Master!
I"m a luthier that occasionally works on fiddles. I have a good friend who makes them, and when it came time for me to rehair my first bow, I asked him how hard it was. He said "Good f___ing luck!" Actually, like most things in the string instrument world, it's not hard to do. But it is super hard to do perfectly. I have done perhaps 8 and never have I achieved anything like Daniel's level of perffection. I always have loose hairs. Fortunately, these have been done for fiddlers that aren't as particular as a concert violinist. I come back to this video over and over, and lhe makes it looks so easy, but I tell myself that he's probably done a thousand. Thanks again, Daniel!
Wow Daniel, you make make changing bow hair alomst simple! I have two girls and they are both learning to play bowed instruents, one is learning the violin and the other is learning the viola. Their instruments were purchased from a 2nd hand store so I'm laerning restoration and repair. It has become a new hobby of mine. So I wanted to thank you for your informative and inspirational video. Thanks.
John Smith
It is so nice to see a true artist at work thank you Daniel that was wonderful and very educational
He made that look easy.
I came to this video to learn how hard it is to change the hair on a cello bow. I know this is just about changing the hair on a bow, but in watching this video, I came to realize that everything I do in life, I have been doing wrong. I want to move in with you, and thus, learn to live, vicariously, through you.
great video! the best i found on this topic! it's been very useful to me.
i'm a saw player and yesterdey just before a gig the hair broke away from the head of my bow. Thanks to your video today i could fix it all by myself without spending any money.
thank you Mr Olsen
Thank you, Daniel. Appreciate that you took the time to make this video and share your skill and knowledge.
Pity what happened to his violins by his wife in 2017.
@@TheAnonyy I read it happened in 2014 but their divorce was finalised, I hope she had one hell of an excuse because that behaviour is disgusting, abhorrent and immature
One of the best instructional videos I have seen. I am remote and to get a bow haired - not often.. It would be nice to be able to be able to tackle this job. I take care of my "fiddle" as far as maintenance. I am no expert, . I m not a business, just taking care of my own needs to be clear.. Today, I noticed one of my mainstay bows had loosened. I immediately cut the hair and will get it to my bow guy for a re hair.. HAD I seen this video.. I would have tightened the plug until I got to my bow guy.. I may tackle an old bow for fun now.. But one of the first things I must do is lose some weight.. Great tip.. :) Loved it!
“Next you get money, get paid” lol
Thank you so much! I enjoyed this video. I like the way you talk and explain.
I've always paid people to do this, but this looks so peaceful. I'm mechanically inclined as well. i'm doing it myself from now on. Great video!!!
I'm so happy to find a good, informative video on this subject with such precise instruction. Your work is wonderful, I wish I could send my bows to you! 😁 Will definitely check out the book!
Thank for all so kind advices you gave to us. Wish you the best. Regards from Greece! Stavros
I really enjoyed this! Recently had two bows re-haired, this helped to understand how everything works with the bow hair etc. Thank you
Thank You You are a very soft spoken gentleman and a thorough profrssional.God Bless!!
that was for once a clear presentation! thank you.
I reccomend watching Daniel and doing it yourself. I brought my grandfather's 200 year old French bow into a luthier in Portland.. He used my frog but switched sticks on me. I had taken pictures of the markings so it was easy to notice. He lied and there was nothing I could do about it. Don't trust with an expensive bow. If you watch this and do exactly what he does its easy.
The best video yet for this! Thank you!
Thank you Daniel Olsen!!
In 2015 I will change my first hair bow thanks to you.
Best regards from Brazil!
I keep coming back to this tutorial, because it is so excellent! I just wish I knew what the last advice was to be, before the battery died... :-(
Thank you Daniel, I followed your instructions and just now finish bow hair on my bow. Hardest part was making bow hair wedges and second hardest was combing hair straight and keeping it straight to install. Bow is drying as I type. Thanks!
thank you sooo much!!!! best video on changing bow hair
I had followed the guide perfectly until 13:18, this step was so difficult for me and the tip would slip out of the hole and I could not plug it in as easily with the wood piece as you did.. I eventually ended up cutting too much bow hair off attempting to get the tip to fit, long story short my attempt was a total failure. Thank you for the guide, I will be attempting this again sometime in the future.
thank you so much, you just have saved my violin, my violin bow too old for use and I think myself will repair it!
THx mr Olsen, i just finish to rehair my cello bow and i m very happy cause now i m going to save money because of ur nice advice ... all the best and Tell us ur message to the world we all wants to know!
You are such a joy to watch. Thank you for sharing this. Now one can appreciate all the work done to replace the bow hair. A Big thank you from the Island of Malta
Thank you very much, Daniel, for this clear and well shot video. It is comprehensive guide how to do rehairing process. If I had tried to do it without this knowledge, it would have gone really weird and I had ruin my bow.
Thank you Daniel.very interesting! i dont play, i just bought a violin from a sale, from my grandson, maybe he will learn to play! he did do cello, and he plays base guitar
Bass guitar
great video, change the bow hair is the hardest thing for me, but you make it look easy, you are great, thanks for sharing your knowledge

Thanks Daniel for sharing such amazing skill with us
your accent makes the videos even better
Daniel, thanks for generously sharing your knowledge. Very much appreciated.
It looks easier than making your own oboe reeds.
Thanks for the informative video.
Very helpful, thank you Master.
As always, very informative and nice to hear the instruction. I have a Jin Wu violin, very very nice Violin and am looking into bow making and rehairing them. My oldest is from late 1890's from Germany made by Louis. elegant bow, but needs rehaired. i have two other bows i will pratice on first.
Thanks for a great video, Daniel. I have a couple of old bows that need new hair, so I'm going to try to do it myself. But I think I'm going to wash and comb the hair before installing it--just tie one end first. Anyway, thanks a lot.
Nice information san. Very well explained.
Very nice video.
thank you. Now I can appreciate the true value of this work.
A nice, clear and complete explanation of rehairing. Thanks a lot for this!
Great video! Thank you and greetings from Finland!
That ending lol, great video.
Thank you so much. I have to try rehairing my bow I have wanted to try for years. Love your video. I will put hair in compost or leave in bird feeder after a wash for nesting birds.😀
Amazing to watch this.
You are so skilled - a pleasure to watch!!!
Thank you so much Mr. Daniel for your great tutorial.
Very good and useful video. Thanks for sharing it.
You are AMAZING!
Thank you for an amazing video. I would never have hoped to see such a masterful bow hair change ever. I'm sort of sad that I can't find real information about string instruments anywhere on the net. I've played the cello for decades but struggled to change the nut (what ever it's called) where the pin (again unknown term!) is screwed and had to take apart a bad carbon bow to learn the parts
Great! but I m dying to know what he was about to say when the batery ran off! please tell us!
Yes, please tell us!
Tell us please!
XD
It was the secret to life.
@@wormhole331 I figured! : )

Thank You mr Olsen! It was a pleasure to see your video. Very soon I'll try to do it myself, but not with my bow, but my pupils'. ;))

Great Instruction Video! THANK YOU!!
thanks a lot. I got my first bow with hair all busted. took me 30 minutes to finish. but now i's perfect:)
Great video! Thanks for sharing knowledge.
Thank you so much!
I was sure it was wrong, when I saw a violinmaker using UHU glue to glue the hair in the frog & the tip.
I learned many things from you .I love you .(from iran .)
I love Iran too and will visit your country someday. thanks
So long story short: don't try this at home.
why I did it it worked bow is better than before
do !! try this at home .. use an old bow that is not your main one.
doing this takes some experimenting and time .
No pain no gain, I will try this.
Very nice sir & thanks❤
Thanks for sharing your insight it was kind of you.
Very interesting! Thanks for taking the time and sharing.
Cheers Danial, thanks for a informative piece of information, my best wishes from Australia
Thanks so much, very nice to violin students.
Tanks for sharing
Very interesting video Daniel.
If I had it all to do over again I'd be a luthier. Noble profession.
Thanks for sharing. Very useful
you are welcome, hope someday I can teach you hand by hand.
Thank you very much for an informative video.
Thank you. The video is vey helpful.
Hi! Thanks for sharing New Fan!! ☺️☺️
Thank you so much!
I actually want to replace the bow string on my erhu.
I would think most of the information will be applicable, particularly how the string should be parallel to each other and don't cross. I will wash the hair and comb it first.
Am I on the right track?
the camera man ruined a perfect ending, just about to hear your last speech. such him. 😂
tks for sharing the knowledge, master. 🙏
GRACIAS
My bow hair has stretched, thanks for your video, I will try to repair it :)
Very interesting - Thank you!
Me salvaste la vida te amo
ounque nadie me entienda
Hello, just to say that I enjoyed this video, a job well done!
Thank you for sharing your expertise and your passion. You are truly a master craftsman as well as a master musician I'm sure. What type of hair is used and where does it come from? Thank you.
Thanks for this Daniel. One question-- I don't quite understand your very last step with the stick holding the split hair at the opposite side (17:55) --is this to stretch the hair?
Thank you so much!!
Daniel thank you so much for sharing your skills I play bluegrass fiddle and your violin videos have helped me have better sounding violins,( so my question is when you finish the wedge you made to hold hair in the bow what size gouge tool do you use to put the u shape under the wedge), thank you so much for sharing your talent
