Then Cubans in Miami went to Cuba to pick up families but there were also criminals that the boats had to take. My friend had to leave his wife and daughter behind and take 2 prisoners on the boat. He made it here with his son and he would send his wife money when he first started making money. He finally got his family together after years. My family took off when Fidel was getting close.

The Afro Cubans have somewhat more love for Castro because he allowed them to be educated, and improved their health. But make no mistake about this. He was a dictator and they hated and feared him also.
My biological dad loved Cuba history and decided to name me based on the boat. My mom used to tell me of the Mariel boat and I imagined it as an amazing boat who saved many people leaving Cuba. But as I got older I kind of learned the real story, anyways cool interview very interesting
