It is indeed a marvelous thing that this piece of tree can be sliced into thicknesses to be used for so many beautiful and useful things. These horizontal bandsaws are great inventions. The Vietnamese people are not only highly creative, they are ingenious as well.

Kauri trees dug out of a swamp in New Zealand have been Carbon dated to 45,000 years old. I have a lovely wooden bowl made out of that wood. It looks brand new and is my little treasure from my homeland.

That's right! With wood like this, it proves that the tree is tens of thousands of years old. The wood is as hard as carbon fibers. We had to use a special saw blade to cut it

How fast are these trees being cut down? Are most of them going to be gone in 30 to 50 years and are their replanting and forestry management practices in place to protect these trees from extinction?

The Lilac genus or more correctly the Clove genus (scientific name: Syringa) is a genus of about 25-40 species of flowering plants in the Olive family (Oleaceae), native to Europe and Asia ( This website[broken link] lists 108 scientific nomenclatures, but there are probably many synonyms). However, in Vietnam, most people only know about the purple-flowered lilac (lilac), so the name lilac is more popular. Another reason could be that the species Syzygium aromaticum is a different genus and the same family called clove is very famous as a spice and medicinal plant. Tree species in this genus range from large shrubs to small trees, 2-10 m tall. The leaves are opposite (sometimes in a whorl of three leaves), deciduous and in most species are simple heart-shaped leaves, but in some species they are pinnate (e.g. S. laciniata, S. pinnatifolia). Flowers bloom in spring, each flower is about 1 cm in diameter, the color ranges from white, light pink or generally purple, with 4 petals. The flowers grow in large panicles, and in some species are quite strongly fragrant. In temperate regions, flowering begins about 80-110 days after the average temperature is 10oC.

In Vietnam, I will give you small wooden items made from wood fibers like this. I mean to give as souvenirs, not to sell, and even if you have the money to buy them, you won't be able to transport these large wooden panels to the state where you live.
