RIDING WITH WOODEN HANDLEBARS ON MY MTB - WILL THEY SNAP?

- Riding with wooden handlebars on my MTB - Will they snap? I try to find the breaking point of these wooden handlebars by riding dirt jumps, skatepark, urban freeride and pump tracks, Is this my most ridiculous bike challenge yet?
I head to a DIY store to buy a tool with a wooden handle that I can cut into a wooden handlebar and fit to my custom dirt jump mountain bike to see if riding with wooden handlebars is possible and how long they will last before they snap! After buying the tool from B&Q I go home to do some bike maintenance and fit this piece of wood onto my bike and cut it down to the same size as my title handlebars. After fitting the new wooden bars we head out and go straight to the skatepark to get used to the feeling before throwing down some tricks to see what was possible. Once I'd landed some bangers it was time to get more crazy. Next stop was a pump track for a huge manual line before a quick illegal park of my van outside a skatepark to do the unthinkable. With more confidence in my wooden bars I hit a few urban MTB freeride lines before going into the woods and sending it way to hard. Would you ride with these bars?
I hope you enjoy the video!

“It’s just a flare but if the bars snap, you die” straight to the point 😂
Awesome as usual Sam! As a carpenter and wood nerd I can tell ya that youve got yourself a nice set of Ash handlebars. This wood is typically used for sledgehammers and axe handles due to its strength and shock absorbing properties. On closer inspection the piece you selected had straight grain with minimal run out, meaning that the wood fibres were as long as they can be giving you maximum strength. Not only that, you had the grain orientated with the annular rings 'to the sky' rather than parallel with the ground, so you can take more hits as the grain is less likely to fold and break. Clearly you knew this cause I've seen your woodworking skills ;)
But these tools break a lot anyway. Feels like they are designed to break so u buy new one 😂
@@feeleap5545 i only get rubber ones because of this. Last longer and grip nicer
@@feeleap5545 A properly made (and looked after) tool handle can last a lifetime, even getting smacked around all day. But these have attention to detail and specific characteristics that modern mass manufacturers generally just don't do. You see a lot of cheaper, less suitable woods used nowadays with very poor cuts of wood where the grain doesn't run the length of the handle, theyre full of knots and defects and have improper grain orientation which results in a lot more breakage. The average user will not notice this. These cheap tools do feel as though theyre designed to break so you have to buy a new one. Ultimately wood is a natural and imperfect material, but I think you'd be surprised just how far you can push it.
@@pablocruzgilmour Wood is the most magical thing in the world I reckon. It's imperfect ,as in it occasionally has knots and burls and breaks in the grain, but it's also the most perfect thing for what it needs to do because trees grow it when they require it and where they require it without wasting anything.
I don't think there's any way this handlebar would snap honestly. It's too thick and as you already pointed out the grain directions is absolutely perfect for the kinds of load it will be experiencing.

That's because the wood is not selected for, it's just random pieces of ash.
Has anyone else noticed Sam just casually just says, it's scary, I have no brakes and just sends bangers straight away? He is simply an epic bloke. I do wonder if Lewi was happy he didn't have to ride that set-up.
Hey Sam, i have recently lost the most important person in my life but your videos put a smile on my face. Thank you.
Sorry to hear that man!
The videos just get more amazing each time🔥, awesome ideas Sam! Love it
Agreed! Btw, if you're riding check nta helmets like xnito or bern hudson, I see a lot of people still wearing cpsc helmets which aren't really safe
another banging video from sam, these video ideas keep getting better 😂
Glad ya like them!!
Banger > Banging
the amount of ideas that this dude have is just from another world

Not a great test to rely on. Sam loves EVERYTHING. He's the Golden Retriever of pro cyclists.
Hahahahhaa
Ohh sh*t he’s in trouble 😂
I loved the part where Sam said "It's sustainin' time" and started sustaining all over the place
Everytime sam uploads, its just absolute dreams.
I have seen bamboo bars recently. But wooden wheels plus wooden bars would take the cake ☝️🤟👽🚲
Should’ve tried that with the wooden free bike
Some engineer made mtb frames almost entirely out of wood. They were incredibly good, maybe better than carbon, because wood has such excellent vibration damping, low weight, and durability when well designed and crafted. Company was called Renovo, unfortunately they went bust, because the level of craftsmanship required to pull this off is very expensive.
I've jammed wood into metal handlebars to damp vibration and the results were pretty astonishing.
I Love how you take it to the limit like every Vlog but with this one Love the Flip and the Flair especially with the All Natural, Bringing back the Medieval days Wooden Bars. Only you Sam Thanks Mate for doing it all for the fans ✌🏼Out
Ya man that was a scary one alright! You killed it as always though bud. I was hoping to see some fresh PilGrips on them, next time! ;)
I actually felt quite star struck seeing him in b&m tolgate
Oh my god no haha! Wood is pretty strong but man you love these risk!

Love the videos man! Keep up the amazing content!
'Cause of this gentleman I got my first mountain bike a few weeks ago
Keep it rolling mate!
The knowledge and ability that goes into....expanding the rules and common sense is really fun and inspiring. :)
That was a perfect backflip Sam!!! It was such a smooth landing!!. The wooded bars give you the rush of the not knowing if they will break or not!!!!
You absolutely crazy mate! Love your videos so much! 😁
you are really getting creative with your bike upgrades!
You know youre doing well when after 30 seconds you already have 5 likes 😅 can't wait to see the outcome loves ya Sam !
Edit: I'd love to see you try a bike park on them 🤣
Or you know people just like the video before even watching it like tools
Going for the 2M Subs fast, mate!🔥🚀 You deserve it!🤘🏼
Cheers from Germany!🤙🏼
Thanks dude!
Such good fun watching these
Leave it to Sam to try dumb things so we don’t have to 😂Keep up the entertainment buddy!
Wrap the bars with spare monny tins to make them aluminium again. If you use a pop rivet gun then they can have a steampunk vibe to their construction. Then, if the wood breaks, you will get shards of razor sharp monny tin instead of just a few splinters. Maybe take some tweezers with you for first aid.
The views on this 'episode' must all go to the end as everyone expects the bars to break and are watching for the inevitable crash of doom.
Max respect for doing things I would never do with no brakes. Wooden bars is mind blowing.
I think you can also use the tool adapted to the bike to do trail maintenance. It would be faster than walking. Just help the council out for lols.
I survived broken handlebars on a main road. It was my fault as I had drilled a hole in them and metal fatigue happens.
I continued my journey and made it back home again, feeling a bit silly.
The absolute maddest of the mad… another epic episode 👍
Love your videos Buddy. It inspires me a lot. ❤❤❤
Sam, im a fan of yours from the Philippines. I always enjoy watching your videos,i mean i enjoy watching everything you do. Please do some more videos of you ridin motocross inset in it. Thank you so much Sam. 🙂
that was totally epic, one of the best vids in a wile
such a legend! To the SKY!
Always banging video
Lol 😂 I really thought he would take it for a shred before cutting the ends of the ‘sacrificer’ off 😆
I’m going to need some track listings for these sick DnB excerpts you have been putting in your videos lately 💯🔥
You made history of bike. You are Epic sam
Sam you're insane, and I'm LOVING IT.
This is probably the bike part where wood is going to work the best. A good strong wood like hickory is going to be hard to snap, but the middle will probably wear out quickly because of the small rings. If you took a piece of metal pipe and cut it in half as a spacer it'd probably last forever.
Ye cos an inch of hickory is so strong u mong
@@leonardhpls6 Strong enough that we use it for hammer and axe handles that are used to hit things thousands of times without breaking.
Made a seat post out of the top of a shovel handle once and a friend of mine ran it for a few months but that was the old rail style seats... His stopped tightening so I joking said I'd make a wooden one because it would be lighter and he actually was stoked on the idea, wish I had more friends like that. 😂
You don't have a friend you fool don't lie
I think 🤔 it's cool I love the way Sam think keep it up Sam more videos please 🙏💕
Woodies. I see no negative except weight and death if they shatter. But probably just good and heavy.
Loved it! Straight up!
😁🤙
Have to be honest, this is your best craftsmanship to date ‼😂
Wooden frame....wooden wheels....wooden handlebars...🤔 dreams 😁 👍 keep it up love the videos Sam!
Love this guy man
so sick lol. Wood bars, and no breaks, jesus. I want to see massive ape hangers on a downhill bike smashing at a bike park.
Lets go🤙🏻
This video was well good, actually the dream.
I've seen metal bars snap a couple of times. Love flat bars. They are so real. Cheers man. X
Just great content as always!
SICK!!
That flip!
going to build a bar out of my old decks and try it on my fixed one. thx for the idea !!!
This man literally had more concern about wooden handlebars than strapping a helicopter to his back...
Your actually the best Sam.
Flair play Sam your always doing the stuff we all wondered would it work
Could be a new kind of slopestyle competition with extra points for sketchy modifications on the bikes. You prolly wouldn‘t even have to do tricks if you run tape tires and wooden bars 😆
😂
Hi,You have so Crazy Idea..... Amazing...🤟👽
Hahaha wooden bikeparts😂✌️ sooo good🤟
Could get dangerous! 😂
Honestly I trust that wood handle more than carbon bars
I once had to rush to an exam and had forgotten about my broken handelbar. So I found something with the right diameter at the time, a toilet plunger! 😂 I just unscrewed the plunger itself, installed the shaft and rode away. I was pretty carefull with the bar, managed to get to the exam on time. I broke it on the way back. For sure, it was not a great piece of wood, but I'm still suprised you managed to do so much with yours! Awesome!
Sad to see that spam below can also be a highlighted reply...
It doesn't make sense how well sam rides bikes with weird things as parts!! Sick video as always
Saludo de un seguidor desde Colombia 🇨🇴!!
Loving ur morning voice Sam at the start
Sustainable bars definitely growing industry.
I'm absolutely ready for that t-shirt mate
Came onto your channel waiting for the 6pm upload.....ended up years deep in your video collection! And now we're 9 mins late!! 🤣🤭
I was hoping to see some tricks with the "Sacrificer" still on the bars!
I laughed when I saw this screenshot. Of course! Of course Sam's doing wooden handlebars now.
Sam as a self proclaimed honorary subscriber of your channel. I request a new common feature be added. One of the utmost importance.. Since we know that to achieve the shreddy, one must be ready. A whip test must be done. Not only to test the tensile strength of said products but also because not going past 90 is a violation of shreddy rules, and a violation of shreddy rules is of major consequence .. So, with that in mind.. crack a monny and whip it good Sam. Whip it REAL good.
I know a guy who had a broom with a handle very similar that one you're using, he liked to look after his broom, he'd had it for 20 years, and in that time he'd had 17 new heads and 14 new handles !
Great wooden video
It's always nice when you go the extra mile and put life and limb on the line for my entertainment. What more could we ask for?
amazing video as always
Yo that was awesome Sam my dad is a carpenter and loves it😂
Love the fresh shirt!

Great vid man 🤘
Too gnarly. Leave well enough alone!
sam the killer !
You legend Sam I asked for this challenge
He’s risking his face for our entertainment. Such a great guy!!! 😂😂
such a legend 😂
from East to West Sam is the Best!
The wooden wheels and the handelbar that chuld be awsome 😂❤
You’re insane! But in a good, entertaining way….🤘🏼
Biiig up sam workin smooth
Yahoo you inspired me making a woodn Bar
With rise n shape🤙🤔😄
It may be that the stem is compressing the wood with each hit, creating a bit of play. Maybe try a single wrap of rubber from an old tube to cushion it? Should damp some vibration as well, but mostly it'll keep the hard stem from damaging the wood.
Wow.. now i dream to see Sam riding with bamboo bar 😁
Perfect for splinters
Just being awesome by commenting! TY for another fun video :D
Nice rake on those forks
Sam that was mad an so sketchy but u love it The more sketchy the better for u 👍👍
