    His soul is 'blown' inside a blockflute and is amplified in a magnificent way! I wish I could be able to express myself through a blockflute like he does.

      Practice more. I'll bet that Bruggen worked pretty hard for that embouchure and the articulation.

      Brilliant? Certainly. Trail-blazing? Without a doubt. An inspiration? Certainly for me. The greatest recorder play of all times? I'd beg to differ. I don't know who is, but although he would be up there, very personally I'd rate Dan Laurin, Kristine West, Eric Bosgraaf and a few others higher.

      The whole concept of greatest recorder player of all time is ridiculous. He was a brilliant musician and virtuoso, but there are many just as good and technical standards now are far higher. Anyone who plays the instrument seriously knows that to be true. This cult of Bruggen is childish.

      It cannot be denied that Frans Brüggen was single-handedly responsible for bringing the recorder to the prominence it enjoys today. Before Brüggen, the recorder was regarded as a child's toy, not to be taken seriously. Brüggen changed all that. No one can take that accomplishment away from him.

    This performance (surely excellent!) is of the third set of van Eyck's variations, and Brüggen added the final part of the first set. Mine is a combination of the first and the second sets.

      No 😭 one has ever played that well, in my opinion... A few are close, several are great, but the "seemingly" effortless channeling of each composers intent, as if one were speaking it and with every nuance sounding natural and never contrived... This is has never been matched on any instrument... Jordi Savall runs a close second... Of course, just my opinion...

      Doen Daphne d'over schoone Maeght [When Daphne the most beautiful maid]. Modern
      recordings hive made Daphne one of the hits ol the Lust-hof, but it was a l7th-century favourite as well. The texr and tune come from a 1610s English ballad telling the classical tale of how Phoebus Apollo pursued Daphne so relentlessly that in desperation she cried our to the goddess
      Diana to tum her into a laurel tree.

    I am concerned about the control of pitch in much of this especially the consistent microtonal bend downwards and what seems to be a lot of slightly hairy overblowing and wild vibrato breadth and rate. Was he really that good compared to todays standards ?

    • @FrancisMaxino
      @FrancisMaxino Před 9 lety

      ***** Perhaps if you listen to Carl's recordings (a contemporary of this man I believe) you would hear the difference in control ? Van Eyck is an excellent beautifully unique player, but Dolmetsch, I believe, in comparison, was an absolute virtuoso...Alas I appear unable to locate any of his recordings here on CZcams, Carl was my inspiration and I still have this record...it is worth a listen, particularly Greensleeves to a Ground Bass

      Maybe I miss something... what is the relation between the discussion about Bruggen's performance (that, by the way, I find excellent) and this "fantasia"? The impact the listener receive coming from an early renaissance marsterpiece and an amatorial composition that is something between a movie soundtrack and new age piece is quite strong!
