  • Goth lore goes hard friend bats. There's a lot to be learned about the factors that formed the subculture and music that we now call goth, and not all of it was straight from Leeds, the Batcave, or the UK. We're taking you on a short trip through our libraries to show you some of the most useful books we've read. This isn't us reading Wikipedia and we're going beyond the surface level to bring you information you won't find anywhere else
    Heads up, all of the book links are amazon affiliate links, so if you use them, you take money out of Bezos' scrooge mcduck pool and give it to us instead.
    Or hey, if you want to support us even more, check out our patreon or send us a tip on paypal! We are 100% community supported and every dollar we recieve goes back into OU. We're currently saving for equipment to improve our video quality, too!

    Maybe this is my LA bias showing, but I'm surprised that Mikey Bean's Phantoms didn't make the list! Anyway, I need to pull the plug and get that Young Limbs colllection.

      That’s cause we have a whole series coming up that uses Phantoms as a primary reference. Scarecrow does mention it in this vid! But don’t worry, it’s gonna get its due

    Thanks for this overview and also the sympathetic and positive review of the - now almost 10 years old - book that Andi and I made. In did a lot of research between 2008 and 2014 on my favorite music and especially collecting photos of goths of the 80s. I collected the photos on the Nowthisisgothic Tumblr. Andi followed that Tumblr and approached me in 2012. We shared some ideas and ambitions and then decided to work together for a publication. After the publication, I graduated my History studies and in recent years, more books approaching goth and postpunk from a historical perspective have been added, which, given my background, I can only welcome! (don't worry about my last name; no-one outside of the Netherlands ever gets it and I don't mind :--))
    Keep on reading X

      Thank you so much for sharing the story of the book! I appreciate the work you put into it; it’s in my opinion one of the best primer books on the subculture. I’ve lost track of how many copies I’ve bought and gifted out to people

    What about The Art Of Darkness:The History Of Goth by John Robb. I haven't picked it up yet but enjoyed the interview Ken over at Sounds & Shadows with John on the book.

    • @ObscuraUndead
      @ObscuraUndead  Před 7 měsíci +1

      Azy here, I read it and it wasn’t really my favorite. It doesn’t really cover new ground or offer new insights, and John didn’t include references or citations. So my academic stickler self kinda ranks that book low as a resource

      @@ObscuraUndead Thanks Azy for the reply and information on the book. I may hold of purchasing it now but definitely will be getting Lol Tolhurst.

    Thank you both so much for the video. Out of the 10 books from this review I didn't read 4 of them 2 from each side of your sections. When it comes to the subculture I liked magazines & watching documentaries only because it was more widely available at the time. However I've always liked reading gothic novels & the poetry classic.

    • @ObscuraUndead
      @ObscuraUndead  Před 7 měsíci +1

      I absolutely love gothic novels and it’s awesome that gothic literature has been having a revival too. But documentaries, any recommendations?

      @@ObscuraUndead I've been reading a of Darcy Coates lately I just started my 5th book. It's been a while for the documentaries I think there were a couple on BBC a long time ago in the early 2000 only reason why I remember that is because I was overseas when I watch them. It was all about the 90's I think I'm sure it's on CZcams somewhere.

    Young Limbs had an exhibition in a shop that had been turned in to an art gallery (single room facing on to the street), featuring the originals of some of the pictures you'd have seen in the book.

    • @sheridan-wildewood
      @sheridan-wildewood Před 2 měsíci

      Think it was a pop-up shop/gallery rather than a permanent location (but could be wrong). The exhibition was at the Museum of Youth Culture shop at 95 Berwick Street in Soho. Incidentally the Leather and Lace book was launched elsewhere in London, at the The Loading Bar, Stoke Newington (also a gaming pub and early home to Oxventure).
