I just assumed the joke was that she wrote them to fictional women, and then signed with a name that could be female. And that everyone missed it because she didn't say the letters were to women.

It's true! This interview made me giggle and cringe at the same time because when I was in high school, I totally use to write fake letters to fake people just to practice getting into a different type of person's head for a while. Now I write novels lol. It's funny cause my English, Creative Writing and Drama teachers often had us do epistolary style fiction writing to help understand a character's perspective. It's rather awful that Ellen's being razzed for doing something that teaching curriculum has established for students to use in their education.
