    What would you want your hearing service dog to be able to do for you?

      I would love to never hear "nevermind" again just because I didn't hear them calling my name. Alerting me to my name is one of the top things for me. Another one is that I almost got hit by a car in college, so alerting to cars would be wonderful.

      Thank you for this! I need a dog to walk with me. I’m sedentary because I can’t hear my surroundings well and I live in Alaska, where I have to be aware of moose and bad guys. I was deafened on my left side due to a brain tumor removal/placement on facial and part of ear nerve. I hope I’d be eligible for such a gift!

      Hi Tiara!! I am so with you on hearing “never mind” again! The name call alert has been a game changer for me! Please let me know if you have any questions or have any topics you would like for me to cover!

      @@hearinglauren I would love to see you teach helpful signs for different situations!
      For example, when I was a manager for a nicer restaurant and I can't tell you how many times I wished that my co-workers knew basic signs! I don't know much sign language (I "rebelled" against being HOH/sick and just wanted to pretend to be "normal"), but I tried SOOO many times to sign "ketchup" or "fork" to someone. They wouldn't understand, so I would have to cross the entire restaurant to tell them what I was trying to say OR just get it myself even though I am balancing 12 different things at once haha. I still have server nightmares and it's been almost 3 years! I would LOVE for basic signs to be incorporated into server training - not only does it help us communicate faster and more clearly in a loud setting, but it might be helpful for customers who use sign language!
      Another situation: You're at a loud concert with your girls and you want some water or to go to the bathroom. Instead of trying to scream it into each other's ears and still maybe not understanding, just go over basic signs before you go so you can use those signs to ease communication!

    After I was matched with my Hearing Dog and taught her to alert me to the bus, I never missed another one. I'm hard of hearing so there is a lot I miss. I love CCI and met her puppy raisers. I sit here smiling as I write this. CCI is more than wonderful - beyond superb - can't say enough good things about them. I was matched with exactly, precisely the right dog for me.

    Sounds very similar to the experience at Paws With A Cause. That’s where I got my hearing dog. Everything you said is very similar to how PAWS does it.

    I just submitted the first section of the application for a hearing dog! I have been thinking about it for years and today, I finally started the process. :) [I am profoundly hard of hearing bilaterally due to platinum-based chemotherapies; I am legally deaf, so sometimes I call myself deaf even though I can hear some things.]

    A friend of mine has an assistant Dog from Canine Companions and they are a great team. I’m glad that you have a good match. Does your dog know how to retrieve the key when you drop them?

    The video was exactly what you promised and that is great. I am always interested to know how other people experience life because that means they can be creative and intelligent in away that I am not which means a learning opportunity. And the hearing service dog is a good example of that. Looking forward to the next video.

    My brother has been blessed with two Skilled Companion Service Dogs through Canine Companions for Independence. I have also been looking into getting my own service dog through the organization (I have hearing loss, too). Do you have your dog with you all day or just for part of the day? Thank you!

    Thank you for such an informative video! I was born with moderate-sever hearing loss in both ears. I now have severe hearing loss and a cochlear implant and a hearing aid. I can’t apply until this October when I turn 18, however I start college the fall of 2022 and I would NEED the dog by then bc I’m going out of state and need to be able to wake up to alarms. Is there a typical time line? And is there a way to speed up the process if it is needed?

    • @hearinglauren
      @hearinglauren  Před 3 lety

      Hi Maya! The typical timeline to receive a dog from Canine Companions for Independence is about a year to a year and half! Unfortunately there is not a way to speed up the process!

    Can you get a hearing dog during college/graduate school, because the website at least 18 and in a stable home environmen?

    • @hearinglauren
      @hearinglauren  Před 3 lety +1

      Yes! I got mine when I was in college! They just want to know that you are staying in the same city/area to assign a graduate coordinator. They also want to know that the dog is well taken care of and is going to a healthy household! I hope this helps!

      @@hearinglauren I'm sorry for asking so many questions, but do you think you can do a video on your college experience, did elroy attend class with you, did you talk to anybody to let him in class? Did you have a dorm, how did that work. Ect.
