  • Welcome to 4K Motoring!
    We are making progress with the daily driver 2001 Corvette! Among the hottest days of the year so far, we found a problem with the dual-zone climate control! The A/C was blowing nice and cold on the driver's side, but had nothing but heat on the passenger's side! After some research, it appears the blend door actuators are a common point of failure with plastic inner gears that crack. To access them, the dash must come out! Now, this is not as scary as it sounds! Follow along and you too can tackle this project with only simple hand tools!

      Practice definitely makes a difference! As I said, there's nothing truly difficult about the job, just a tedious process

    Had that issue when I first bought my 1999 C5 at 69,000, but actually I noticed a few later after continued use, it started working on its own. No problem since!. 4 years now & it's works fine.

      That's good news! Looking at the failed gear, I would be shocked if there wasn't a brass replacement available somewhere

    Great video. You have bigger balls than I do. I cringe thinking about tearing a dash out. I'll remember this video if I ever have to rip into mine. I appreciate your C5 vids.

      Any info on the theoretical way of doing the driver's side without removing the dash?

    • @4KMotoring
      @4KMotoring  Před rokem +1

      It is technically reachable from under the dash on the driver's side by removing the bottom trim plate... But it will have to be done completely by feel in the dark... I would just remove the dash

    Great video. Been watching you, and been subscribed to you since you have had under 200 subscribers. Please keep posting C5 videos, you do great work! One weird question, why do you always say "we" Its just you right? Are there other people at 4K motoring?

      Thanks for hanging in there!
      The channel has been through a few phases. There have been a couple people involved at different points (some behind camera), so I feel that saying "we" is more true to the channel as a whole

      Nope, the didn't look too bad. That said, I doubt this will be the last time I'll have the dash out of the car.

    Don't know if you can answer this or not but my 2000 with dual climate seems to be weak with the air. I got a cfm meter on ebay and I'm running about 475cfm at the front vent. I just did a test and regardless of the mode, vent, floor, vent & floor and floor def, all the vents blow air. I would think if I put it in vent mode, the floor and def would not have any air. No error codes and the air blows 48 degrees out of all vents when running. Any thoughts? I even did the blend door calibration. Weak air flow could be from all the vents being open?

    • @4KMotoring
      @4KMotoring  Před 11 měsíci

      I'm actually facing the same issue and working on a video for it. The vent controls are vacuum operated and there seems to be a common failure point of the vacuum line behind the battery. As soon as I get to the bottom of it I'll have a video out about it

    • @nyernga
      @nyernga Před 11 měsíci

      @@4KMotoring I'm looking at a pic of the vacuum canister and the lines to and from it now. I'll have my mechanic with a smoke machine see if he can find the culprit. I'll also keep you posted.

    What about the door or valve that controls the HVAC's fresh air versus recirculated cabin air? Where is that, and can it be replaced? I believe mine is trashed because whenever I'm at a traffic light behind a truck or bus, and my HVAC is in recirc mode, I smell exhaust coming into my car. So I have to turn off the air conditioner until the traffic light turns green. I've owned my C5 for eight years, and this particular problem just started last month.

    • @4KMotoring
      @4KMotoring  Před 11 měsíci

      Does your car still switch vent outputs between defrost and dash vents? Or does everything blow at once? Commonly, a vacuum line failure leads to all of these problems, I should have a video coming soon speaking about it. Vacuum actuators themselves rarely if ever go out

    • @JustSayN2O
      @JustSayN2O Před 11 měsíci

      Thank you for replying, and yes it does switch between defrost and dash vents. Even with dash vents, a very small amount of air blows up the defrost vent, causing condensation on the front window's exterior, which is a nuisance. But it's done that since I purchased this 2003 Corvette in 2015. The inability to only recirculate HVAC air suddenly began about a month ago.

    Looking to change the Actuators on my 98 C5. Are the Gears in the ones you replaced Plastic to Plastic instead of the Plastic Gear to the Metal Spindle?

    Will low Freon effect the function of the blend doors? I have replaced my doors, but still getting codes, and doors are not spinning. Thanks.

    • @4KMotoring
      @4KMotoring  Před měsícem +1

      Unfortunately, that's a completed answer. Is your ambient temperature displaying correctly? My exterior temperature sensor was not allowing the AC to engage.
      There are relearn procedures for the HVAC control that must sometimes be followed. Sometimes low Freon could be the culprit.
