@saigonbond Brenda Schultz McCarthy didn't have any real success as a player other than a few WTA tour titles but outside of Serena, I would say Brenda had the best female serve, she had the combination of pace and spin and could hit many aces. Many players can serve fast but with not much spin or placement. That's what makes Serena's serve stand out, the pace combined with spin and placement.

In reality, the reason Seles was not in her prime was because she got out of shape and didn't improve her game during that lengthy and medically unnecessary break she took. The game passed her by while she was having a love affair with butter (she talks about his in her book). Good effort to return to the tour, but without the fitness levels the game required, she was not a threat to the top and up-and-comers, like Serena. And her results showed just that.

I was at this match back in 1999...my firm usually gave out tickets to US Open matches (including the finals), Yankees games, Mets games, NY Knicks games, and the NY Giants games. This is one of the matches where I cheered for both Monica Seles and Serena Williams. Monica was on pace to becoming the GOAT of Tennis after winning 8 Grand Slam tournaments while she was still only a teenager (winning her first Grand Slam at the age of 16 against Steffi Graf in 1990). But after she was assaulted and stabbed in the back by a crazed fan during a tournament at the age of 19, ranked #1, she was forced to take 2 years off to recover physically and mentally since her attack also led to her suffering from PTSD. She was just never the same after her return from that horrific attack, winning just 1 additional Grand Slam for a total of 9 --- this was a young girl who was unstoppable before being attacked on the court. It's almost like she played with a broken heart when she returned to the game. And it also didn't help that she was also 'stabbed in the back' figuratively by her women's tennis peers who all voted that not only should her number 1 ranking be taken away after the horrific attack...but also that she should not even be within the Top 10.
This is why, even with a young career cut short with 9 Grand Slam titles (and whereby she could have racked up 20+ Grand Slam titles if she were never assaulted by a crazed knife-wielding attacker on the tennis court), I would rank Monica right up there as the GOAT alongside Serena Williams, with Steffi Graf ranked 2nd or 3rd best of all time. Of course, Venus is up there as well, along with Martina Navratilova, and Chris Evert.

The psychological effect of the stabbing affected Monica far more than the
physical part of it, which she recovered from. Also in that period, her dad
died after a long battle with cancer. Monica was never the same after this,
and it's too bad, as she may have won more majors than any other player. I
loved to watch Seles play, as she brought incredible desire, grit and will to
win, the likes of which I've never seen before. Too bad this incident happened.
Monica Seles was my all time favourite player in the women's game.
In this match vs Serena, Monica was overweight, and was lacking that firey
intensity she used to have. Really Monica was just a shell of her former self
in this match. In the past her penetrating ground strokes rarely missed and
usually right inside the line, with deadly precision. By this time her will was

Monica was stabbed in 1993 and Serena didn't arrive until she won a GS until 1999. Monica Seles won 7 out of 8 grand slams before the stabbing. After that, Monica didn't win a grand slam for 5 years then never won another one. Hope that clears it up for you. I'll leave you with this... Serena and Venus looked up to Seles and wanted to play like her.

Overall it's a good comment, though I wouldn't describe Monica as overweight exactly. I don't think her size is the issue as much as maybe her fitness. Pure famous Monica Seles technical brilliance of old that here, in a tired 25-year veteran, reappears in flashes throughout this match. But also is bursting on the scene, and worth admiring as a welcome novelty, is the exuberant vitality of 17-year old Serena Williams, with and immense font of energy to spare. If things had proceeded normally in tennis life, the 8-year difference of ages between Monica and Serena would have guaranteed many many more confrontations of those two over the years. Those are the exciting superlative matches that we, fans and spectators, have irremediably lost after the dramatic turn of events that engulfed Monica Seles at 19.

That she continued to compete while going through this extraordinary change of body structure - think of what that meant for her legs, heart and lungs - is a tribute to her courage and determination. That she still, as an obese player, maintained a position among the top ten is also a proof that her technical brilliance had not totally vanished. But her physical strength, vitality, and most important of all, her endurance, resistance to fatigue, were never again the same as before her overlong withdrawal. She never was again the same player as before her stabbing. Both players had the same name, but no longer the same body. Only the technique of high-precision shots, controlled by the brain, retained some of its extraordinary efficiency, but not consistently, only in flashes, enough to extract wows from the whole stadium.

Thinking that she would have steamrolled all the players that came up is not realistic. Other players became fitter and stronger. Monica was away from the game for 2 years and won and made Grand Slam finals upon her return. Justine Henin retired and returned and made the final of a Grand Slam, Lindsay Davenport had a baby and returned to Tennis. Ashleigh Barty left and returned to Tennis. Unfortunately Monica was stabbed but returned to Tennis. So it happens quite frequently.

I think someone like Monica, and even Steffi, knew from this moment on about the changing of the guards. That's why they did not stay long enough to get beaten time and time again by one of the sisters. I think someone like Zina Garrison-Jackson and Chanda Rubin could've done very well for themselves but they played the "how as it should be" type of game. But by the time the sisters came on board and showed what power game is like it was too late. Steffi has somewhat of a power game if you call it that. She beat the sisters, of course, but early on their career. Imagine Steffi going up against a Serena like the Serena in 2012 during the Olympics? Thank you. That's why Steffi and the rest did not stay long enough to experience what someone like Maria Sharapova is experiencing against Serena. Those that try to make a comeback like Henin really did not amount to anything other than being suspected of using performance enhancing drugs so they retired a second time. Hingis was the same.

Capriati and Davenport were right when they said about a hypothetical Steffi in the early 00s:
"If she would have been playing now, not retired quite yet, this would be her time." (Capriati, 2002)
“She was the greatest champion I ever played against. …. What if she had kept playing? She would have won a lot more slams titles in my opinion.“ (Davenport, 2020)

Under her loose-fitting shirt, you can distinctly see that Seles is carrying a roll of fat around her waist. It's not just her stomach pushing through, but a real roll going around the waistline. So forget about chasing wide balls or rushing to the net to catch a drop shot. With all this extra weight slowing her down, she gets tired more easily, and in the 3d set she's reached the limit of her reserve of strength, and practically has not enough left to compete at the same level as in the first set. And those three sets went pretty fast, 1 h 50'. Seles does not like to waste too much time on lengthy rallies. She wants the point over very quickly, in one or two hard shots preferably. Her signature ground shots, solid, heavy, and often superbly angled, remain her main weapons and keep her a redoubtable opponent to any top player. Her serve action is good enough for the occasional ace. However, her famous strokes take a lot of energy out of her, and it shows, as she now makes more unforced errors than when she was No. 1.
All in all, she deserves credit for her determination to continue in competitive tennis at the top level when her mobility, stamina, endurance and fitness are no longer what they used to be. She's already an old trooper, even though she still is only 25. She's now content with reaching quarter-finals and semi-finals (with an occasional appearance in a final, such as the 1998 French Open), and remaining a fixture in the top-10 rankings. Monica Seles won our passionate love ten years earlier as a teenager, and here, as a young veteran, she still commands our affection and admiration, only slightly tinged with regret. It was wonderful to see her youthful smile fleetingly reappear when, at 1:05:37, she retrieved a very wide ball on her forehand side with a magnificent one-handed shot down the line, with the whole stadium erupting into frantic applause. Memory flashes of the incomparable Monica Seles that once was.

I remember when thexsister came on the scene andxstartedcwinning WTA changed the rules so that a player had to be in at least certain number of tournaments to be ranked. Serena won grand slalms and a few others and was still not number one

      Utter crap.
Players always had to play a certain number of tournaments to be ranked.
Serena became #1 on July 8, 2002. She had won the FO in June (her 2nd slam after USO 1999) and Wimbledon in the first week of July, overtaking her sister (winner of Wimbledon and USO 2001) and Capriati (winner of AO 2002).
So no racist conspiracies by mean whiteys.

Probably the Two Greatest Female Tennis Players Ever, if Seles didn’t get stabbed. I list them as:
    1. Serena Williams
    2. Martina Navratilova
    3. Steffi Graf
    4. Margaret Court
    5. Chris Evert
    6. Helen Wills
    7. Monica Seles
    8. Suzanne Lenglen
    9. Billie Jean King
    10. Maureen Connolly
    11. Venus Williams

She always was overweight and later became outright fat.
That she could win so much anyway is a testament to her talent - and the terrible competition in the 2010s.
