That’s not true though. The misnomer is that recessions are only determined by two consecutive negative GDP growth quarters. The NBER has always been clear that GDP contraction is just one of several factors they use to call a recession. GDP itself is comprised of multiple inputs and can mask the actual, real economic picture simply via big changes in say, imports or government spending. GDP numbers also get revised months down the road because in an economy the size of the US, you aren’t going to get all the data right at the end of the month, which is why the NBER also looks at quarterly trends, and generally doesn’t even call a time period a “recession” until we’ll after it’s come and gone.
The Great Depression was originally called a “Panic”. The powers that be hated that term, so they coined “Depression” for economic downturns. They then decided they didn’t like Depression and coined the term Recession. History repeats itself now. Will be funny to see what term they come up with next. why is it that the recession we had in 2008-2009 felt more brutal than the one we're experiencing today? Finding work at the time was difficult and I even saw my neighbor get evicted for not making her mortgage payments. Today, I personally don't know anyone that doesn't have a job. I'm not well versed in economics but I'm starting to get the picture that just because there's low unemployement doesn't mean we're not in a recession....

That’s not true though. The misnomer is that recessions are only determined by two consecutive negative GDP growth quarters. The NBER has always been clear that GDP contraction is just one of several factors they use to call a recession. GDP itself is comprised of multiple inputs and can mask the actual, real economic picture simply via big changes in say, imports or government spending. GDP numbers also get revised months down the road because in an economy the size of the US, you aren’t going to get all the data right at the end of the month, which is why the NBER also looks at quarterly trends, and generally doesn’t even call a time period a “recession” until we’ll after it’s come and gone.
The Great Depression was originally called a “Panic”. The powers that be hated that term, so they coined “Depression” for economic downturns. They then decided they didn’t like Depression and coined the term Recession. History repeats itself now. Will be funny to see what term they come up with next. Research Ray Dalio’s economic cycle and also “The Fourth Turning” to see where we are.

why is it that the recession we had in 2008-2009 felt more brutal than the one we're experiencing today?
