Why I Stopped Wearing Wigs

  • This video is about why I stopped wearing wigs!
Now, just to be clear, I am SURE i will wear wigs again in the future or maybe clips ins. I am a hair blogger after all but I needed a break! People thought that I would cover up my short hair soon after cutting it but, truth be told, I haven't had that urge! The thing is, wigs are beautiful and I love them BUT I want to show the world my OWN beauty. I don't want to hid it.
What do you think about wigs? I don't always find the best words to express myself but let's continue the conversation below! xo

Totally relate to this video. Was a wigaholic for years until I realized that I didn’t feel pretty or like I looked right without wigs. Like you, I began to feel like my thin, fine natural hair didn’t look the way I wanted it to look. I decided to quit cold turkey for a year to force myself to confront my face and my hair. That was 4 years ago and I haven’t gone back to wigs. I don’t have a “I stopped wearing wigs and now my hair is waist length” testimony. However, my edges have grown back in and now I’m reconciled with my hair as it grows from my head.

I really like your story!! :)) I feel the same, I've started wearing my hair natural & I don't want to be obsessed with it (products, length check etc), but yes just want to enjoy and be reconciled to it as it's been in weaves, braids etc for so long.

Any advice on how I can wear my hair while my edges are growing back from wearing frontals? I want to lose the wig, I do have hair, but my hairline is thin due to the friction of 3 years of frontals.... How did you wear your hair the 1st few months?

    • @mimiluau
      @mimiluau Před 6 lety +3

Kysha Hampton I did a lot of styles with bangs and forward bouffants, pinning them in such a way to hide my thin edges. Eventually it got to a point that I really didn’t care and just wore my edges the way they are. But if it’s significantly bad, they sell the hair fibers/powder (I know there’s an easily accessible brand called Toppik (NaturalMe4C on YT used it when her hair was thinning there is a higher end brand called Grace Microfibers that a trichologist I follow on Instagram recommends) that make your edges look fuller whilst they grow out without requiring too much manipulation, allowing you to do whatever style you want.

My true struggle was with hair extensions, not wigs. I have tried everything from sew-ins to kinky twists to crochet. The sew-ins looked awful and so fake, yet I wore them to get past my awkward phase after someone commented on how much better I look with them. After the awkward phase I was still addicted to extensions, but I wore kinky twists and box braids. Whenever I would take a break from the braids I felt so ugly. My real hair looked too thin and it shrunk up too short. It was tangled and knotted. I literally cried one detangling session, I was so exhausted with my 4c hair. I mean without the extensions, my whole personality would change. I was shy and soft spoken, instead of my usual upbeat self. I wouldn't go out with friends on those weekends. When the extensions were back in, I felt beautiful and sassy again. It was not a good place for my self esteem to be in. I finally broke the cycle two weeks ago and decided to loc my hair. Now I fall in love with my reflection everyday

@@radiantshay2146 I don't wear wigs because I sweat in my scalp and I would not be able to take it. But they do look nice. For the longest time I couldn't tell whether it was someone's real hair or not. I saw braids with the scalp showing and baby hair and figured how can that be fake. Finally I started seeing one too many with the same type of baby hairs and I looked up wigs and baby hair and found out how it was done lol. But women don't like to admit they just like the look of the hair. Instead they say it's to protect their hair and to let it grow. But then I see how the edges are all broken off. Its ok if you like the way it looks and it makes you happy. Just maybe find a way to do it where its not breaking off your hair. Maybe switch it up sometimes and do a weave or clip ins or something. Why get defensive about it and try to make it seem like your only wearing them for protective reasons.

Also, i'm glad you are one less 4c youtuber wearing long, straight wigs, and/or weaves, for the time being. Not trying to offend anyone, but it is disappointing that a lot of 4c gals have like one or two videos with their natural hair, and/or maybe braids, but the rest of their videos is full of them wearing the straightest wigs and/or weaves possible. I hardly see any other textures do this as much as 4c. Anyways, glad you are giving it a break for the time being, but hey, if you pick it back up, you pick it back, I'll still watch lol

byoung4eva1, I liked her video, but just as she made a choice not to wear wigs , I think others that wear them is also a choice. There is no right or wrong. Why should someone be condemned for choosing to wear their own hair chemically free or a wig. There are people that prefer chemicals in their hair because they don't like the looks of course hair. Again, that is the choice of the individual. Everything isn't for everyone.

    • @byoung4eva1

+It's My Life I don't think wearing one's own hair is something they are "condemned" to do. Yes, everyone has a choice, but it is indeed WRONG to expose our bodies to chemical relaxers. It is indeed WRONG as to why relaxers are marketed heavily to black ppl, and not checked by the FDA. It is, indeed, WRONG, why many black ppl didn't like their natural hair in the first place due to brainwashing beginning since the days of slavery, and passed down for generation. It is, indeed, WRONG as to why so many black women are walking around with the straightest weave possible, yet you see no other race of woman walking around with afro textured weaves. I agree, everyone has a choice with what they want to do with their hair, but i'm not gonna sugar coat/simplify the reasons why we do these things in the first place. I like the video as well : )

When I went into work the next day, the one black guy in the office made it a point to compliment me in front of everyone, "You look REALLY good like this. You should wear your hair like this MUCH more often. Like you really should."

I’ve never worn wigs, but I’ve worn sew ins twice before and I stopped because of a lot of the sentiments you expressed in this video, the number one being not recognizing myself. I thought I looked very strange. I, too, believe that I am at my best with my natural hair. Wash day is a pain sometimes, but ironically it’s one of my favorite days because I just love giving my hair TLC and watching it flourish. If i do go for a style that requires extensions, I go for more Afrocentric looks like braids, twists, cornrows.

It takes courage to wear your natural hair out, especially if you cut it short to a TWA. I started off with shaving all of my relaxed hair when I went natural and it’s been an interesting yet fun journey since then and now I have a TWA that absolutely love! If I was to start wearing wigs again, I would also wear a wig that’s close to my natural textured hair, it just makes sense. Great video! Love your hair btw!❤️

Sharon, Pierre Louis, do you beautiful! Don't be on the fence about something thats working for you. All wigs aren't heavy and hot, nor does all wigs cause hair breakage because they're made differently. Stocking caps prevent hair breakage and removing the wig before bed allows hair and scalp to breathe. This helps with hair growth. I'm a former hairstylist. I was deep into the care of the hair and scalp. Due to the fact you remove the wig and care for your hair is awesome . Not to mention there are people suffering form hair loss , due to illness or alopecia. Alopecia isn't all caused by not taking care of your hair. It can be hereditary . With this being said, continue to do whats best for you. I respect anyone that does whats best for them without condemning others.

I can kind of relate to this when it comes to braids (attachment). I used to “hide behind” braids (never really liked my hair and I felt insecure😬) and I was always thinking about my next style. Literally after taking it down (after having it in for like 5 months 😂) I would wait a day or two and then get braids it. Right now I’m taking a break for about a year or so (I’m starting to really like my hair a lot more). The urge to get braids comes back when I see others wearing braids (especially if it’s a cute style).

If I have a daughter , I will warn her of them😂. Stay away from wigs and weaves. Love your own hair. Unless you have a medical condition , why oh why destroy you own hair. I wish I know then what I have learnt now. Another thing, my sister who has same thick hair as me, never in her life has she worn a wig or weave, yet her hair is amazing healthy. I’ve worn wigs braids relaxers and am currently natural.
    I’m debating about texlaxing.
Natural hair is cute but I’m not gonna lie I felt a lot sexier and more attractive with straight hair or relaxed hair or a fly wig. It takes a lot of courage to wear 4c hair, as beautiful as it is; I’m also 4c.
I feel people should wear their hair how they want. However when wearing wigs we must know this is not our hair.
Sometimes I notice women get overly attached to the wig or weave...like it’s not authentically our hair but we wear them to assimilate.

I'm with you on wearing your own natural hair. One day I got tired of buying fake hair to braid into my hair. I found it to be expensive, and when product is applied to my hair it not o m ly goes to my hair, but the fake hair as well. Anytime I wore braids, my natural hair would grow through the synthetic hair. It always looked terrible after 1 month.
When I serious became tired of fake hair, I saw my hair in a new light.
I really discovered how beautiful my natural African American hair really is. I live managing it. I have a routine that's working for me at the moment. And I keep my ends trimmed and I stay hydrated. I live the coils, texture, and the thickness. I apy water before I use products on my hair. This process makes my hair a o manageable. I love the feel of my hair. So happy to be African American. My hair is lovely.

I agree with everything that you mentioned they make you feel not like yourself that's one reason why I stopped too besides it was taking my hair out in the front. I started using rice water to grow my hair back and I'm feeling much better about my hair and myself when I look in the mirror I see the real me. Beautiful me!

My head is so big. I big chopped for the fourth time and I'm not feeling it. Every compliment I get feels fake. But I'm trying to stay away 😭 ugh edit: thank you so much! I seriously can relate to this so much!

Thank you for this video! I have contemplated wearing a wig but haven't taken the plunge. I am glad you shared those experiences/feelings you had about your natural hair when consistently wearing wigs. It also sends a message to others about how we may feel about our hair. Just a thought. I will share this video with my daughter as she has mentioned extensions and I think your perspective is valuable to young people who struggle with this issue of natural self vs weaves and wigs!

Already making up my mind to stop wearing them. Paid for a bone straight wig which I’ll be getting soon and already realizing I really spent so much on that. I mean I’m still a student and these wigs are expensive to me. There should be no pressure. I have nice natural hair which I would rather maintain better instead.

I stopped wearing wigs for over 4 years now. I just recently brought one. I told myself the same thing. If it's not something that's close to my hair texture. Then it's staying on the shelf. That includes clip ins as well. Best decision I could of ever made when it comes to buying wigs. Tyfs great video.

You’re absolutely beautiful without a wig or weave. ☺️
I personally have ditched the dye, weaves, and chemicals, going completely natural and using as much natural products as possible (i.e. coconut oil, apple cider vinegar as a rinse, baking soda as a shampoo, egg yolk as a shampoo, tea as hair rinse, etc.). The remaining dyed hair is growing out nicely and my hair is much more healthy now. It also grows faster.
