Shows with great writing always trump shows that are just effects heavy. That’s why modern shows will be forgotten if they haven’t been already. Shows like B5, Star Trek prior to 2004, Dr Who prior to 1987. These shows all had good writing and the effect while dated today were the best available at the time and were there to add to the story, not the other way around

If you’re going to send a military ship in, you might as well make sure that it’s armed. A non-hostile First One might let you go if it realizes that you’re objecting to what it’s currently doing.
As an analogy: Imagine the Walkers as a human whose never seen a kitten before, and picks it up. Momma cat has no chance of destroying the curious human, and she and her baby are dead if the human WANTS to hurt them, but the human might just go “OW! Okay, fine, I’ll stop playing with this thing and set it down! You guys are SO cute, btw!”
I find it interesting that the Narn Regime not only granted G’Kar’s request, but sent TWO fighters instead of one. Either a two-craft patrol were the closest heavy fighters to reroute, or the Regime was even more scared of the Region than G’Kar himself was.

The ending scene is edited a bit. This is the full iconic dialog between G'Kar and Catherine Sakai
Catherine : Ambassador! While I was out there, I saw something. What was it?
G'Kar : [points to a flower with a bug crawling on it] What is this?
    Catherine : An ant.
    G'Kar : Ant!
Catherine : So much gets shipped up from Earth on commercial transports it's hard to keep them out.
G'Kar : I have just picked it up on the tip of my glove. If I put it down again [puts finger back to flower] and it asks another ant: "What was that?!?!"
    [chuckles]
G'Kar : ...How would it explain? There are things in the universe billions of years older than either of our races. They're vast, timeless, and if they're aware of us at all, it is as little more than ants, and we have as much chance of communicating with them as an ant has with us. We know... we've tried, and we've learned that we can either stay out from underfoot; or be stepped on.
Catherine : That's it? That's all you know?
G'Kar : Yes, they are a mystery. And I am both terrified and reassured to know that there are still wonders in the universe, that we have not yet explained everything. Whatever they are, Miss Sakai, they walk near Sigma 957, and they must walk there alone.

Of course the Narn Regime tried to contact the Walkers! They want to have highly advanced allies who can even hurt the Centauri severely - during the show few races could (even without Shadow help the Narn would have lost against the Centauri, it would just have been a lot bloodier on both sides and it'll have taken longer, too!)...Earth might have been able to (with their military in better shape then during the Earth-Minbari-War, with better tech and newer ships, most of the older ones having been lost in the war!), the Minbari of course (but it would have been a bloody affair, as the Centauri are nearly at their level with artificial gravity and even energy-shields (some of the Primus Cruisers have them, but they are ancient ships sadly, so can't use their full potential, having been built before those systems became available)) - Note: I am not counting any first ones, so no Vorlons (could have easily destroyed them!) or shadows (same!) etc.

White Stars were built using Vorlon technology, and Vorlons were at least as advanced as Shadows if not more. And they were also susceptible to telepaths - that's why they attempted to eradicate all telepaths when they first originated on Narn homeworld (and Vorlons artificially altered all other young races to have telepaths).
