The Truth About Slay the spire - Hry
As a game dev making a roguelike deckbuilder, this game is the gold standard of the genre and my primary inspiration, I’d like to specifically point out its usage of tooltips that explain keywords when you hover over cards, the relatively simple enemies in act 1, and the fact that most losses are due to taking damage over the course of multiple fights.
Sounds awesome! Do you have a name yet?
@@alexandrajones4518 Haven't thought of one yet, honestly it's gonna be a while before I do since I'm new to making games and still working on getting the basic card and deck mechanics working
@@qedsoku849 As a (VERY) amateur game dev myself, I completely understand.
@@qedsoku849any updates on it?
@@alexandrajones4518 prioritise the UI over everything else otherwise you might have problems hooking everything together later which could kill a project
I remember when Mercenaries came out and people hoped it was going to be like StS. This game is a masterpiece.
People didn't just hoped, they expected it to be, as the devs literally name-dropped slay the spire when the mode was being announced. And then they fucking released Raid:Heroes of Warcraft after that - the sheer audacity
Mercenaries was pure lost potential. What a joke and a cop out.
I can NOT believe our boy first tried all four classes back to back, that is INSANE! Good job mr. Ran!
The base difficulty is insanely easy if you've played any sort of strategy game before. One of the annoying things about STS is just how long it takes to unlock the higher challenges. Realistically, he's probably going to get to Ascension 6-10 before losing runs becomes a semi-regular occurrence.
That's very true, but even on A0 you can get absolutely shafted by a bunch of poor interactions, especially so if you have NEVER played this game before. Like, the dude is learning the rules, the classes AND the cards at the same time while winning four back to back runs. Color me impressed.@@G.Aaron.Fisher
Doesn't Neow's Gift require that he failed a run before? I'm pretty sure you don't get those on your first run.
He also had 2900 damage to heart at end of his 'first ever' run, which given he did 2100 damage in previous runs, most likely including 1-2 clears and however many previous attempts.
@@raijuqt He played it several months (or maybe a couple years) prior, that's why - he says it at the start of the full stream. I think he did Ironclad and Silent before?
It's not quite "first trying" them all, but it's pretty close given the long pause he did and the fact he forgot most of the mechanics for the classes he _had_ played.
you get it on the first run of every character as well as losing before the first boss@@raijuqt
3:27 slay the spire is the game that changed that for me. It made me appreciate using consumables to get through a tight spot way more
Not using things because they could be useful later is sometimes referred to as collector’s anxiety
Pointcrow appears
Or the more known term of being a hoarder.
I've heard it as too-good-to-use syndrome
HP Potion syndrome
also elixir syndrome
Such a good game. Just a genuinely healthy gaming experience. Low stress, enables high level and low level gameplay, replayability, pick it up and drop it whenever, etc. I have 600+ hours in this game and still enjoy it.
card game that if we lost we say "alright gg lets try again"
The title should've been "I Spent 10 Hours Slaying The Spire to Prove IT'S RIDICULOUS"
Its not to late to change it
I’m changing it
whats the original title?
@@danang5 what do you mean this has always been the original title ? :)
@@RarranOH GOD HE DID IT
Would also recommend Monster Train. Has similarities to Slay the Spire but plays out a lot differently
Found it a lot of fun. It does feel very different as the damage numbers get super high and the maths element is taken away from the player a bit but if you like STS then you'll definitely have some fun with it.
Monster Train is one of the only ones that actually does things sufficiently differently. Most games in the genre post StS fail to understand what makes it interesting and are only worth a couple plays per class.
Way to easy. Beat it my first 2 game in a row and refunded it
@@h4xnslash900man but theres so many other things to try in monster train defenetly some of the class combos are strong but like man youre missing out
Wish it was more popular.
design, pacing, learning curve, mechanics. Slay the spire litereally slays. with so much build variety, replayability and the outstanding modders out there
This is genuinely one of my favorite games. For people who love hearthstone dungeon runs, this is like that but times x1000.
Aw man yeah I f*ing loved Kobolds and Catacombs. Don't know which came first but Kobolds and Catacombs and slay the spire are like crack cocaine to me
If memory serves me correctly, this is how they advertised Mercenaries when they first showed how the mapping would be in the "choose your next path" and "each run will be different".
Now you see why Mercenaries flopped as hard as it did lmao
If you wanna see what mercenaries could have been... check out path of champions in the riot card game legends on runeterra. Amazing. Just *chef's kiss*
@@TheBloodypimp
Yea PoC is great.
@@redridingcapei have played a few pvp games.... but i've been playing poc.... so much... ^_^ also janna is op op. ^_^
Have 450 hours in the game and recently went for completionist. Man try to get all the trophies in this game is so fun. I normally never do platinum/completionist stuff in games but this game just hits different.
STS was easily my game of the year when it came out. Insane depth.
Great video, it’s always good to see someone enjoy this game as much as I do. If you liked this one you might enjoy monster train, it’s another deck building rogue like with a sort of tower defense theme
Just for context, you start the game on the lowest difficulty, the game (optionally) gets harder each run.
It’s so fitting how you were biting your nails and being kinda nervous with defect but then went straight into confidence with the watcher
If you liked slay the spire you should definitely try Night of the Full Moon. It's has similar mechanics but with 9 characters with different cards.
7:51 I wonder if he got to experience a pandora box run
A frost prime collab would be soooo cooool! I feel like you guys would have great chemistry.
PLEASE PLAY MORE! I would love to watch Rarran climb to A20... it's a trek and a half and there's so many more interesting builds to discover!
Slay the Spire is one of my favorite games. Happy to see you try it!
I love playing the Defect the most. Something about his card and the orb mechanic clicks with me
You just feel so safe and cozy when you are surrounded by like six frost orbs giving you 10 block each.
You're literally just chilling.
@@franciscopetrucci pun definitely intended. Also all the lightning orb destroying everything
claw build best for pauper achievement
@@mcwurzn8194 CLAW is the LAW
@@franciscopetrucci That's fun when that works out, but I usually go for glass-cannon storm power decks that kill encounters in 1-2 turns and then heal back any damage taken with self-repair. Just gotta watch out for the Awakened One who scales insanely fast if you just go crazy with powers right out the gate.
I’ve beat each class in Ascension 20 multiple times, but this is impressive. All classes first try 👌Well done
The class-based deck builder rpg like this is genuinely one of the cooler hyper-specific genres. I recommend Chrono Ark since you enjoyed this. It's kinda brutal, but the variety of characters to build your party (yes, party) makes it so fun.
Please make more of these videos, I’m new here but I really enjoy watching you play. Is there a VOD channel?
Ah yes, the "first try" where you already did ~1.5k to the heart before you even started the game. I think Rarran sometimes forgets that not every single person in the world is at his intellectual level of "genius".
He did note during the stream that he had played some StS months and months ago but that it's been so long that he's forgotten almost everything.
This game is so much fan! glad to hear you also enjoyed it a lot. Really impressive that you first tried it with all classes too! good stuff
Great video. I wholeheartedly recommend playing Astrea : The Six-sided Oracle next since it's a deck builder where your cards are dice. It's insane
Thank you Mr. Rarran, i love slay the spire
Masterpiece, wish there are more content though, it’s a very minimalist game
If people are looking for a co op game similar to Slay the Spire. I highly recommend Hellcard. Does have single player but it's at it's best when played with 1 or 2 friends. Absolute baller game, shame StS doesn't have co op
Never seen one of your videos and this was very enjoyable to watch!
the editing is on point my guy keep up the fantasist work
Watched both the stream and the video. Phenomenal content!!
I'm normally just here for the hearthstone content but would absolutely watch a series where you work your way up to Ascension 20.
This game becomes absolutely bonkers later and has enough synergies and variety it stays fresh for another 300 hours.
kewl vids, full runs would've been insane hope we might see some at some point :3
If you're playing more deck building roguelikes I really recommend wildfrost. The art and music rules and the gameplay is similar to spire but with the addition of positioning and turn order
You should try Astrea Six Sided Oracles if you haven't yet, it's my favorite roguelike since StS. Wildfrost was very fun too though.
I find it even nore interesting on how you've managed to flaunt yourself easily on these runs
Especially the watcher + Ragnarok combo
With that said Ggwp for also defeating the heart of the spire
Great video, great editing!
Slay the Spire tends to be extremely fun to play, a bit less to watch, but this was really entertaining!
Great game, great vid :) Hopefully this takes off and we can get some challenge runs in the future!
This game reminds me of my favorite anime Druga no Tou, wich was based on the game of the same name, wich probably was the first game with this idea of "climbing a tower that goes to the heavens while fighting monsters through its floors"
Rarran, protip: Slay The Spire viewers *adore* full gameplay videos. Easy content! Good job, too!
My mom wants to know when you are coming over again.
Same.
It is so interesting seeing someone come into StS after it has been out for so many years, to the point where more games than I can possibly count have since come out based almost entirely on the StS formula.
The only game that uses StS as inspiration that I have found can stand on its own separate from StS is Monster Train.
If you enjoyed StS, I think you may enjoy Monster Train. Unlike other games that have gone a similar route to StS, even with differences (e.g., Roguebook), Monster Train is absolutely able to stand alone as its own game in terms of quality, fun, and nuance.
Monster Train is pretty good. I'd put Wildfrost and Griftlands over it though.
I need some Frost Prime and Rarran content. The content would be AMAZING!!
1k hours in and 2 doses of 100%ing it, I still come back to good ol reliable slay the spire
Now we just need to get Rarran to play Slay The Spire: Downfall, a Standalone DLC sized mod to Slay The Spire.
I picked up slay the spire this week due to the autumn sale. I find it way more difficult. it took me multiple tries to beat the game for the iron clad, reject and watcher. but the silent is so fun to play for me. every time i use that class, i win. very fun game.
Very clearly have played this game before bud lol
Love how the smithing sounds sinks up with the music at 23:00
I can't imagine trying to learn all 4 characters back to back like that
lmao i was just playing this last night, game is fun asf especially w mods. never would have imagined my fav hearthstone player playing it
I love Slay the Spire. It's SO addictive and it's so rewarding to play.
I loved the part when rarran went "it's rarran time!" and rarran'ed all over the spire
I wish we had the other tuns as well. I wanted to see how you did overall. But good video!
3:25 ah yes, “too good to use syndrome”
As someone who primarily plays roguelites, I suffer from this real bad
This vid made me smiled so much. Haven’t played StS recently but I did a lot in the past. This was like seeing my little brother pick up and fall in love with an old favorite game 🥲
Watcher gameplay is like "Will Wrath stance kill me or let me kill the enemy?" every fight
17:19 this is what everyone was expecting from mercenaries. Imagine if mercenaries worked like this.
What is mercenaries?
@@pie6088The mode in Hearthstone.
A fun Video as always! , i hope you play "Night of the full moon " as well , it is quite like this game and i personally really like it.
Would love to see you play this again
This is my favorite game of all time, period. I've been playing it for the past three years on multiple platforms (pc, ps5, android, switch). Never did the math to know how much time I spent across all platforms, but I'm probably beyond 1000 hours (almost 600 on steam alone). I even bought a physical copy on switch recently that I'll maintain sealed, my single physical game collection that is actually complete 😊
This is basically infinite fun.
You don't actually have to beat the game to unlock the next class each by the way. You just have to finish a run, win or lose, with the three first characters. You do unlock something, however, if you beat it with all three of those.
That was a fun and really entertaining video.
I have never had fears of using potions. I'll use all three of my potions on one combat because I could not care less of I might need them later
great video mr.Rarran any plans on doing monster train ?
Please do the Downfall mod at some point, it adds 1 character and 10+ bosses to play as
yea it makes me sad that Mercenaries, which was hyped to be like StS turned out to be nothing like it.
Also Rarren you need to try out the fan Expansion "Downfall" it adds a new class AND allows you to play the game from the bosses POV
"Look how fast I breeze through an elite."
*Immediately cuts to the end of the fight.
Yeah, wow. That was really fast.
Would love to see more :D
Damn, Raran is such a relatable streamer, he also suffers from the 'I dont use potions or items because maybe the final boss has a 2nd phase and a phase after that phase and a phase after that phase etc' syndrome!
For me, this is the moust devilsh thing a dev team ever came up since Darkest Dungeon. Like, serious, the game is always ploting 5 steps ahead of you in every possible answer you give it. The countless time i survived with Lucky, isnt half of the times i became op and just losse anyway.
Just started playing it a couple days ago. It is amazing!! 10 hours doesn't do it justice. Play it for a week.
Sts is one of my favorite games ever. The depth of the card strategy is staggering.
Seeing a slay the spire video is amazing ! >:3
Then comes Ascension levels and the mods that add a bunch of cool new characters and game modes. Yeah it's a goodie
you're actually cracked at this game. what an incredible run.
One thing I noticed about this game, compared to Hearthstone, is mechanics tend to work how you'd hope they work. If you ever sit there, unsure of how an interaction will be, but you have 2 ideas, it's probably the idea that you want it to be.
That's a named trope, *Too Awesome To Use*
I love this game, the problem is that i have never been able to finish. Maybe i'm just dumb (possible) or bad at the game (very possible) but i have never gotten past the second "chapter" boss. But it's such a fun game either way.
My only tip is to watch better players and pay attention to the cars they pick / their justifications for the decisions they make are. While I can't speak for all StS streamers / content creators, a lot of the ones I watch try to always explain why they take certain cards/ make certain decisions. I'm certainly very bad at the game but I kept watching StS and also my friends who are better at the game and try to understand the thought processes.
@@Jaxter0987 it's better to just learn the cards, always watch out for synergies and try something different each time
That watcher deck is pretty much what I used to get a20
Downfall mod is a must for steam players. You get SO much more content getting to play as the villains.
sooo glad you checked it out and came to like it, but now the ultimate challenge begins:
try not to compare literally every card game in existence with Slay the Spire. Difficulty: impossible
100 hours in this game. would be way more if a20 wasnt too easy as i got used to the game.
what a game
Had to skip to the end just to see what your verdict was, very happy that you loved it! It's super fun! And well done on beating it first try on all characters! :O
I can't believe he finished the game first try with the Watcher, she is so demanding to play xD
@@sallomon2357how? Watcher is by far the easiest 😂. You know what they say, the watcher has lethal
@@opatzo9165 She's by far the strongest class but I would definitely argue she's also the hardest.
@@Jaxter0987 No chance. If you're not too lazy to calculate lethal, she's super easy. Literally you can get over 50% winrate basically just forcing infinites lol.
@@opatzo9165 that's only true with a couple builds, otherwise she's similar to silent
This game is amazing, but dang it it's so hard to beat the true final boss!
This game feels like a combination of Rogue adventure: Roguelike RPG and Tavern rumble: Roguelike card, obviously I don't know which came first or if those are based on this but I thought it was an interesting observation nontheless
Imma try it, thanks for the recommendation!
This dude has definitely played a decent amount of slay the spire
I'm interested to see where this video goes
After finishing the video, i agree!, STS is very similar with HS in how it's easy to understand yet very nuanced!. Interested to see if you'll explore any mods in the future
Finally Rarran played the superior card game and one of the best roguelike.
Hmm... Weird that you have 2,900 damage on the heart in the past for a 'first completed run of slay the spire'
Otherwise great video
3:36 I believe most gamers refer to this as "too good to use syndrome" lol
I would be so hyped to see him come back to StS and try out the Downfall mod and their more complicated characters, or _maybe_ even the Packmaster mod.
The downfall mod is definitely the most polished mod out there, almost feeling like the base game, and the characters, while sometimes being a bit more complicated than the base characters, are really fun and interesting.
Half the characters in the mod aren't even that much more complicated, like Slime Boss, Gunslinger, Guardian, or Champ.
I'd also be interested to seeing him play Touhou: Lost Branch of Legend, and his reaction to how that game is kinda a mix between StS and the MtG color system.
He'd probably be able to have some interesting opinions on how that game's mana system differs from Hearthstone, StS, and Magic.
Looking lovely today, Rarrarrian. Stay cool!
This just makes me wanna play it more
videos that make me realise i am way worse at this game than i thought lol. i will never beat the heart and i have made peace with that
Should be getting analog version in the mail soon. 😊
is there somewhere i could watch the full stream VOD?
I love you so much for doing this
