- February 4th at Mavericks saw a divine lineup greeted by seasoned veterans and newcomers alike. During its finest hours, the NorCal beast produced huge barrels, deep drops, and plenty of heavy wipeouts, the best images of which you can see right here. That is some of the gnarliest surfing I ever seen! This wave on this day looks so incredibly clean but scary, pitching so hard, beyond my comprehension. Just the take off, the drop, and riding that wave so powerful and fast on suck a big heavy board must feel incredible, not to mention that barrel ride. The guy on that flat rockered blue board just free fell about 30 feet down and stuck it, sort of, but then went over the front of his board and got detonated. These guys have the steel nerves of super high courage. If they were doing this stuff way back when there where no jackets or jet skis, this footage would be in every surf flick, the world over. Incredible!!!!

This is one of the craziest surf clips ever made. Not sure I've seen a heavier wipeout reel especially from just 1 day. It's mind blowing that this many people charge on such heavy days. For me personally it gets Sketchy at DOH, I truly can't believe they can take wipeouts like these and not drown. The impact would knock all the wind out of you and then god knows how long you would be getting mangled underwater. Unreal
If this was early Mavericks without the jetskies

Man...this is a unique pice of cinematography...I had never seen this point of view...It's the best film that has been shoot in Mavericks ever!
Apparently shot from the military base....hard to get access there....most footage is from the channel....this really shows the power of Mavericks

This is the best wipeouts video that i have ever seen, in terrible conditions, and the wipeout of Benjamin Sanchis in Nazare at 2015 was the biggest wipeout that i have ever seen

Watching this vid is some big power wave with that air drop,acid drop move at the top just to get going wow,best surfing I seen at mavs was Shane Dorian I believe riding barrels and pipe,I never seen any body,or footage of any one riding pipe like Shane he was all fired up and hitting on all cylinders,what's he eat ,his diet I'll take two of every thing.wow,this was big and breeze no box of chocolates,just to get a clean drop..
Still a place where you MUST KNOW YOURSELF....THEN... the ocean will decide if you stay...or fail!

The guy at 1:22 and 1:54 looks like he was able to handle the drop better with his shorter board. It seems sometime those huge boards are so unwieldy and tough to control. The best drops I have seen is when the surfers are able to get under that ledge that is like 5 to 7 feet from the lip where the takeoff is not as critical as the one that drop in from the very top of the wave. It seems under that ledge it kind of eliminates that air drop because when taking off at the very top it is over vertical.

As i only surfed once on wayyyyy smaller waves. Could someone explain what happens if a surfer falls on such a wave? Is s/he being under water for a long time? Is he smashed to the seabed?
Marten Sytema they're held down in a white hell for up to 5 minutes, there's a hole in the reef at mavericks that kills some people if they get stuck down there. And even when they finally gasp for air at the surface, they'll most likely see the next wave smashing down on them causing a multi wave hold down. Mavericks is notorious for killing surfers, even the most experienced professional big wave riders have met their fate there.
