  • In 1519, an extraordinary military event took place in Meso-America. Against all odds, Spanish conquistador Hernán Cortés led a tiny mercenary expedition that would cause the downfall of the great Aztec Empire and bring large portions of mainland Mexico under Spanish rule.
    With the help of native allies that had been terrorized by their Aztec neighbour, Cortés managed to conquer the Aztecs, with only 600 Spanish soldiers, 15 horsemen and a number of cannons.
    Upon arrival, he ordered to sink his own ships, to make a statement to his men that there was no way back.
    When the conquistadors entered the great valley of central Mexico in November and for the first time saw the magnificent city of Tenochtitlan, they could hardly believe their eyes.
    In front of them lay an island, seemingly fastened to the mainland with bridges and was four times larger than Seville, the last city they had seen before they went out to sea. Both the houses and the streets shined with a white light.
    Hernán Cortés was believed to be Quetzalcoatl, a legendary god who controlled the lightning and was expected to return that same year, according to myth and the Aztec calendar.
    Cortés and his men took advantage of this coincidence and captured the emperor Moctezuma, who ultimately ended up dying by the hands of his own people. Some 2 years later, the Aztec culture was more or less destroyed.
    The story and events repeated itself in 1532, when a relative to Cortés, by the name of Francisco Pizarro, conquered the Incas with a mere 106 soldiers and 62 horsemen.
    Why were the Spaniards so successful?
    The answer is: ''Guns, germs and steel''. They had the advantage of steel armor and weaponry, early firearms known as arquebuses and cannons, powerful crossbows and of course the horse, an animal which was not indigenous to the Americas. They also brought war dogs with them. Though in the end, the biggest factor was the diseases they had unknowingly taken with them aboard their ships from Europe. Native Americans had no defence against such an enemy.

      According to European accounts it was Aztec enemies who were responsible for the massacres and then a lack of immunity to Old World disease wiped out a large portion of the native population, including allies.

    Hi! you comment that the Spanish were successful because of their armor, their swords and firearms. Regarding the latter, remember to give an example that in the battle of Otumba 600 Spaniards fought, 3,000 allied Indians against 100,000 Aztecs. He thinks that arquebuses are avant-load weapons and despite being terrifying in the eyes of the Aztecs they recharged very slowly. Cortes' ingenuity was that in a desperate attack he decided to kill the Aztec military general, which he did. this fact in those latitudes at that time that meant the end of the battle. The Aztec Indians fled in terror when they saw their leader fall. Another very important fact was that certain epidemic diseases unknown until then in the American continent such as smallpox, measles, typhoid fever, typhus and influenza, decimated the population and opened the door to the conquest of all Mesoamerica. And to top it off, do not forget the help, as you well said, from other Indian tribes that lived under the yoke of the Aztec tribe.

      This is ‘techonology’ from the 1500s, not the 21st century. Gun powder an innovation imported from Asia was fairly primitive, it was unreliable (often failing to work properly or at all) and slow (took a long time fire just one shot, leaving a shooter vulnerable to being killed) due to hot humid weather and the range it could hit a target accurately was rather limited. The thick jungle also made carrying cannons around impractical and burdensome.
      Armour was heavy and cumbersome and it slowed down and tired out those wore it in hot and humid conditions so many Europeans didn’t and some opted for lighter indigenous armor instead.
      Horses and military tactics would have initially taken the indigenous populations by surprise but would have eventually adjusted and not remained an advantage for long.
      Steel was an advantage but off set by being heavily outnumbered so relying on allies was critical to not be overwhelmed.

      @@jamesburke1039 Steel was an advantage yeah, but obsidian was a much more lethal material with the trade off of often breaking after a few hits. Spain wasn’t as overpowered as people think, individual bravery, sicknesses, and competent commanders were what made Spain win.

      Sobre ls tàctica de descabezar a la serpiente no fue empleada por la "ingenuedad" de Cortés.
      Cortés era buen observador y como tal sabía que la pobre tàctica mexica se derrumbaba en el momento en que su lider cae derrotado.
      Ni siquiera tenían una cadena de mandos para poner orden si esi ocurría.
      Cortés demostró en Otumba ser un gran estratega.

      The armies that defeated the Aztecs were mostly local indigenous enemies, not Europeans. The lack of immunity to Old World diseases wiped out a large portion of the indigenous population, including allies, rather than warfare.
      It was these circumstances that allowed Westernized mestizos, who had better immunity and outnumbered people of European ancestry early in the colonial period, to gain the ascendancy and prosper at the expense of the indigenous population and gradually assimilated, voluntarily or by force, the native population spread across the region.
      This was a long process as after the fall of the Aztecs many indigenous populations were not under European rule and remained autonomous for centuries. Which resulted in Spanish being spread by mestizos and becoming interwoven into the cultural fabric in the Americas in a similar manner to other languages.
      Although the ‘empire’ originated from Europe, the people in the Americas that sustained and inhabited these colonies were mostly of indigenous and mixed ancestry.
      Unlike what happened with English colonies that remained primarily European in ancestry and gradually repelled back other indigenous populations in their expansion to the West, with help from occasional convenient temporary native alliances.
