As a Florida State fan, it would take me awhile to get used to roof on the stadium. Don't get me wrong, it would help the fans in the early season games, but I think it was take awhile for a lot of fans to get used to the roof. With that said, I'm sure shade would be appreciated.
They've needed this renovation for decades. Every time I went to the afternoon or noon games as a student I had to use sunscreen or get burned to a crisp. Now that fan attendance is falling across all sports (TV is so much easier and cheaper), they need to add a lot more comfort and reasons to go besides just seeing the teams. I'm more for a complete ceiling like a dome or a retractable roof.

Having worked in the ticket office in Tallahassee I can tell you that each of the last 10 years have been a struggle to sell out Doak for the season. Removed from '13 it's always been a BIG ask to get 80k in Doak. Even in '12 (a pretty dang good team) I think you're being disingenuous if you are saying you didn't see empty seats for the lesser matchups.

I always hoped that one day FSU would make the top of the entire top of the stadium look like the section of the Champion's club, with spears and all. Whatever they do, I hope it has traditional Seminole characteristics and not like a kids bounce house that you see in a birthday party.

For early season games, the sun is brutal, especially in the East stands. What I would prefer would be, like the old days, to play all home games at night. But in a world where TV dictates everything, I guess we can't do that any more.

The trend is towards smaller stadiums as many are priced out of games. The hotel cost with a 2 night minimum make it too expensive for many families. A weekend for a family ends up being well over a grand to see a football game if you are traveling. They don't sell out most of the time so adding seats doesn't make sense.
