I like your mentality. PoE should be a build sandbox. I start melee every league until this one and I was absolutely stunned how much easier it was getting a non-melee. character leveled up. Anyway, keep doing you!
they keep nerfing skills that work, but dont do anything about the skills that dont work. so i have to conclude that ggg doesnt want any builds to work.... be careful what you wish for. the way you phrased that "lets have ggg fuck around with player power"... thats kinda like a djinn situation. they will hear you and say, ok. then, a fully geared lv 100 8 mirror build will deal 20k damage tops....

Have you tried molten strike of the zenith? I heard that one is actually playable
