  • The recently “Shopped" RGS #41 made a “Shakedown” run to Rockwood Friday 11/17/23. Part 2 opens with the Rockwood departure, Shalona Crossing, Pinkerton Siding, Hermosa and “Pacing” in the dark south of Trimble. Several stops are made to inspect, lubricate and deal with a hot journal box on the tender on this break in run.
In part 1, the chase up the hill to Rockwood starts at Hermosa. I record this historic event at several locations along the way. This 142-year-old locomotive looks and sounds great. More, including day 2, "SHAKEDOWN", Pacing With Tonnage at, • The Rio Grande Souther... and The Last Rio Grande Southern Train Out Of Durango 11/27/23.
The 70-year-old RGS #41 was purchased by Knotts Berry Farm for the Ghost Town & Calico Railroad in 1951 and has spent the last 72 years running clockwise around the less than a mile circle.
The #41 was built by Baldwin Locomotive Works in 1881 as a 2-8-0 Consolidation, for the D&RG as #409 "Red Cliff", sold to the RGS and renumbered #41 in 1916 and classified as a "C-19" in 1921. In Feb. 2022 the #41 was trucked to the Durango and Silverton RR for a complete rebuild and has been off limits to unauthorized photographs and videos till now.
    ENJOY.

You sure were unlucky to witness 41 shakedown run on D&S. I sure wish I got a chance to see it run at D&S, but knowing that this and many other vids exist I'm glad I can watch. And feel great that I've gotten to see this engine many times over the years at Knotts Berry Farm. Sure it's not going as fast as it is in the video, but that engine still has a special place in my heart, for being the first steam engine I had ever seen and ridden behind.

You know I love these old trains. My grandfather brother worked on RR in Ohio. Thanks 🙏
Looks like they grease it allot. 👍👍. Why did they stop so much? Thanks 🙏

Glad you enjoyed it, Stephen. Freshly made parts need to wear in and lubricating help prevent overheating and damage. They did have a hotbox on the tender and had to jack up the box to replace the brass several times.

This whistle’s almost sounded identical like the Polar Express, but sounds very beautiful, marvelous, and magnificent majestic. Another good news. 1225 Pere Marquette is finally restored and running again. Now we need to put this whistle on 1225 Pere Marquette.

Hello Bob, a great video about the first operations of the C-19 #41 on the Durango & Silverton narrow gauge railway. Fantastically filmed, the maintenance work and the journeys. Didn't this locomotive already run under number 446? Thanks for showing and have a good week. Best regards Wolfgang

Wow, a wonderful chance to see a steam locomotive traveling a night! Beautiful! At ~6:30, the track looks very wavy. Is it really that bad? I had fun checking what the various whistle signals meant-just researched those this morning. Thanks for this 2-part video. Nice to know she will return to KBF, her home for many years.

Thanks for watching and your nice comment. The track looks wavy because of the telephoto lense. Watch The Last Rio Grande Southern Train Out Of Durango, 11/27/23. ... studio.czcams.com/users/videofZrfbxq-M4M/monetization/ads?o=U

Just happened to notice..... at @ 10:30+..... there was more fire "Flashing" around the ashpan than I have ever seen on any other oil-fired Loco. Are the D&SNG rebuild crews aware of this fact?

This is beautiful. I remember seeing her in the KBF shop tour back in late 99. Is it returning to Knotts after this?
