You should sweep out their cage of poop and hay at least once a day. If you are using a pill-free fleece (which is recommended over any other type of bedding)you can change it from every other day to once a week.

    • @shadowkissed2370
      @shadowkissed2370 Před rokem +5

      Chinchilla should be in an area between 60°F (15C) and 75°F (24C). Also, always have a cooling pad for them something like a marble slab in the fridge just incase your temperature goes high than 75F. If your home is on the warm side don't let your Chinchilla play and run around until it cools down. You can add ice to their water as well.

      If you are in an area that sells it one of the best foods you can buy is Oxbow Essentials. It has the best amount of nutrition than most other Chinchilla food brands. Never give your Chinchilla fruit or vegetables they cannot regulate their sugar or properly break sugar down. If you live in the US you can give them Plain Cheerios as treats but rarely. Cheerios in the UK have too much sugar. They can eat dried rose hips and dried rose petals, dried chamomile flowers, dried mint leaves, dried mint flowers, and dried cornflowers as treats in moderation.

      It's just that in a human muesli mix you get sugar and other ingredients unsuitable for a chinchilla.

    Technically speaking a chinchilla is an exotic animal so you'd have to take it to an exotic veterinarian. They would be more trained to deal with spay and neutering a chinchilla then your standard veterinarian would be. Because exotic veterinarians strictly do deal with exotic animals. That's your snakes your lizards reptiles or amphibians. Your chinchillas your ferrets your guinea pigs hamsters. Those are considered Exotics even the Birds are considered exotic pets. So exotic veterinarian is needed if you want to have your animal fixed. Your standard veterinarian that deals with dogs and cats is not going to be able to spay and neuter your chinchillas or any of your exotic animals. They're not trained to do that. The Exotic veterinarian would be the one trying to do with that. Same thing with Aquatic Life you need an aquatic veterinarian

    I don't know about that one chinchillas being the cutest pet you can have. I mean bunny rabbits lop eared bunny rabbits are freaking adorable. Gerbils are quite cute as well. So are hedgehogs with all their prickly bits. But if you're speaking rodents. I happen to be very fond of hamsters cuz I am a hamster mom. But I am kind of going from hamster to possibly a bigger hamster and then do something a little larger. I'm working my way up from small to bigger. To see if I can afford it or not. I currently have a dwarf turbo hamster he's a little boy hamster and he smells like corn chips which is kind of gross. He sent marking everything. He is actually my third hamster and my smallest hamster I've had. My first hamster had cancer and I had to have her euthanized my second hamster had a spinal injury and I had her euthanized. Now I have my little boy hammy. And he's just thinking adorable.
