Meatloaf was a legend. Rock-opera is his genre. Very theatrical and often hilarious.
"I'd do Anything for Love" is a great song and video. "Bat Out of Hell" is a classic. Also, his duet with Cher "Dead Ringer for Love," is a really fun tune.

Myself having done Vocals with Meat on back into paradise the Bat out of hell vocal performances are a producer in his highest form that meatloaf is one of the grand asters moments . This is a "rock opera" a subgenre of rock and roll. Meat Loaf (written as two words for the late great singer RIP), made a career out of making big productions like this - most all written by the fantastically talented Jim Steinman (RIP). In fact, if it wasn't for Meat Loaf, there may never have been a rock opera subgenre. He was the gold standard.
These two made a helluva team! Jims writing and Meat's singing was gold! Meat sang with such gusto and passion and made you FEEL every word with a sort of gusto and grit with his inflections and how he phrased things, and that dude had some pipes to deliver big belting sounds.
    Others to consider:
"Two Out Of Three Ain't Bad"
    "Heaven Can Wait"
"I Would Do Anything For Love"
    "Objects in Rear View Mirror"
    "Life is a Lemon"
"Rock And Roll Dreams Come True"

      @Lynn-kh5rs Před rokem +3

Meat Loaf was very talented and one of the greats, but as far as rock opera is concerned 'Tommy' by The Who was before 'Bat Out of Hell'. Also "Sorrow is born,'' the British band the Pretty Things entered the rock-and-roll history books in 1968 with what is generally acknowledged as the first rock opera."

Great reaction! Not many reactors get the baseball metaphor, so I'm glad you picked up on that! Meat Loaf is the man, not the band, and while this is a fun song, it doesn't show off his insane vocal range, nor the dynamism, timbre and power of his voice. Try "Bat Out of Hell", "For Crying Out Loud" or "I'd Do Anything For Love" to get the full effect. All written by the same composer as this one, Jim Steinman. All 8+ minutes long, and all with the same epic storytelling with a twist. Have fun exploring the Meat and Jim rabbit-hole! :)

Yes, that was Karla DeVito in the video. But the vocal on the recording was actually sung by Ellen Foley. Foley was also an actress and she was a part of the cast on the TV series Night Court during the 2nd season. There were some other great musicians on this recording too. Todd Rundgren was the guitarist and did background vocals as well as produce the recording, Roy Bittan (keyboards) and Max Weinberg (drummer) of the E Street Band were both on it, and Edgar Winter was the saxophonist.

The entire Bat Out of Hell album is perfection. My favorites on it are Bat Out of Hell and For Crying Out Loud, but that doesn't take anything away from the others. Then there's Anything for Love, Rock and Roll Dreams Come Through, and Hot Patootie - plus many others.
Meat Loaf was the consummate performer - he poured his heart and soul out on stage. I saw him perform maybe 10 years ago...he was well past his prime, but it was impossible to tell. He put on the same kind of show that this video depicts. The day he died, and also the day that Jim Steinman (the songwriter who wrote all the songs on all 3 Bat Out of Hell albums plus many others) died were both very sad days for music.

Keep digging into these old treasures, young man, and go back even further into the 50s and 60s as well. There is as wealth to uncover.

Long time die hard fan of Meat’s and I love watching your reaction!! I definitely think you’d enjoy a lot of his other stuff!! The videos are good too. Give “Objects in the Rearview Mirror” or “I’d Do Anything for Love” a try. I’m sure you already got asked to do Bat out of Hell lol! Thanks for doing these videos!!

Laghed so much watching you're reaction to the twists in this song, at 49 I've listened to this song countless times, it never gets old. Meatloaf was a legend who could make laugh or cry.

Hey man brand new to your channel and seeing your reaction to Paradise by the Dashboard Light convinced me we could be friends haha. Such an overlooked song and so unknown by your generation. I find it hysterical every time I hear it! You have a great ear kid keep up the great work!

  • @patriciamccormick9321

I listened to the legendary Phil Rizzuto call hundreds of Yankee games as a kid but he lives in perpetuity because of this song. Lol. His granddaughters convinced him to perform this song and I am forever grateful. .

Ha ha! My first memory of Meatloaf was of my mom buying the Bat out of Hell cd for her long awaited convertible. I was like 11 and was kinda scared of the fact the song dared to have a bad word in it (hell)! I was super sheltered.

In case nobody else has said it, Meat Loaf was the guy in the video. He was born Marvin L. Aday but was given the nickname "Meat Loaf" at an early age (partially due to his first two initials being "M.L."). He later adopted this name as his professional name. Also, in 1984 Meat legally changed his first name from "Marvin" to "Michael". Meat Loaf died earlier this year on January 20 at the age of 74.
Additionally, the woman seen singing in this video is not the woman you _hear_ singing, This video, like many others, uses the studio recording for the audio track and the studio version was recorded by Ellen Foley. However, Ellen did not tour with the band, Karla DeVito did and she is the one who appears in the video. Along these same lines, there is another Meat Loaf video with an identical situation: _"I'd Do Anything For Love (But I Won't Do That)."_ Lorraine Crosby sings the female part on the album, but Dana Patrick appears in the video. Again, the studio audio is used in that video, so you see Dana but hear Lorraine.

One of my top ten favorite rock songs RIP meatloaf. He never aspired to be a huge rock star. He was doing theater and that's what he wanted til he was heard singing in a play. Everyone was blown away by that powerhouse voice. That's what I heard anyway.

Imagine: It's the early 80s. You are in 6th grade and on a school bus full of kids ranging from Afternoon Kindergartners to Sophomores (Juniors and Seniors had their own cars.) It's 3:20pm in the afternoon and the bus has just left the high school. The bus driver pops this song on and the whole bus sings it. Guys take the guy parts. Girls take the girl parts.
Everyone did the baseball game. I still know the words by heart.
    Ahhhh... nostalgia. :)

I'm an old fart, 42yrs old, meatloafs songs were old fashioned even for me when I was growing up yet without a doubt this song is one of the best songs of all time. The song is very easy for many baby boomers and Gen Xs to relate to, the song is super funny not to mention the changes in tempo get you hooked on the story being told throughout the song. Seeing your reaction to this song made my heart smile knowing great music will continue to inspire all different types of people from all different backgrounds bringing the world closer together.

"Why is this such a vibe?"
Because Jim Steinman was a lyrical/musical god and Meat Loaf gave everything he had to this song.

I love watching young people react to this song. From okay I can deal with this, to seeing paradise,to the ballgame then to her ultimatum, his concession, to their desperation of it all to end. Always so much shock and awe and laughter. Meatloaf was a master at taking you on a voyage. I hope you do more.👍

My then High School girlfriend and I were in my car listening to this IRL. Everything was the same except we didn't get married so didn't have to deal with that. We're still friends on Facebook. 👌😎
His real name was Michael Lee Aday(RIP). He got his nickname (which has legally been changed) by his dad when he played football in High School.
He had many movie appearances over the years. Including but not limited to Rocky Horry Picture Show and Fight Club.
Btw they were BOTH regretting their commitment to each other.
This song was written by the late Jim Steinman (RIP) He also played keyboard on this song.
I wish I could have seen them in concert but sadly it never happened. 😭

Freshman year: We Meatloafed frequently during the 17 mile bus ride to high-school in the middle of a pasture. Grease cast its "cool" upon us before semester and Meatloaf sealed it... along with many others! Late 60's, the 70's and the early 80's produced the best music. There's some good today but my era owns it. Glad you're enjoying!

Most of Meat Loaf's music was written by a guy named Jim Steinmen, who was a freaking genius. He also wrote "Toyal Eclipse of the Heart," which is also a pretty bizarre vid that you might like if you haven't seen it.
