Poem by Harriet Monroe
Inspired by a quiet evening in the Blue Ridge Mountains
Photos by Elaine Hagenberg
Conducted by Dr. Ryan Beeken
"Still and calm
In purple robes of kings,
The low-lying mountains sleep at the edge of the world.
The forests cover them like mantles;
Day and night
Rise and fall over them like the wash of waves.
Asleep they reign.
Silent they say all.
Hush me, O slumbering mountains-
Send me dreams."
-Harriet Monroe - Krátké a kreslené filmy
Just did this piece for PMEA 12 District Choir. It has quickly become my favorite piece to perform. Thank you for composing this!
Yo I’m doing this for pmea district 7 choir this year!
My favorite from PMEA District 5
This was the last song my high school choir got to perform before the pandemic. Now my senior year is over, and listening back to this it’s making me emotional. Thinking to all the people I’ve met over the years, and how I’m going on to the next chapter of my life to become a music teacher myself. Thank you for this wonderful piece of music.
I’ve just done this this past PMEA district 2-5 chorus concert at Seneca as a Bass 1. One of the most expressive and imaginative songs I’ve ever had the privilege to be apart of! Dr. Beeken was amazing and such a nice man to conduct for us.
Singing with dr. beeken at pmea district 7 choir this january! glad to hear he's a great guy. also bass 1 gang 💪
What a magnificent piece of music! Thank you Elaine. And so happy to see you recognized at the Iowa State event.
I’m in this recording! My freshman year at iup as a bass 2. It warms my heart to hear us under direction of Ryan Beeken. Oh how I miss him.
Just last month we sang this with Ryan 😂
Oh no stinking way. What's your favorite part of the song?
I’m singing this at my youth district festival this Saturday with him!
hey again!! I’ve already commented on this video, but I would LOVE this on Spotify. Maybe? Thanks!!
After 2 years of not hearing this song, I looked at my old programs from PMEA in Region 3 and I saw this song. Immediately, all the words and bass 1 part came flooding in and I sang it out for no reason. This song is the reason I started to compose again. Dr. Beeken is a wonder when conducting this song and I was so glad to remember my final PMEA concert ever with this song.
Such an honor to be a part of this and hear it all over again! I still get the same chills I did a year ago
Doing this song for my winter concert, and its genuinely just so beautiful. I showed it to a friend that recently went through a traumatic life change because he wanted to see what we were working on for chorus, and he broke down next to me and was able to open up a bit. Even though it wont be able to help him in the long run, its music like this that helps cope with emotions in a healthier way. The power that pieces like this evoke from us emotionally is why I sing and why I love music so much.
Is performed this in the district 6 choir this was commissioned by and I'm so happy that a public recording has come out. Love this song so much!!
Yes I've been waiting since districts for this to release
Lovely thank you.
I often come back to listen to this to remind myself why I am a music teacher and what my mission is. It was an honor to be a part of the choir in this recording!
i wish this was on spotify
I missed out on getting to perform this at my spring choir concert because school was canceled. I was so angry but luckily I can listen to it here.
