Milwaukee renter seeking help after part of her ceiling caves in

- "I heard a noise, I got up and checked on the kids I thought maybe one of them had fallen out of the bed, so I got up and checked on the kids," said Lametta Hamilton-Cooper. "I didn't see anything so I came into the bathroom." That's when she discovered her ceiling and the roof above had caved in. That was ten days ago. Since then, Lametta says not much has been done to fix it. And that's why she emailed TMJ4 News asking for help.
Lighthouse, our specialty reporting unit, got in touch with Lametta and is exploring the rights tenants like Lametta have, and what landlords are held accountable for.
"This is the bathroom, this is where the ceiling fell," explained Lametta as she pointed to a gaping hole in her apartment.

Their upstairs neighbor had a long term leak. This happens all the time in units where the bathrooms are stacked on top of each other. 3x I have gone through this.
Girl you should have had renters insurance because he isn't responsible for alternative placement or give u any money.
If I can't shower, I'm not paying rent!!! It's sad that there are no regular inspections of rental properties. Allowing landlords to get away with things like this. It says a lot about the character of the landlord and eventually he won't have a building to bring in extra cash if he doesn't readjust his budget and start investing in his property.
If the tenant doesn't like the terms or conditions, they have every right & opportunity to leave.
@@johneckert1365 actually once the lease is violated by the landlord the tenant has every right to withhold payment. A renters payment is reliable on all things within the terms of the lease for functioning. So unless thats the way it was when she signed her lease she has every right to stop payment . If the landlord don't like it he can repair it or take her to court and go for eviction. Either way, she's living rent free until action is taken. Which is quicker? Which is better for the landlord? Ain't too many renters out there willing to rent a place like that so good luck getting a new tenant

@@johneckert1365 it's not being a professional victim when you pay money, sign a lease, and then that agreement is not upheld. If she wasn't holding up to her end he would evict her. Might as well live rent free seems how he don't wanna fix it while she saves for a new place cause no one's gonna stay there like that indefinitely. The city inspector will declare it uninhabitable

If shes proactive she’d get a lawyer paid on contingency and seek damages. If he tries to evict in retaliation, the burden wouldnt be much for her legal team to prove

I can’t believe this is a real news story. She could have just cleaned it up and kept using the shower until it got fixed. Who just leaves it looking like that? What is she waiting for some animals to come in through that hole and start living there? Cover the hole. Clean it up. Call and get it fixed. Act like an adult.

@romktch17 What's stopping her from fixing that roof and then deducting it off her rent? I guess she'd have to set aside her victimhood and be proactive about the situation though. We both know that won't happen.....
Fix it and deduct the repair from your rent.
If you owned a roofing company, would you want to go into that neighborhood? Get your tools or work truck stolen while your up on that roof. They'll steal your ladder too, then ya gotta climb down through the hole in the roof and into that lady's nasty bathtub.
