My dad saw an accordion at a thrift store he was considering purchasing, and this has been quite informative on what to look for.

Very helpful. Wow, lots to check but considering the cost of fixing an accordion, it is well worth taking the time.

I once had a tiny hint of mildew from a nice ebay accordion I still play regularly and got rid of it pretty quick. I removed the bellows and Reed blocks and shined an Ultra violet light in and on everything for about 30 minuites. That seemed to have removed the smell. Has that wonderful and unique old papery wood accordion smell.

I picked up a vintage accordion from a antique store for 80$ has 2 switches above the keyboard they did not work. Last key on the keyboard was sticky and another key was lifted higher than the rest. Bass side had 1 sticky button out of the 120. No bad reeds on bass side. 3 reeds on keyboard side are silent on bellows push. Sticky keys can be fixed easily. Mine had a peace of wood shaving stuck in it. The base button wire was slightly bent fixed with needle nose pliers. The keyboard switches had slipped from the catch and was fixed when I opened the front to straighten the lifted key. Replacement reed flaps and reeds can be bought online mid price. Reeds are held on to the blockes with wax. An afternoon with proper tools and some intelligence is all that's need to fix a second hand accordion. Builds character. Only shotty accordions have rivited left hand straps.

Unfortunately accordions are not all built the same . It can take days to fix some accordions, some intelligence is a necessity , patience is definitely needed, especially if your going to try tuning one yourself !

my old accordion had a sticky key and button. it was a pain to repair. I did it myself because I don't believe I should have an instrument if I am not willing to learn how to maintain and repair it.

What’s the problem when it sounds asthmatic on a couple of the buttons?? Are there special tools required to work on the accordion?? Where does one order them??

    • @nvdawahyaify
      @nvdawahyaify Před 2 lety

@@daisyduke7473 im not sure what the problem would be. Does it make a note? There are special tools for accordion repair. Im not sure where to get them. I know that most issues can be repaired with some basic tools and some ingenuity.

You like that 3 voices Verdi? It has a slow beating tremolo.Nice to hear but somewhat powerless.... perhaps later a bit of boring? Best is a box with 3 voiced tremolo, which you can reduce by muting one of the 3 reeds.(ooo or oo)

I have bought accordions on ebay before and most were in good condition as long as the price is around the range that it should cost. If the accordion is priced too low then there’s usually a problem with it. Always ask the seller questions.

Edwin Maldonado pardon me , but the size of the accordion depends on the size of the person.
As an adult I can not play one of less than 18""
Also if you need a professional sound you need the more full size
      Thanks.

I always wanted those C-system chromatic accordions that’s commonly played all over France and Portugal (companies like Piermaria, Cavagnolo, Fratelli Crosio, Maugein, etc.), but it’s hard to find a second-hand model that meets my personal criteria.

I have an old accordion witch is exactly as you discribed.
looks good on the outside, but on the inside, it’s dreadful.
it is an old stile italian accordion, I’m sure it was good when new, but it’s now had it’s day.
it was given to me by a family member who never actually used it, but had it in the attic.
needless to say, a few years later, a family member bourght me a new one. still second hand, but only 15 years old so a lot better than the other. i don’t use the old one now.

Also, if you do decide to come all the way to Saskatoon, there is a jewel of an accordian at the antique shop, "the indefinite article" and for only $240 (neg) CAD you could own a mint condition pearlescent mahine similar to the one in this video from an untutored eye, but in gold and canary yellow and ivory. Truly spectacular, but too big for a beginner, so I left it.

best way to buy a acc is to take out the reed blocks and look at the reeds esp on the inside reeds and look for rust on them, if you find that do not buy it you can also see the condition of the leather reed flaps, if they are curled dont buy it and also take the grill off to see the condition of the valves.

Sorry but some of your comments are wrong. balsa wood is not in an accordion and never spray wd-40 on wooden keys. Most simple repairs can be made by anyone handy. If everyone listened to you they would toss every vintage accordion in the trash.

I stand to differ. I have an almost 100 year old hohner tango ii ( you could consider that vintage) and it sounds better than anything else with 80 bass, Can't compare it with new hohner models, bravo iii, or the weltmeister achat or other models they make because is way above them. I have no video with it but may post one soon.

We have an old shop with an old guy who can repair any kind of accordion and could probably build one with his knowlege. Ed's Musical Instrument Repairs, eds-musical-instrument-repair.business.site on 2nd ave north in saskatoon, just north of the bus terminal. I just bought a sweet little modest hohner in an antique shop on impulse and took it to ed's for a look-over.
