- How the pros cut grass to perfection | Tournament prep at Irish championship golf club
Today we are at Belvoir Park Golf course to find out what it takes to run a modern day golf course and how to set up for Tournament prep, Belvoir Park is a parkland Irish championship golf level club having hosted the Irish Open. I met up with Aaron Small the course manager for behind the scenes on how the course is prepared for Tournament prep.
Belvoir Park Golf club was running a scratch cup and Aaron invited me down to film the course getting set up for the scratch golf competition, he and his staff were in on a Saturday evening getting the course cut, they were there well into the dark before finishing and then there the following morning very early. I didn't join them until 7 am on Sunday morning.
How the course is prepared for Tournament prep
How to stripe the grass
What height the greens are cut at
How to achieve low heights of cut
How to feed a golf green
How to measure greens speed with a stimpmeter
How to increase greens speed
Golf course maintenance
This the first in a series of videos filmed at Belvoir Park Golf Club, in future videos we will be covering the costs behind running a busy golf course, machinery, and the costs involved in running a busy modern-day golf course. The series will feature golf course construction with golf architect William Swan from Swan Golf Designs and CRL (Clive Richardson Limited).

Said it before & I’ll say it again..... as a former head Greenkeeper/ mechanic this content is a brilliant insight into the industry. Well done Robbie. Superb my friend 👏🏻👍🏻
Thank you :)
Yes and No, you can show people what we do and how we do it but they dont know why, especially anything to do with chemicals or the maintenance practices we preform. If someone wants a putting green or extremely tight fairway for a lawn which isnt hard to do but they will still need to d I certain things and why we do it. Number 1 issue I see with home lawns is leveling, they put down way to much sand at once and continue to do so overtime, this will leading to layering in the soil down the road, punching holes at the same depth over and over also will lead to layering, we punch holes from 10 to 12 inches deep up to 3 inches deep to prevent that and countless other reasons. Micro and macronutrients in your soil is just as important as anything else. Most of this doesnt apply to people who have normal lawns cut higher without turf grass. Controlling excess thatch, proper watering, always water longer instead of watering a little each day this causes short roots. Spraying chemicals can be a challenge, you need to know math and calibrate the sprayer, spraying not enough is a waste, to much can cause big problems, washing a sprayer out is just as important. Showing people or just telling someone really isnt enough until they know why and how, most people with these golf course lawns go the extra mile and learn this, lots dont and waste money, they believe its just water and fertilizer, mow when it gets tall when everything should have a schedule

So much more to it than you think. I’m a member of a golf club and this makes me appreciate the job done by the green team. I wouldn’t want 45000 people on my lawn every year!
Yes, its a busy course. Though it also generates a lot of money at over £100 a round. The final video of the series is about how much they spend every year on the course
Interesting to see what the professionals do to prep a course
Thanks lewis 😁
Looks like a fabulous club. Great maintenance.
Hey Steve, if you like this. I also filmed another video here too czcams.com/video/V6u4mDTtMD8/video.html
What a beautifully presented course. No wonder so many good golfers have come out of Belvoir Park over the years. As others have stated here, greenkeepers are the unsung heroes of golf, but when we are struggling to keep our tiny little lawns in shape we begin to appreciate what they do every week in all sorts of weathers.
Tony 💯 percent
Very interesting look! Not enough of this content on CZcams imo. Thanks for posting this
Thanks, Andy, another two videos to follow this on 😁👍
Wow!
So satifying to watch...
👍👍👍👍👍
As a green keeper in new zealand, I totally agree with you, about the weather controls most maintenance. Your course looks great.
Cracking video, Greenskeepers are the unsung heroes of golf.
Hi Andrew, 100%
I was a green keeper for 20 years before starting my own business
I am just starting out as a greenkeeper and these videos are brilliant from the perspective of head greenkeepers to ensure we understand what is expected of us as we work our hardest to bring a brilliant looking course to golf club members. Lovely work 🤘🏻
Thank you 😁 👍
I got a slow jack and ball rub on the course by the edges of the woods, she sure made it feel like a warm friendly hand made my knees buckled 🤣
What about ya! Incredible footage, how amazing are those big mowers under lights.
It was dark once some of that was getting filmed
Fantastic stuff.
Really informative.
Great addition to the channel Robbie.
Cheers, Neil
Thanks Neil, bit of a busmans holiday for me with this
@@Premier_lawns_official The best kind of holiday. Ha ha. Will forward this to a friend who is the manager of a local golf club.
It so speaks his language.
@@colliegardenmaintenance2560 good man, there are another two videos to go with this one!
Course manager in England here, fantastic video and beautiful set up.
We should do more vids like this as even golfers have no idea the work that goes into a course for one days event.
Hi J
I have more videos filmed at some nice tracks here in NI, I don't think there is anything else like this series on CZcams.

The busiest course in Michigan does 56,000 rounds

00:07:10 thought I was watch a bowling match 😊. Always good to watch
Thanks
Have you used horticultural grade molasses. Works wonders to green my pot. It's sugar. We use the sugar to feed michorrizea innoculations to improve root structure and break down thatch. I put it in my garden, and lawn once and it grows amazing
every thing nice cutting.
I really enjoy these videos
Another one tomorrow evening Ron 👍😁👇
@@Premier_lawns_official can't wait
Keep up the great videos Robbie
Thanks Greg ❤
Very interesting.
Thanks David 👍
Brilliant thank you Robbie
Cheers Dave 😁👍
Very interesting & wonderfully cinematic too
Thanks ❤😁
Wow that’s a lot of work. A great video hope all is good mate
Thanks Mick, going back to my roots.
Great Video Robbie
❤👍😁
Great stuff Robbie 👏
Bit different from a lawn that's for sure
Interesting stuff Robbie. Nice quality of footage too. That roller looks like good fun. Maybe before having lunch 🤣
Charge Mrs Jones an extra £20 for rolling the grass 😛
i work at a golf course... why do i need to watch this LOL
So did I for 20 years, here are a few more golf course videos czcams.com/play/PLV0W3KNEKSkJF8txug4xYkjWgEztcixRZ.html
@@Premier_lawns_official respect my man
Fabulous footage there Robbie and a fantastic insight into the course and green management. I've also noticed your photography, production of film and footage keeps getting better. I'm sure you are a photography enthusiast like myself. I can tell from the title photo! Nice into the sun/shadow shot 🎥📷👌
I didn't know anything about videos or photos before I started the channel. (Still on scratching the surface) However, I enjoying learning new things
@@Premier_lawns_official I'd definitely say you have a knack for it. It's all about the light, the best shots are at the beginning and end of the day as seen in your footage 😉
I bought a new camera. It's point and shoot and I'm still struggling haha
@@Premier_lawns_official what model? Also on the technique front, anything by Scott Kelby (books, video lessons etc) are a great source of information.

cutting greens tomorrow morning on a toro greens master. kinda nervous...
Why's that?
That course looks a beauty. I worked in China for 12 yrs. 40000 golfers + 40000 caddies...a year...lol....
Sounds fun haha 🙂
Very educational ! So by keeping the grass at 3mm, does that eliminate bagging the clippings? That roller looks like fun. Amazing stripe work.
They use a growth regulator and it reduces the clippings
Though it still needs to be collected
Looks like a beaut course
Yes, an amazing spot with a budget to match. Next video will be on machinery and the costs!
Bring it on Robbie.......
Its a very fortunate golf club with its bugets, etc. I didn't realise they have 45000 rounds a year though. That causes its own issues... i though it was only 25- 30000 rounds which would allow the greenkeepers to maintain it easier..its tough with so many golfers getting in the way😂😂😂.
Gone are the days for millionaires golf unless you head to Scotland where you find hundreds.... often links on perfect ground for golf.
3.18 the pin/flag has that PISA similarity ..as in leaning ?.
I don't understand your question
@@Premier_lawns_official The flag is not perpendicular .
In other words YOU ARE NOT a greenkeeper.. ..you just sell shit !
Heard him say there’s a budget for overtime….must be nice. Barely have the budget for 2 people for 2 courses.
That must be tough to manage
@@Premier_lawns_official lots of “volunteer” hours
@@JUSTIN-kq9br been there, done that. I was a green keeper myself for 20 years
What grass do they have on these greens? Bent?
Bent, fescue and AMG
How do they keep weeds from growing in the greens, do they use a pre-emergent?
Pre-emergents are legal in the uk. The weeds don't get a chance to grow as the sward is kept tight
@@Premier_lawns_official you mean they are illegal
@@samuelasamoah6906 ah yes. illegal
@@Premier_lawns_official really, I can't believe it, but why?
@@samuelasamoah6906 those types of products are terrible for the environment.
I've been a keeper for over 23 yrs ...the last 10 or less ,I have often wondered WHY every fairway should be cut the same .....would it not be more visually acceptable to cut in different cutting designs , pertaining to the individual holes ? eg cross-cut here, straight out Tee-to green there , links ie dark/ light here & there, wiggles& waggles here & there ..of course all depending upon par , be it 3,4,or 5 ...or is it because, THE MEMBERS DECIDE, WHAT THEY WANT , REGARDLESS OF WHAT THE HEAD GREENKEEPER DECIDES ?
Comes down to the course manager. It's all about aesthetics. Would be unmanageable letting the members decide
@@Premier_lawns_official Unfortuneatly many course Managers, don't know diggly shit about aesthectics or visual interesting comprimises, they are often just the educated financial adviser to how the CLUB can save money with excisting negative financial spending being transformed into a POSITIVE yearly return for the CLUB..who gains from this ..yeah , an interesting question ..?
PS ..How many keepers do you have employed ?
@@noprobs3393 that's not my experience, I too was a greenkeeper for 20 years
@@noprobs3393 This isn't my course... I think there are around 8 people work here
.😊👍
Hope you are well Pete
@@Premier_lawns_official
Thank you and you stay safe 😊👍
@@Pete.Ty1 You too Pete 😁
Great video Robbie. Obviously a lot goes into the work of a greenkeeper which is probably overlooked and this just scratches the surface so thank you .....those speed roller look fun !!
It's an interesting tool
Just as long as folks don't start rolling their lawns
