That’s not a pine that’s a fir . No offense but if you’re going to work in the tree service industry or logging industry you really should and need to learn how to identify tree species. Coming from the logging industry 4 generations of timber fallers to be exact that’s the first thing I was taught was what trees where what and there differences. Pine fir oaks maples. For instance ponderosa pine has long needles as does the western white pine however the white has somewhat shorter the sugar pine has shorter needles still but has the largest pine cones but can look similar to the lodge pole pine. Then there’s the firs Douglas fir has darker needles and smells much different than the white fir which has slightly lighter needles and younger trees has a Christmas tree like smell compared to old trees which have a sour almost a urin smell which is why loggers gave it a more colorful name the silver tip fir has needles that get a blueish to silver tint to them and a strong pleasant Christmas tree smell even on older trees. And there is the broad leaf maple it has the largest leaves and you cannot use its sap for syrup. Oaks now have a distinct grain structure as well as bark take the California black oak which has black bark white wood to slightly brownish wood with a darker heart wood and larger leaves than all other oak because it’s the largest of the oak species the white oak or known to others as the blue oak valley oak or water oak has white bark white sapwood and almost black heartwood with small leaves the live oaks have silver colored bark in younger wood and a darker almost black bark on older trees it’s wood is the same color from sapwood to heartwood it’s leaves vary depending upon species from spear shape to sawtooth with sharp sticker like edges and they don’t lose their leaves in the fall like other oaks . It takes time but you can learn what trees are what. We moved from California to Missouri and I’m learning the trees here all hardwood for the most part such as the silver maple with silver bark and slightly silver leaves field elm has small leaves and rough grayish bark fruitless white mulberry has bright yellow wood leaves with different shapes no fruit and it’s bark is thin when seasoned it’s wood turns an orange color and can be mistaken for hedge a wood that cannot be burned in a wood stove because it will melt it hedge has fruit but unlike mulberry hedge has thorns. Eastern red cedar is smaller and has white sapwood with very dark red heartwood it’s much different than the western red cedar which has white sapwood and pink heartwood and grows much larger on average of 6 feet across and 175-225 feet tall. Eastern white pine looks like the sugar pine but has very small pine cones shaped similar to the sugar pine but unlike sugar pine that has a sweet smell white pine has little smell. It pays to learn how to identify trees.
