Final update: this little reel is the little engine that could czcams.com/users/postUgkxSlytCJqozTF7EbdP4LWP-HUXf9WRDJ0e . It performed flawlessly and was easy to adjust drag in the moment while I was battling a 35lb bat ray behemoth. Mind you, this reel is spooled with only 25 lb braid and 25 mono topshot. It's paired with the kastking telescopic heavy power rod and the two work well together. This has now earned my respect and confidence when traveling and fishing. If you have ever hooked into large rays and sharks, you know they pull extremely hard and can run forever! This thing clamped down on the fish and was easy to adjust during the fight. It has a nice decently fast retrieve as well. Twice the fish went on mad runs and I was able to gain back line quickly to avoid spooling.

Be careful around boggy ground. Quicksand is a real thing and I've got caught in it twice. First time it was only 3 feet deep and my hiking companions were able to get me out, barely. Second time was over my head but luckily was covered by half a foot of water and I was walking my German shepard on a leash. Between me falling flat and floating waste up on the water wiggling to get free as the dog pulled on the leash from solid ground I barely made it out. Jump or step far enough out into the wrong boggy ground and you may never be seen again.

Just got back from just upstream from Point of Rocks & hammered several smallmouth, all more than 15" .......thousands of minnows, baby bass, and crawfish in the water.

A 15 inch lake peacock bass will pull a 15 inch river smallmouth all over the place in a tug of war battle. Peas fight right up to the boat. Bass throw in the towel after a few good runs
I use to fish around Maryland about 15 years ago and gave it up. Now, my son (21) is getting into fishing and has renewed my fire. I.m back looking for good spots to fish around Maryland. I don’t know where you are in this video but it gives me new hope that places are out there.

Love this fishing, and love wet wading the Upper and Lower sections of the Potomac as well (this looks like Lower Potomac/Point of Rocks maybe?). Just going to say, what's been said throughout the comments, please, please be super careful when doing this, it only takes one bad move to be in a real situation. This looks like some super difficult wading conditions (deep holes, slick rocks, muddy banks) Its always best to wet wade with a buddy who's crazy enough to wade those sections with ya. Also, come up a little more and fish below Dam #4 and Dam #5 sometime, much easier wading there (Dam 5 has really nice sections 1/2 mile downstream from the Dam).

😂🤣 in the first 5 seconds , I said - that looks like the Potomac.. sure enough lol. I used to live by that river, up past whites ferry but before you get to where wv,md,&va all meet.
And you're right buddy, that river is very dangerous. It's faster than it looks, it's deeper than it looks... AND it has undertow with caves in the bottom of the riverbed that the current will suck you into (never to be seen again usually)( sometimes they'll find the body)

In my opinion, you are not wrong about river smallies. Learned that myself by fishing for them on the Susquehanna for many years. I'd take a day of 8-10" fish on light tackle all day long.

You should fish the shenandoah river in and around Harper's ferry. I know some great spots. Bass walleye flatheads and occasionally a muskie. Hmu if you want.

Some day you will learn to fish the best lure in rivers and creeks, the Nikko Hellgrammite!
Using anything else is basically handicapping yourself.
There really is no need to use another lure for smallmouth in moving waters.
I disagree. The Nikko is smallmouth candy but it's still finesse fishing, which is great, but sometimes whipping out a 1/2 oz spinnerbait or glide bait gets you the whoppers your looking for.
Wild brook trout. Hardest fighting eapecially out of streams or rivers.

I waded 10 km in the creek tomorrow with my fishing buddy. We caught 96 creek smallies in total. What’s the biggest one you ever caught before? We measure the length not the weight cuz usually they are slimmer than the smallies in the lakes. (My pb is 19.5 inches)
