i made a comment but now I don't see it....great video, glad you got the door before the summer since things take forever to get to you in PR. let the fun begin
Got lucky with this one, but I found out I couldn't use rechargeable batteries after I ordered it, buying regular batteries for me is a no go, I prep for long term SHTF, so it has to be as sustainable as possible...not sure about your missing comment, im checking out this video out now.
@@MosaicHomestead for power, we went cheap and ran an outdoor extention cord to the chicken coop, we buried it a few inches (I know you aren't supposed to do this but we did) that way we could use our house solar or generator if needed...tho truthfully when the power goes out we just go open up the doors by hand. Mr OSP made our chicken door from one of those drape (curtain) opening systems...that was the range a decade ago...so we have zero bells and whistles like your unit does...just a small power timer which turns the power on and off to open or close the door.
@@OldSchoolPrepper Here the grid is shet, so I rather have reliable sustainable power even if I have to spend a bit more, we also have the third most expensive power in the world at 34cents a Kwh, so off grid solar is the smart way to go here.
I knew these doors have been around, What I have never liked was the price, but not to add another chore to myself I decided to get one, I also don't want to buy batteries when I only use rechargeable batteries, looking into how to power it solar was worth it.
Can't read instructions I don't have, I saw a video where someone happened to mention that chicken guard doesn't recommend rechargeable batteries, then I went online looking for information, then I saw another video where someone points out a USB port in the bottom of the chicken guard, then I found a download document showing what is needed to run this chicken guard with external power, this is actually better considering I won't have to change batteries ever...The chick's will never be free, they will work hard hours in my concrete egg factory, I will barter a dozen eggs 🥚 for half that yummy Wolfie dog lol.
I see Xmas came early for ya...👍....I'm thinking heating the Chicken Bunker shouldn't be a problem in your area, however I wonder what you have in mind for Cooling and temperature regulation...Obviously I don't know much about chicken maintenance, and very much open to learning... ( 😀LOL..even tho I'm quite familar with Pigeon Coops on rooftops in my hood).
hi Felixdacat, how hot and cold does it get in your area? we heat our coop when it gets down to 10F or less..... we add a fan in the heat of the summer but don't cool it and it gets over 100F here (I'm in Oregon grow zone 8B). WE heat with a panel unit not a heat lamp...heat lamps are often broken by the birds (they peck or fly into it) then it starts fires...birds broke 2 of my bulbs last year) panels can be set for a specific temp and regulate. I can send you a video if you want on the topic. What Luis says about venting is so true...esp for the heat..you have to have ventiliation. we have the top of each wall vented for 12 inches or more the entire coop around.
@@OldSchoolPrepper I'm building some long windows similar to the ones Carolina coops build, but I'm making mine out of metal, the nest box will be made out of welded metal as well.
Do you have links you can share for the cables/solar panel/“menace” proof box? I’m trying to do the same thing with my chicken guard! Also should this generate enough power to operate the chicken guard door and a light or two?
Solar cables are...RH/ RW 10, you can get this in Rodger electric, I use RH/RW 8, its the biggest cable that a MC4 accepts, Why 8?...cuts down on resistance and about 5% more efficient...If your going to run lights, go with 12v DC lights, AC with a inverter sucks too much power, 12 v DC lights will run all night like nothing...Even with a smaller battery than the one illustrated in this video, hope this helps, feel free to ask or comment for assistance, Chicken guard has no info or videos on this topic, thats why I put this video up.
Awesome, thank you so much! There’s little to nothing out there on this and I am figuring it out as I go, so I appreciate you posting it. Looking forward to seeing the finished product!
@@mcloud98mc I built my USB Decora insert from a Leviton Decora blank and a blue sea USB, but if your building a small 12v solar setup like me, you can order a 12v magnadyne USB with 12v outlet on Amazon, Just search magnadyne and it will pop up, it comes in white and black, its 12v.
It's great that the door will run on solar power!
I'm happy too, because if this didn't work, the door wasn't getting used lol...long term prepping means buying batteries isn't a option.

I’ve had chickens for 40 years and I never even knew such a thing existed.

The coop will have ventilation windows on 3 sides and a 12v O2cool fan inside on those super hot days.
