Vintage Stove Exchange Westinghouse to Frigidaire

  • Changing stoves is a long Cavalcade of Food tradition that allows me to enjoy the variety of electric ranges in the collection. When I had the summer cottage, this task was quite an ordeal but we did it once a year and I was limited to only using 30-inch ranges due to space. Now, I can change stoves out fairly quickly and easily, and install any size range.
We took out the 1951 Westinghouse 40-inch range that I've been using since the kitchen studio opened. What a wonderful stove to use! This range is probably one of the heaviest in the collection, very well built and sturdy, and includes many nice features like a Miracle Oven, Color Glance controls, appliance outlets, and warming drawer.
Going in to the kitchen is a 1958 Frigidaire Deluxe 30-inch range. While this was not a top-of-the-line model, it does have a nice big oven, 2 eight-inch burners, an outlet and work light. Like many of the stoves, it was untested when I got it, so this was the first chance I had to plug it in and go over it. Other than the clock, everything else on the stove works fine. I'll keep this one in the studio kitchen for a few months and see how I like cooking and baking with it!

💐 My Dearest Kevin and Ralph, As much as I absolutely love all your vintage kitchen appliances, my heart longs for the cozy little cottage kitchen, and the homey foods, the music, the wonderful summer evenings, the bringing alive of a past only known in my childhood of many years ago!!! I'm begging you, PLEASE bring it back😊💕. Much love and admiration sent from my little place in the world! ❤️💐👍

Hi donmetz11 - thanks so much! I'm glad you enjoyed the episodes from the cottage! I no longer have the cottage. I sold it so that I could have a year-round home and a building to keep my collection of appliances, which is a much better arrangement for me. But I'm glad we had the chance to make some videos there in the years I had the cottage. I'm glad it reminded you of your childhood!

Hi Greg! Actually, the stove exchange was perhaps the biggest reason for me wanting a space where I could house the entire collection and easily (as I'm getting older) change the stoves out and share them and enjoy them. The cottage was a fun place and I really enjoyed it for the years I had it, but this arrangement is ideal for me. Unfortunately, I went from 800 sq. feet to 6200, so it's hard to cozy it up LOL!! Thanks so much - I appreciate hearing from you.

My '50s or '60s Hotpoint Custom Crest 40" double stove just blew up yesterday with 4 big explosive arcs and one more after I turned it off - so I quickly killed the electricity to it from the breaker box so no more shorting.) I was ready to throw it onto the frigid lawn (new Hotpoint graveyard,) until I watched some of your videos and I'm THINKING TWICE now. It's such a beauty with colored push-button control, timers, two electric front outlets, etc. etc.. It's a classic and I've always loved it's efficiency. Thanks for the display videos - what a terrific collection! Biggesst fan in Massachusetts now you've turned my head around.

I gotta admit that’s quite a collection you have ! Nothing beats those old school vintage ones! That stove you put in service was built in My home town! In fact My grandfather use to work for Frigidaire & was a tool & die maker ! Back when Frigidaire was a part of General Motors up until the late 70,s then sold to WCI .then in about the mid eighties AB Electrolux bought Frigidaire & along with the others that were under the WCI /White consolidated industries .

I am only 32 yrs old, and I absolutely love vintage appliances. I can just watch your videos from perhaps hundreds of miles away and can sense high quality and pride that was taken in the manufacture of these wonderful appliances. Reminds me of the telephone that came with the house of my grandmother's next door neighbor. I believe it's a model 302, not a whole lot is known about the age of the telephone, as the neighbor brought the home as an estate, but the phone is on the parlor and is hardwired into the phone line, no jack. The handset cord is straight fabric type. Still fully functional though rarely used. That thing was very heavy built, something has been truly lost when you can no longer slam the handset on the cradle to swiftly end an angry conversation.

Hi Bonnie! Thanks so much! These things are of interest to me, and my hope was always that there might be others out there who took interest, so it's my pleasure to share the collection. Yes, I still add to the collection, although I have to be very selective about what I add because I have to be careful not to run out of space!! But every once in a while I run across something very special that I don't already have, so I add it.

I have an old Frigidaire General Motors stove probably from the 1950’s.
Where can I research what year it was made?
It’s large size, like your stove you’re showing us.
The stove elements are spread apart, with an electrical plug.
There is a clock and timer, but I can’t figure that out, with nightlight.
Oven on the right, drawer on the left and a bottom drawer.
Any ideas how to find more information about my stove?

New subscriber here. Any future plans to film the cleaning/repairing process on these old ovens? I just bought a $30 1954 Frigidaire, and im at a loss as to where to begin. I’m afraid I’ll damage the “chrome” with chrome polish if it’s actually aluminum...or maybe take the finish off the porcelain with the wrong cleaner! Any tips?
Also, My oven still has the drop in deep well...do you know if they were typically made of steel or aluminum? I’m having trouble finding any information on it.

Hi Anolis! Welcome and thanks for subscribing and watching! I may do a future video on me cleaning one of the old ranges before I put it into service. The main thing is, for the exterior of the range, don't use anything that is abrasive in any way. For the ovens, I usually use an oven cleaner (like Easy Off) and there sometimes I need to scrub with a scouring pad, but that's just for the oven. Your Frigidaire sounds great - 1954 was a good year. The deep well cookers were made of aluminum, and Frigidaire sometimes used aluminum at the top of the range for the light hood. I normally use a good all purpose cleaner (like Simple Green) and sponges, toothbrushes, and lots of rags to clean the exterior. Good luck and enjoy your vintage range!

    • @cavalcadeoffood
      @cavalcadeoffood  Před 3 lety

Hi Ben! It's hard to say what your Zenith stove may be worth. There are a lot of variables such as cosmetic condition, working order, does it have all its original parts, will it need a lot of cleaning/reconditioning, etc. A good guide would be to go on your local craigslist and search for "vintage stove" and see what comes up and what things in your area are selling for. Hope this helps. I don't have a Zenith in my collection, but I collect from my general area (southeast Michigan) as stoves are very costly to ship. Thanks!

Hi Jeff! Yes, I no longer have the cottage but instead I have a year-round home and a building to house my entire collection, so this is a much better arrangement for me. The stove exchange is one of the reasons why I wanted a place where I could easily switch out the stoves and share my entire collection. I can't tell you how much work it was doing this at the cottage, as much as I enjoyed it there. Thanks so much!
