I was on the crew that built the first 10 F18 Prototypes for Northrop at the Hawthorne California plant in 1978. All great people on that crew. None of us knew then that the F18 would still be in service as a great Aircraft over 4 DECADES later. Haven't seen any of those guys in the last 30 years, but am sure they are proud too.

@@marcelbork92 No when that project was done, Northrop was building a new manufacturing plant in El Segundo for the actual production line of the F18's. It was a few months out, so I got a job offer on the Lockheed F117 prototypes being built at Burbank Skunk Works. A big deal in those days when the word actually got around and people worked together. Knew quite a few people at Northrop, Lockheed, and Rockwell. So when the F117 prototypes were done, ended up at Rockwell on the B1-A Bomber Flight Test Program at Edwards Air Force Base. Both of those first 2 Bombers were fully operational.
So that was different than building prototypes that were not operational and with many new challenges. But the old guys out there were great to work with!!! Funny too with all kinds of old jokes, but they all knew their trade extremely well. Back in those days if you helped them guys out they would teach you like no one else can, if they knew you were serious to learn it all. The B1-A at Edwards was the best job of them all. There are none out there today like that job was.

Chipping away at racial, gender, religious, cultural and ideological differences, and rewarding laziness. I served in the military in the Army and can state that america and americans at their greatest exist when people from all walks of life come together with a common mission, put their differences aside to get the job done, and work ethic and character are recognized and rewarded as an example for others to follow. I wish more people in this country could have had the experience I had by serving their country. Looking back on it, it was truly a privilege more than anything else.

There is so much to these mighty ships, even with 800 working days aboard, I feel like I barely scratched the surface of her complexity. BTW, Connie was very well maintained propulsion-wise, and made a Subic Bay, Philippines to Yokuska, Japan flat-out high speed run, reaching 36.2 Kts. Picture a rooster tail flying off the screws that was about 300+' long and 125' high. For some reason that top speed was classified for many years.

When I was in the Navy in the 70's the Russians hadn't quite figured out how to do under replenishment (UNREP) so they was always a Russian ship following us to figure out how we did it. At the time they would have to go into a safe harbor to refuel or replenish supplies and they refueled anchored and in tandem, i.e., the fuel line is passed from fantail to bow. I don't know how they replenished supplies; probably by small boat.
We also passed personnel ship to ship this same way; like on Sundays the chaplains would come aboard on a high chair this way. If they were lucky they'd came across dry.

Combine that with hypersonic missles, with 2500 mile range, (fighters range is under 500 miles ) and it becomes apparent 6K men and a 6-13 Billion dollar singular vessel could all perish in a moments time.
