One thing I really don't like about US planners are the stupid sayings and quotes that they are filled with. Like "Chase Your Dreams" and "Girl Boss" etc. That's so tired and "basic b*tch." Those so-called inspirational sayings really make me groan and roll my eyes.
I honestly did not discover my love for stationery until I stumbled upon Japanese planners so it’s definitely jpns for me!!!

loooooved the outro 😂
If possible, can you give me a link which ships the midori MD diary to german please😍😍😍
I want to buy the A4 1day 1page book
Btw. I'm beginning to learn basic Japanese ❤❤❤❤🌹🌹🌹❤❤❤❤🌹🌹❤❤❤🌹❤❤😁😁😁
Monday start and PAPER QUALITY. Paper quality cannot be overrated. Plus, very few spiral bindings, which catch on bags and get in the way of writing.
Cannot agree with you more on paper quality! Monday start is great too, though the school planners that my school makes are Monday start anyway so I don't notice it all that much.
Personally I actually prefer spiral bindings though, pages can be more easily torn but they lay flat without fuss and without creasing the binding which can look unsightly, plus I can use more of the page because the edges of the page isn't being inhibited by the other page or creating a valley into the unknown.
@@pandabugdiaries2384 well in my bag I have a spiral binded notebook but I hate that spiral because sometimes these spiral thingies will scratch my other books or paper next to it. The other ones are more flat so it doesn’t has that issue
In my opinion spiral is the worst of both worlds. The inability to easily modify like a notebook with the bulkiness of rings.
YES.
The metal rings literally are *THE* worst :(
@@DAISY-nq2jk I think personally the spiral on college rule notebooks are not the problem, but it’s more like the book bag. BUT in middle school I had gotten a binder (three rings, 3 inch rings) and it had fit all my notebooks. I think it’s a simple solution but that’s just for me
It's just so well formatted. I've never seen a weekly page that actually is enough space/prompts for me to actually find functional. A lot of American planners focus on unnecessary or repetitive elements
right! don't even get me started on the student-specific planners. they always have random facts or "tools" i don't use on the sides like multiplication tables or whatever.
Unnecessary or repetitive for YOU!! Not for everyone. Some people need those. Everything “American” isn’t bad. Grow up
@@corimoon3360 no, seriously. no one needs a paper ruler that isn't properly scaled and a "did you know?" section talking about whales. it's a more educational version of the back of a cereal box and no one above the age of maybe 10 needs that.
@@corimoon3360 no one said that because it was American it was bad lol. This just happens to be better.
@@corimoon3360 lmao u know that planner from target is ugly asf don't lie
I could never deal with Sunday start planners. maybe it's a cultural thing since I'm Finnish, but Sunday is the last day of the week, it doesn't make any sort of sense for it to be the first day of the week in my mind 🥴 I also use a Japanese planner but it's actually none of these
. . . and you are not going to tell us which one ? : ) come on !
@@hoyinwong oh I figured since it's not by some major stationery brand it's not that interesting, but it's the A5 Sumikko Gurashi schedule planner from San-X, I usually get the Rilakkuma one but I wanted a change this year 😆 even Japanese character goods are so high quality!!
@@onerva. Thank you for this!
Where I live, Sunday is the first day of the week so Monday start planners annoy me. Some planners don’t even have Sunday in them! So I have to use the Saturday part (im talking about those planners for school days) that’s why I like undated planners. The downside is: I’m too lazy to customize every single page.
Italian here and idk maybe it's a European thing but Sunday comes last, end of the story, my brain can't handle it any other way 🤣
i will say, as someone who lives in japan currently, paper quality really depends on how much you're willing to spend. sure, compared to American products in the same price range, they're probably better, but not all Japanese planners will be. basically, im saying if you want to cheap out, buying japanese wont necessarily get you much better quality
I lived in Japan for several years as well and I know for a fact that not all Japanese planners are designed with simple color palettes and minimal images, either! I always liked buying the small character ones from my local stationary store, along with tons of decorative stickers. There was one publisher that did a lot of Western fairy-tale themed planners that I absolutely loved. It had full-color illustrations on every page. I really miss those planners!
Very true
To be honest, i dont like the whole "them vs us" mentality that i see in these types of videos.
Pretty sure no matter where you go, there will always be a low quality and high quality items. I mean, everyone is human.
@@ron4202 well, i think its also got a lot to do with orientalism and japanophilia. but yeah, there will be a range of quality in every country's products
Similar price points will still get you a better planner from Japan. My €12 planner from Muji (Japanese store) ticks all the same boxes mentioned in the video, as well as some they didn't mention: Monday start, great paper quality, minimal bleed-through, minimalist design, lie-flat, very thin and portable while still giving me enough space to decorate and write out descriptions for every single day of the year, etc. A planner for that price produced in the US or even here in France would be utter garbage... I would know as that's what I used to use for a few years.
I used to get planners from western supermarkets for roughly the same price point every single year. One year, I finally decided to save up and get the Hobonichi Techo. I absolutely loved it and bought it the following year, but the price was way too steep to keep it up in the long term (especially with customs into France), so I tried out the Muji planner and it's basically like a budget Hobonichi Weeks with the price point of a supermarket student planner.
also, japanese grid paper reigns superior in terms of how dark the lines are
it's much more pleasant to look at
Yes!
I’ve been bullet journaling for years in Stalogy 365 notebooks, but I decided to go with a new system for 2022 because I just got overwhelmed with having to set up spreads every month. So, I settled with the Hobonichi Cousin Avec. I can’t wait to use it-everything is created for me, I just have to write in it. I have ADHD and sometimes prep work can frustrate me, like having to draw out monthly spreads. Plus I get discouraged if it looks messy or unorganized. Your channel is the reason I’ve gone with the Cousin Avec!
I love my Hobonichi for these reasons. I started using the cousin last year and I got an Avec and a Weeks for next year. I picked the Avec because my cousin got so chunky this year. I hope you love yours.
I am also neurodiverse with ADHD and ASD. perfectionism killed me in using a bujo. I switched 2 years ago to a JT, and added a Hobonichi weeks this last year to track my impulse spending, oops I mean my budget!
@@JessicaComptonHR I got the Avec because I wanted room to slide in a 1/2 year Stalogy for journaling/brain dumps. I was doing planning and journaling all in one notebook and even with an index, it was just a mess- so now I’m happy to be able to separate the 2. It kind of freaked me out lol the thought of having 2 planners at once, but I’m now considering picking up the Hobonichi Weeks. That way I can carry the smaller book in my purse and not have to haul around my a5. Happy planning!
@@Stormbrise I definitely get where you’re coming from: the bujo community is a wonderful place but it also had a way of making me feel like I wasn’t doing enough. Or being creative enough. Then I noticed it took me almost an hour to create a monthly spread. Had to throw in the towel. I, too, track my….budget…and no, I have no idea where all this perfume came from 🥲
@@SrirachaSandvvitch we have a perfume collector here...
I'm so surprised that tracking moon phases isn't typical in the US, even the most basic store-own brands have it in the UK!
Can you tell me why moon phases is important in a planner? For example, what do you use it for, in what cases?
@@marllram so far as I know it would *mostly* be for spiritual /religious purposes - moon phases have some relation to the calculation of Easter, for example. Otherwise, I believe its a thing that some crime rates are supposed to correlate w/ the moon even if only because of available light. Like I wouldn't expect there to be outcry if it suddenly wasn't something that featured as standard in the UK, but its what I'm used to :P
Because we are a country that burns witches and has a fucked up sense of spirituality. We lack eastern wisdom
@@marllram Assuming you are a woman... moon phase can help you track your period.
@@napalm.bopper how does that work?? moon phases have no affect on your period as far as I'm aware and the only similarity is that they both function on a 28-day routine.
I don't use planners yet I watched this whole video. So aesthetic ✨
The answer is yes. I have purchased and tried dozens of planners over the decades. The paper quality and Monday start of Japanese planners made me a fan about 8 years ago. I just ordered my 5th Jibun Techo Biz. No planner is perfect, but it comes the closest for my needs.
I feel the same with Hobonichi which I discovered 2 years ago. Took a peek at Jibun, but for now I found their printing too pronounced for my needs. But it is in the back of my mind.
Haven’t watched the whole video yet but, the answer is “YES.”
So I read this as “are Japanese better Planners?” A few times and couldn’t figure out why it was so wrong.
Then I realized I was still dyslexic after the working day is finished as well.
I love the minimalistic aesthetic of Japanese planners but the thing I cannot deal with is the space to write is too small!!! My handwriting is not that small. This is why I go with minimalist planners like the ones offered by Moleskin.
Right?? Same here! I got the jibun techo A6 size and it wasn't roomy for me. I used to write in it for the first few months, but I kind of got tired of writing too small, I had no room to really record what I ate and stuff. I also wish it had English translation because it's not optimal to me to go on the website just to find translation for each page. I also didn't like that every month on each day had the mood tracker and then the weekly set up also had the mood tracker so I was recording my mood twice and having to do that just felt redundant to me. But I do love the set up and the design of it. Wish they had an English translation one like they do for the hobonichi. This year I just got a simple monthly undated planner. It has lines for each day of the month for planning and I prefer my monthly boxes to have the lines in it. I got the Apica monthly I think. It was cheaper so yeah xD
Wonderland222 is good
YouthWill as well
Hobonichi A5 is more spacy on weeks and daily (which Jibun don't have), I struggled to fill them with something
The thing is when writing Japanese hiragana, katakana and kanji is that their lettering is small so they use pencils and pens with much thinner and finer tips! That's how they get the lettering print so small but if you use western pens, their pen tips are as fine and thin.
I love my jibun techo. I got one last year to help me keep track of my life in grad school and it has made me feel so much more sane this year already. Spring is thesis time and I already bought my 2022 planner refill and I can't wait to plan my life down to the hour for the next 6 months......I will probably keep using it for years after grad school because it is so easy to use and stay organized and makes me feel very professional and fancy
This makes it soooooo much easier to choose which type of planner to buy!! TYSM
I love Japanese planners! I got into them in 2020. I got the Midori MD Diary for 2021, and I love it so much. I am trying the Hobonichi for 2022. I love that Japanese planners are structured enough for me, but is free enough for me to decorate or draw depending on how I feel.
Exactly! Perfect balance of pre-printed and customizable. That's what I love about my Japanese planner too.
I just ordered the Hobinichi Techo planner! I couldn’t resist, it’s so cute! Can’t wait to use it for the new year ^^
I use a hobonichi A6 for text journaling, but the ones I really love are planners like the hobonichi Weeks (for not-cute, straight planning) and the Traveler's Notebook refill with week+notes (for short journaling with stickers and washi and random stuff pasted on) because I really like having both structured weekly space and another unstructured page I can use for lists or tasks or whatever.
i started bullet journaling back in 2019 and its one of the best decisions i have ever made. I just love knowing that all the spreads i plan on were made by me and the process of drawing also is so fun! But i am still only in 9th grade and have a lot of time in my hands... i might switch to a planner in the future, but i am definitely gonna be bullet journaling for 2022 :)
im an university student and bullet journalling worked wonders for me, i got a jibun techo for 2022 bc im lazy but now im already missing the creative freedoms haha. also you can buy decent dot grid journals for 1/2 the price of a jibun techo so it is cost effective to bujo if you play ur cards right ! but i dont regret buying the jibun techo :)
This is a nice informative video. Thank you for the thoughtfulness and the small fun facts or planner tips.
Thank you and take care everyone and stay safe out there.
I am a simple human being. I see that JetPens uploads, I click.
Halfway through this and the "Work on draft! Stay focused!" is such a mood!
Also what FP and ink is this??? czcams.com/video/6xgOQougBKY/video.html
It's Pilot Namiki Blue Ink! www.jetpens.com/Pilot-Namiki-Blue-Ink-60-ml-Bottle/pd/24456
I have that FP in Fine - Pilot Prera. Lovely writer if you like finer nibs.
I love how frequently you guys update these days! 😆
This may seem weird but I own a Stalogy and a Midori notebook and there are two things I adore about them both: the smell when I first get them, and the paper. Unexplainable. I’m never going back from the Stalogy. Turning the pages is a little joy that can’t be beat.
I just order a few days ago the Hobonichi techo 2022. This is my 3rd year buying it. Love it.
I love how we can basically express our own creativity with the Japanese planner. I love seeing other’s creativity. But i’m impatient. So American for me. It’s sad but I just cant sit and customiseLOL
Love y'alls channel cause I got so many good recommednations on which pens and pencils are good. Thanks, and I'm sure these planners are great for those with ADD/ADHD
Not quite sure how this ended up on my recommendations, considering how I have never been able to use a planner 😅 Every year I buy one in the hopes to actually get organized, but I never do. But hey maybe I'll get a Japanese Planner for 2022 and it will work out for once 😂
You should try Notion or a digital planner
@@howdarkisursoul8358 I'm using my phone calendar to remember appointments etc. But that's it. Tried notion etc but ended up never opening it either 😅
Same here…but I guess it’s because of my digital “planer” that I started doing in my notes, since a week…
I hadn’t heard anyone talk about Japanese journal until now! They look cool!
wow thanks for the review, i'm also now on the fence to prep for next year's. Could you also do a video about bullet journal vs planner - i know this is probably harder to compare...
So nice to hear your voice on a video again! I enjoy how you narrate. Not that I don’t enjoy Josh and Stephanie.
I've tried several planners and I alwayd come back to hobonichis, it's the simple design, paper quality and awesome covers for me :)
In Australia, we have starting on Monday and also ones starting on Sunday. So both feel normal to me.. BUT my job decided the work week starts on a Thursday and goes through to Wednesday and I cannot wrap my head around that! Sooo confusing!
I use a Japanese planner, it is so easy to write on since I love journaling. It writes like smooth silk and it has all of the necessities I need!
My scheduling and homework management is way better than it used to be
I love Japanese planners! I use the jibun techo days, Hobonichi a6, cousin, weeks, and day free!
I like your video so much ❤️❤️
Your video make me very motivated
Thank you
You got me at not "lugging around three encyclopedias".
I use the Campos planner and I love it. I tried to use US planners but I could never keep up with them. Japanese planners is easier on the eyes and I love how mine could track how much I could study on the bottom. Since I have extra space on the bottom, I usually put my clubs and activities that are after classes so I don't forget.
two suggestions :
1 : A virtual custom planner you could produce and send to us and send the virtual's one to use with phone/PCs/tabs...
2 : A minimalist one (What where when who how...) everyday (plus a precut note part in a corner, with a precut corner in this part, to find today's page fast, by taking it off every day)
the hobonichi weeks is the love of my life 🥰
Awesome video as always! Reminded me that it's about time to get my planner for next year sorted soon too. Unfortunately my country currently isn't being shipped to due to COVID. Is there a list of countries still being shipped to or will worldwide shipping be back on any time soon? Hopefully I'll have a friend in whatever corner of the world is still open :)
You can choose the Hobonichi beginning from Sunday.
(日曜始まりのほぼ日手帳もあります)
Thank you for introducing Japanese stationery.

ive been bullet journaling in the midori dot and grid paper notebooks for a year now and the paper quality is just on a completely different level. the notebook is so light and sturdy and writing and sketching on the smooth rice paper feels brilliant. i can never go back to another paper for my journals.
Love my jibun techo. The b6 slim size is ideal to me: not too big, not too small. It is the only pre-printed planner I found that has everything I need without a bunch of stuff I don't use. I do a bit of customization to some of the lists to make them what I need, but not much. I use every page of my jibun by the end of the year. I even use the instruction pages for art journaling.
I like the planners mostly because it starts the week on Monday. I always thought a Monday start felt better than a Sunday start
I've always used American planners and I find them helpful lol they actually sell a lot of minimalist ones at target and stuff. I just use them to create a calendar of my assignments and a daily to-do list.. never found it to be a hassle or anything. Like I wouldn't go out of my way to order a Japanese planner where I feel a minimalist American one does the same thing
I just got a school planner and it has thick paper, vertical columns for each day with 8 sections so I can use one for each class, and another one for extras. It also starts in Monday, with Saturday and Sunday having their own space at the bottom of the page. Been using it with no problem. It’s pretty big, but then again, I only take it to school.
Oh I love how midori md day 1 diary looks on the outside because it's like a cute soft cover book but I prefer the pages from other midori md diary products😭...
100 x yes 🙌🏾!!!!! Monday start! Simplicity! Grid Pages!
i just ordered a midori pocket diary cat planner (and a few other things) a few days ago, im super excited to get it :D
::makes it life's mission to find Midori cat planner:: 😸
Love the Hobonichi Techo Planner, I just wish they would make the English version in A5.
I’m really curious about your German planners.
I am in love with my moleskin planner I have
Could you do a more in-depth video on Japanese planners and their features?
Love the look of these planners, but need a Sunday start because it's the first day of my work week.
I went many years using the Moleskine planner. Now I’m using the 2021 Traveler’s Notebook weekly. I’ve seen that you can fit (with gaps) the Hobonichi weeks into the cover. I’m kinda torn.
Ok the one that tracks the weather and emotions and what you eat in a day WOULD BE PERFECT FOR ME
As a Japanese person who grew up with this paper quality thinking that's the baseline then moved overseas when 26, I've been struggling to change my mindset to "paying extra money to get a basic quality paper" 😂 Though the variety and pricing of cheeses balance it out!
honestly switching to a monday start system has changed my life
I’m not American but I would say I prefer the American version!! Idk but it makes me a hundred times more motivated to keep on planning my life 😍♥️
Planning in the Jibun Techo Biz for Personal 2022 and Wonderland 222 for Work. I don't diary/journal. Just need to plan and note things down. Keeping a separate notebook (Ito Bindery A5 slim to work with the Jibun Techo.
I've had a lot of the Hobonichi range and I really rate them, currently i'm using a day free which is perfect for my needs. Plus they do the cutest covers (not cheap mind) I have it in the cutest Animal Crossing cover right now!
i remember using french planners as a kid and i miss them , they were great
I use whiteboard as planner instead of book since it made me easier to look and money saving
I only use book to jot down any ideas or information i got for a project so that i can reread them again later
Most notebooks i have i used for drawings, calligraphy and craft books😂😂
I don't want to be that person, but a slightly more expensive minimalist planner at Target is pretty much exactly the same as some of the Japanese planners being shown. Like, mine has a section on each day for mood, water intake, weather, etc. It even has a back bullet section. I think planners are mostly a "how much are you willing to pay" item...
As a hospital worker I was always frustrated with the Sunday start. If I worked the weekend it was BOTH days and that is harder to see with a Sunday start calendar.
I'm from Brazil, and I believe that here, we use a mix of different Japanese planners' style. Non dated pages, thick pages and smaller sizes and Monday start
I’m from Brazil and me and the ppl Ik have been using the American version for a long time lmfao
Brazil is diverse in the most random topics then we can never generalize ahahahh
I spotted one more difference in the Midori MD Diary. The schedule is in a 24-hour format. I personally like that better, but I bet that would drive a lot of people nuts, so I think it's worth mentioning.
Watching this is making me want to buy a Japanese planner when I already bought a planner for this year 😭
I use the Michael Hyatt Full Focus planner. It has Monday starts too. I use a thin strip of washi tape to make the distinction and have it stand out that I’m on Saturday and Sunday, not Friday and Saturday 😉
I definitely prefer japanese stationery! I love my new Hobonichi planner i got from Jetpens
Would seriously LOVE it if you could link the pens used in this video! Love to see pens in action before purchasing them 💕
Thank you
the muji one is my favorite but i'll definitely consider one of these
thinking of getting the daily hobonichi techo planner!
i rlly like the colors more, its so hard to get simple planners that i can actually write my own stuff on
honestly thinking about getting one. you are right. American planners might have prompts but are very messy and the paper quality makes you not even want to use it. i’ll still think about it but i honestly can’t wait it get one
Is it just me who gets crazy anxious even thinking about planning my whole week but loves to binge watch planner videos
i need a sunday start version :'o
The paper quality!!! Obviously, even the cheap one you buy from 100yen shop is great enough!!
When it comes to stationery, NO ONE beats the Japanese!
@@calisongbird 😂😂😂 auto-correct got me!
I picked mine- a Mother themed A6 Hobonichi Techo
I'm glad i finally found a proper planner which starts with monday and even has good paper i want them but it'll be a waste of money as i cant follow through...
yes
Helpp: I wanted a mixed media sketchbook in the moleskine/leuchttrum journal style of book- I was looking into the Leuchttrum sketchbook and the Moleskine one too but apparently the pages are bleedproof- it will appear on the back of the pages… 🤔 any good suggestions?
So happy to see my favorite author get mentioned! Always knew the people at JetPens had excellent taste!
GNU Terry Pratchett
I was curious about this. I picked up a planner while traveling abroad in China and couldn’t peg why I liked it better and how that affected choosing planners since… and this video outlined it all. 😂 the Sunday start does make more sense for me. The quality of paper enhances the aesthetic of paper planning that I enjoy and the simplicity of the pages keeps me focused on what’s important. I keep a sketchbook separately for doodles and drawing. I don’t feel the need for them in my calendar. Glad there’s something for everyone !
I prefer the "spread" style of My Franklin Planner.
2 - pages Per day. Left side tasks & appointments; right side notes. It is perfect for my use-case.
That being said, the paper quality is that of standard copy paper. I supplement it with the Kokuyo Campus Diary (free), & the Hobonichi 5-Year Techo.
Yes
Great work friend 👍😃beautiful😃😃....
Yes. Easy question.
planners never work out for me but youre making it seem so cool ;-;
Imma have to get me one of these for next year because I’m starting college and am in desperate need of organisation
Love the Hobonichi A6 and am so glad that you carry some, buying from the Hobonichi store always triggers my banks fraud prevention thing (even though I buy stuff from japan alllllllllll the time) making me have to call in to get my card to work again and as an Autistic that’s a nightmare, means tracking down all the extra accessories pretty hard to impossible to do.
Great!
I would get a daily planner for next year. Not sure which one just yet.
Unrelated but that silver clock I’ve been looking it everywhere haven’t got the chance to find one yet uwu
We so need a part 2! Lol
My jobs pay roll and scheduling is all Monday start so Japanese planers mesh well in my head. But can we give hobonichi a nod for the tiny graph?? 😍
Yeesss! One of my favorite parts.
What is the US planner used for comparison?
Any of my planners needs to begin with Monday... maybe because I'm french and for us, the beginning of the week is Monday 😅😅😅
Love my Hobonichi Cousin!
